While I wouldn't expect it to happen this year, I'd love to see an African team winning it.
If only because the European/South American superiority has become a bit too predictable and stale.
Wouldn't mind an Asian team winning either, actually anyone outside the 2 power-house continents would be nice, except the ozzies and the seppoes

I had to google "seppoes" to find out it is a derogatory word for Americans.
Awesome.
I really, really hope the US beats England, for your sake.
LoL yeah, septic tanks = yanks so seppoes just a slang abbreviation. I believe it's actually an ozzy expression...
Back to reality, would you expect the US to beat England at Baseball? Yes of course you would; similarly I fully expect England to beat the US at footy.
You can dream I suppose, as an Englishman I've been dreaming most of my life

Fair enough.
I just don't think that the US beating England is as far-fetched as some would have it.
I think England is favored, especially with the US's porous defense, but if the US won, I don't think it would be the biggest shock ever.
Anyway, can't wait for Saturday. Taking the day off work, planning on getting toasted and looking forward to some good soccer/futball or whatever the hell you guys call it.

The game kick off for us in England is 7:30 in the evening, which lends itself perfectly to watching the other 2 games in the day, drinking beer, and then when the main attraction starts I'll be 3 parts to the wind, shouting and cheering with a bunch of my mates after an all day BBQ.
I can't wait!
What time are you Americans watching the game? is it a really late kick off or more like a midday kick off?

3:15pm on the far east coast of Canada. Earlier than that, the further west you go.

Does anyone here actually support North Korea (not that I do)? I felt pretty surprised that they could get in in the first place, but now it seems that their record gets better and better.

Have you seen their group? I'll bet almost anything they dont qualify for the knockouts.

1:30 p.m. here in the middle of the country. I plan on being drunk by approximately 1:02 p.m.
The other two games start at 9 a.m. my time, not exactly prime time.

If you get up at 7.00am, you still got plenty of time to get hammered

I wouldn't root for Mexico if I got to tap the chick in your avatar. OK. So that's not true. But if I got to tap her first, I'd probably renege lol. I'll make it clear that it's nothing personal against Mexicans. I just think Mexico itself is a corrupt shiz hole.

LoVo, comments?
Probably something along the lines of "just lulling them into a false sense of security before we meet in the final"
That'll be more delusional then his first post. The final, ha!
We lost fair and square, but to think that the US would be completely comfortable if they met us in the first round is untrue, as we created plenty of chances, especially around setpieces. So yeah we lost, but it is not delusional at all to think that we will beat the US if meet them in the first round
I don't care about the outcome too much. I'm encouraged that the US is scoring goals. That is our biggest worry heading into this tournament. Unfortunately in our long history, we've never had a great scorer at the international level. So it'll be a team effort if we win it. The desk is obviously stacked against us.

got tonkaed wrote:a group with north korea is the group of death? fantastic work by the draw this time around if the group of death is a team who hasnt been in the world cup in a like 4 decades and a team that had to qualify in a playoff.
It's not. Some idiot in the media must have wrote a column calling it that and everyone else just latched on to it. Check out the ESPN panelist's responses (group of death) question #6 from this espn article:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/columns/story/_/id/5260119/ce/us/roundtable?cc=5901&ver=us6. Is the Group of Death overhyped?
Ubha: Yes. There's one weak team -- perhaps the weakest in the tournament -- in North Korea. In 2006, the Group of Death -- Argentina, the Netherlands, the Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro -- was fully stacked. Brazil and Portugal advance, comfortably, even with Portugal's recent stumble against Cape Verde.
Martin: In a word, yes. Maybe we'll still get the battles royal between Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal. As of now, however, Portugal has seemingly forgotten how to score -- unless you count Ronaldo on holiday in Hollywood. With an anemic offense, Portugal isn't going to beat anyone except perhaps North Korea. It looks like it'll come down to Brazil and the Ivory Coast (assuming Drogba sees some action), unless Ronaldo can summon the ghosts of Eusebio, who scored nine goals in the 1966 World Cup to carry his team to third place.
Latham: Absolutely. An argument can be made that three or four groups are stronger from top to bottom. What gave this group its name was the assumption that three of the teams would be favored to advance from most other groups, but I'm not so sure that's the case given the injuries and form of Ivory Coast and Portugal. In the end North Korea may surprise by determining second place when it takes points from one of those teams.
Schaerlaeckens: A little. Traditionally, the Group of Death is defined as a group in which every team would be expected to advance if it were in any other group. So by that definition it's not quite a Group of Death. It certainly is the most interesting group we have, though.
Carlisle: That depends on your definition. If you're referring to Group G with Brazil, Ivory Coast and Portugal, in my opinion it's hard for any group containing North Korea to have that tag. I still say, top to bottom, that Group D -- with Germany, Ghana, Australia and Serbia -- is the toughest. Any two of those four teams could progress.

From a soccer standpoint, I respect Mexcio's commitment to winning and how serious they take it. On the other hand I do seriously think that the refs fear for their lives when the USA plays them in Mexico. That goes a long way in our inability to beat them in Mexico. I think the USA has been every bit as good as Mexico since 1990 (20 years) and even a little better which is why we won the 2002 Round 2 game against them. But they've been a worthy nemesis.

ESPN has been advertising the Britain-USA game as the most anticipated match of the World Cup. From an American POV I'm sure that's even true. But is it really the most anticipated (globally)? Like if everyone had a vote and they could not vote for a game involving their home country then would it be?
My vote would go for South Africa vs Mexico. It's the opening game in the tournament and it involves the host country. I'm sure a lot of fans especially in the Western Hemisphere hate Mexico and have an extra reason to root for the sentimental favorites (SA). This might be the most anticipated match I might think. But then again I do not know how many non-Americans and non British people are looking forward to our match-up or who they'd root for even.

I think Spain, being the best team (probably) would likely feature in the world cup most anticipated match.
I know the English are very excited about the UK/USA match and so to us as well its a highly anticipated game.
Good luck to both teams i say, the day is drawing nearer!!

LOL. Good point. But shouldn't you be more concerned that I didn't put the Great? I mean you could be Mediocre Britain for all we know.

Britain is the shorthand for great Britain so we dont tend to mind it beign dropped.
Anyway, Mediocre Britain is probably more apt right now
