Just to remind everyone, it would have been more surprising if membership had not declined. People just aren't as interested in Risk as they used to be.

Another consideration: what can you do individually do to promote the game and encourage others to play Risk on CC? At the RISK of appearing too self-promoting, here is what I do:

1) I serve as a CC Guide to new players and I do help a few learn the site and the game better. The Guide Program is intended to help grow the site and keep those who want to play Risk Online.

However, most stay on CC for 1-3 minutes and do NOT return. As I stated elsewhere in this same thread, Risk and CC is NOT for everyone. Risk does not have mass appeal, such as Angry Birds, partly due to its complexity, a feature most of US ENJOY. Often I will go on Global Chat, asking for more players to fill the extra slots. Some NR want a 3 or 4 person game, and often those do NOT FILL before the NR leaves, never to return.

2) I have encouraged a few other Risk players that are VERY good on other sites to consider checking out ConquerClub. NOT everyone who likes Risk likes CC. Some have found it too complex (too many maps, too many options, too many buttons....These are NOT things I suggest that need to be removed, BUT are BARRIERS for some, even many, new players.) I have had a few stay and eventually buy a paid membership, but my success on this endeavor has been limited.

When I first started playing here, I realized very quickly that there are many excellent players here and I would not win many games.

3) I sponsor a local chess club, and for a change of pace, we play Risk and introduce the game to a few new players.

4) I participated in InterNational Game Day at my local Library. Risk is one game we allow people to play. They choose the game. Board and card games make up most of the games played.

5) To paraphrase JFK, Ask NOT what CC can do for you; ask what YOU CAN DO for CC?

But overall, it was a very welcoming place. Today, this community is far from welcoming. Almost every post has an immediate negative comment posted on it. I think the focus now should be on how to get the community more welcoming. Then, we have a really good chance to see this site have more active users.

Again, I think this could help in retaining some users who join.

The most important thing is for the people that like this site to be premium members and keep playing. Even if the entire community is smaller, those that have stayed are smart and fun to play with in general and the clan scene while smaller is vibrant as well. That is where the community really thrives I find for myself.

Okay... I joined in 2007... Became a Premium in 2008/2009 (on Christmas Break from College and I cannot remember if Dec or Jan).... Left this site (stopped coming) in like 2011 when my comp died/life issues came up. Relogged into this site in December 2016... Became a Premium again about a week ago. Wooohooo. At what point/time was I counted as a member and when was I not counted as a member? If someone is off for a few months then return, how is that counted? I did not want to read this whole thread cause I'd rather play CC. 7437? I would say based on fremium/24 hour games available to join this site is doing well. If we judge by Speed Games then it's in the toilet. Night All

so, you were here for the start of it all... you were here for the peak of 30K... you are here now, when we are around 7-8K... huge difference in numbers... i just find the types of games i used to play harder and harder to come by... thus, i've adjusted what i play, to keep my interest...-Jn

Scoreboard numbers include every player who has played an active game in the last 30 days

Not exactly true. If they played a game but deadbeated they will not be on the scoreboard.
Correct is "Scoreboard numbers include every player who has played a TURN in the last 30 days"

I think your question(s) has been answered and that Owen summarized the overall trend rather well. We have seen a uptick in past few months, so hopefully the decline has bottomed out. The Guide Program, Other Games, as well as other improvement hopefully has stopped the long slide down.

The big problems (IMO) are the lack of a good way to put CC on mobile devices, such as cell phones, because of the complexity of the game that most of us love. We also have younger population who want more action and probably find Risk too complicated and too slow. The decline in speed games seem to validate my assessment; I am sure there are many other opinions out there.

Just wanted to point out another trend i noticed, and to again thank those involved in opening the trash can!

It appears your instincts were correct and interest in the trash can is greatly outpacing CC as a whole.

7345 - throughout the decline this week has always been the week that CC is hit hardest (30 days after the week between Christmas and New Year)

i actually don't really see a problem with the mobile phone thing. I'm taking all of my turns on my phone now and checking / posting on the forums too. The only thing you probably shouldn't be doing on your phone is playing freestyle speed games  But I do agree that it'd be a bit hard on complicated maps because you can't really use map inspect on your phone but otherwise I've really had no issue on my phone.

and it is indeed a pity speed games seem to be on the decline  I remember the times we could play 8 player doodle earth assassin games game after game for 3 hours at a time (lose hundreds of points in the process)

Go read the discussion here regarding Cell phones; you may have a bigger screen and you may be able to navigate better than most. Many on here complain about difficulties of playing on Cell phones. I have older iphone 4, I think, so small screen. iPad does have bigger screen, I have to go back and forth to see what I need for good moves; I cannot use some Panel Interface features on iPad, maybe the map inspect feature you alluded to....

I have been posting in this thread for about 5 months, and I have gotten some response on this topic; you can read whatever you want on this topic....most JUS post # at that moment or daily Tally, wherever they get that # from...I have seen it, but the actual # is like watching stock market most days, NOT important to me unless there is HUGE DROP.....long term trends are more significant to me and not the # at the moment......."one # does not a trend make".....David Stockwell....
