I definately prefer it without the negative bonus. I've been quite firm on the issue for some time now, but in the end that's just my opinion. :wink:

It looks as though you've toned down the brightness of yellow, but now the lighter parts of pink are really standing out and my eyes keep getting drawn to it. If there was to be a single part of the map brighter than anywhere else I think it should be in the middle. So perhaps tone down the brighter parts of pink if you can and consider brightening up Mind and Reason if that's a look you want to go for.

In the passing away territory there appears to be a smudge of blue on the lower side of the army shadow.

Overall, an absolutely beautiful map. Good work guys.

-1 for mind just brought this map back to life for me! It's not what I was hoping for, but it will make abusing the middle territory more difficult. Team games might have problems with this, but it is definitely playable now. Thank you very much!

How should the symbol territories be named?
As they are now.

I voted for this, but I like them both so it doesn't matter.

I think the reason why everyone started the whole -1 thing is because Mind could attack all the Thoughts. Making Reason the one that can attack Reason doesn't really change things...


And WM, the current text for -1 is rather misleading. It currently says '-1 Mind with any Thought', but shouldn't it be '-1 Mind per Thought Held'? It currently sounds like no matter how many Thoughts you hold along with Mind, you have a total of -1 from your total bonus. Whereas it should be a -1 from the bonus of each Thought held along with Mind. Well at least that's how I interpreted Nikolai's suggestion... If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Good point. I will adjust the text to your suggstion. I think the other does still do the same thing, but your text is more easily understood.

Here is the update with the darker pink areas and the center is a little brighter. The bonus text has been revised to explain the -1 for each thought held plus Mind.

When I code the -1 should I just call it MindWithThought, or something else?

Remember, there can't be spaces in the names.

I think it might be better fore the xml, if it reads the thought you hold, but I'm not sure.

It does, the only part it doesn't is for the negative Mind + Thought part because if you have a bunch I don't want to see:

-1 for holding Mind + Death
-1 for holding Mind + Law
-1 for holding Mind + Compassion

I want to see

-3 for holding Mind + Thought.

The 8 Thoughts on their own should have their own name.

I'm still not sure that wording for the -1 bonus is clear enough. I know size is an issue, but I don't feel the current wording implies the negative bonus is for each thought.

Hm, I think once we can get the wording down, this map will be looking pretty stellar. Once we've got it hashed out, lets see the latest small and large versions of the map, along with 2 more copies with the XML centered.

Why not something like "Mind gives -1 army per Thought held"?

I know that in general, people prefer the legend in a standard format of [amount] [name] (or the reverse). However, this map already has explanatory text for Allied symbols, so maybe the focus should be on conciseness and clarity instead of sticking to a sentence structure.

The "Mind" and "-1" could be highlighted to make it stand out in the sentence. On a related note, maybe the "+2" in the text for Allied symbols could be highlighted too? People generally associate numbers on Risk maps with bonuses, so I think highlighting the +2 would attract more attention to that mechanic. Also, if the "+2" is highlighted, it could be in Green to match "Allied", which would allow "-1" to be in Red to visually contrast the positive and negative bonuses.

Yea I agree, it still isn't vey clear. 'for each' seems rather long, so why not "-1 Mind per Thought Held"?

That's true, the visual contrast caused by the colours would cause the Bonuses to stand out more. Perhaps the "+3" in "+3 Bonus per Thought" could be made green too? Although that might look at bit out of place...The -1 being red and +2 being green sounds like a good suggestion to me though.

I apologise I may have complicated my explanation...

Basically if you name two continents the same i.e. "Mind and Thought" and you hold 2 of them then you will get...

"-2 for holding Mind and Thought"

...in the game log.

Much like how Widowmakers has done the "Kings", the Radiation in "USApocalypse" and "opposing triangles" in "Chinese Checkers" ... and if it ever gets released - how I did "Conquer 4".

Right we are having a misunderstanding. In my xml I am doing that on purpose to make some things group together. I was clarifying that to the other person in the first post you quoted because they wanted to know why I didn't have different names for everything. I then assured them I have different names for the actual thought regions by themselves.

So esentially I have.

Law
Compassion
War
Knowledge
Inspiration
Wealth
Harmony
Mind + Thought(s)
(8 of)
Allied Symbols (8 of)

As the different 'continents'.
