Changes:
• moved City of Aberdeen territory down
• put the "r" in N. Ayrshire
• swapped colors of Western Isles and Gramps
As this progresses I will continue to tweak borders to allow more space for army counts and titles, but as we haven't seemed to nail down the territory arrangement I'm not losing any sleep over it now. I am, however, extremely pleased with the basic layout right now - 40 territories is great, and I think we've created several attractive options for initial objectives. The Western Isles, Borders, Dumf/Gall, Grampian, Central, and even the Cities would be realistic first bonuses for the strategic player to go after.

Beutiful oaktown
Move the sea route from orkney to aberdeenshire as it looks like its going to aberdeen at the moment

acctually the sea route should be going to the city of aberdeen, there is ferry route that way, however the more common ferry route is from aberdeen to shetland.
just a thought

I was about to say, playability wise that would make it harder to hold, but ATM, central gets 3 bonus for 5 terr, 3 boards and grampian gets 4 for the same, so making it go to aberdeen city makes sense.

The attack route was supposed to go to City of Aberdeen - I just forgot to move the path of the line down when I moved the territory down.
The version of the map in the image above should show the fix - you may need to reload the image.
Gimil noted that the more common ferry route from Abderdeen (city, not shire) would be to Shetland. Now, certainly our map of regional combat does not need to reflect the ferry routes - what army waits for the ferry? - but changing the route is a possibility. Instead of a dead end in Shetland we'd have a wicked bottleneck - Aberdeen to shetland to orkney to caithness to sutherland... I think the dead end may be better.
I'm kinda feeling it as it is right now... there are two really big continents, but six other bonuses that are very reasonable.

sorry to get on this colour issue again, but I feel like the orange jumps out a bit too much
any possibility of dulling it down a bit.
or, maybe just do with the orange what you did with the green area? have darker borders, but middle blends to a much lighter colour?
(possibly consider this for central as well)

I agree in regards to the orange. Also...if some sort of color could be added to the city icon...I think that would improve the over all look. The black and white image on a very colorful map just looks odd to my eye!

if the central bonus is 3 (which is not in dispute), then let's reduce the grampian bonus to 3. my reasoning is that, although grampian has one extra border territory, central has stirling which, like classic's north africa, is a strategic territory on an attack route. on the other hand, grampian's location is rather quiet and only two continents border it, so it's less likely to be attacked.
besides, being from dundee, i hate to see aberdeen being given preferential treatment!

Nothing exciting in this update...
• Cities have a bit of a tint. I could do more, but I don't want to make them entirely sepia.
• Grampian orange is a bit lighter, and the glow a bit darker.
• Islands color is a bit more purplish to set it apart from the greenish blue of central.
• Central is a bit lighter, and the glow a bit darker.

Right now you can hold either half with two countries. You should have some more sea routes to fix that.

I'm not sure, i've been quite liking that about the map. it sets a good division between highlanders and lowlanders, with a couple of easy conts on each side. However, i'm open to changes if the foundry dont like.
As for colours, the orange is much better oaktown, it really fits in now. Any chance of making the purple more like that of strathclyde in the first version. its a bit strange at the moment
And sorry for not checking in over the weekend, i was off to sunny Yorkshire

and a small version...

For the Western Isles region we are now using the color lifted from Strathclyde in earlier versions, right up to the same glow color. The glow is thinner in the Isles than other territories because otherwise they are so thin you get more dark than light.
Balsie: if you are still interested in doing the XML I can help you get started. Once you have the basic file with territories, bonuses, and attack routes, I'd be happy to drop in the army coordinates as it is the hardest part and I've done it a few times now.
unriggable wrote:Right now you can hold either half with two countries. You should have some more sea routes to fix that.
To me it works as is; one of the two territories in question is in a northern bonus, one in a southern bonus. If somebody controls both territories and everything behind it - either north or south - the game is pretty much over anyway... plus you'd have to hold Mull as well to collect the three southern bonuses. But if people think it's a problem we can fix it; I'd rather go back to extending Kinross south to make a third border between North and South than adding sea routes. Sea routes seem random to me, unless they are connecting islands.

I just want to point out that your methods for placing the army numbers on this map are brilliant. I'm very impressed.
I have nothing bad to say. Carry on.

I'll see if i can get started on the xml...

Okay, i've got the XML. All it needs is the co-ordinates.
Actually, it was quite relaxing doing that

nice work, bals. Once I get the coordinates in we can run it through the attack route checker.
the continents generally go at the top of the file before the individual territories. It probably doesn't matter for the site, but anybody who accesses the file will be looking for continents at the top so you may as well swap them for the sake of consistency.

Is there anyway that you could move the XML numbers for territories like the Shetland and Orkney islands onto the islands and not on beneath the names? That way they'd all look like Arran.
I'm just used to seeing them there, and it's confusing to see them beneath the names.
Other than that, I really like the look and feel of this map. Maybe you could even tone the colors down a bit so it'd look kinda like the Ireland map.

Hey Bals,
I've added preliminary coordinates (it will take a few rounds of tweaking to get it right), and I've changed the "&"s to the proper & code, and I get the following errors & warnings... some of the warnings indicate that some attack routes are missing, and the errors indicate you've either misspelled or left out a couple of territories. I'll see if I can't find the trouble and make the fixes.
Overall, however, you did a great job with the file - fewer errors than I usually have on my first draft!
Code: Select all
Error: Territory East Lothian has border Midlothian which does not exist as a territory
Error: Territory West Lothian has border Midlothian which does not exist as a territory
Error: Territory West Lothian has border Stirling which does not exist as a territory
Warning: Territory Lanarkshire appears in multiple continents (Strathclyde and All Cities and 3 Cities)
Warning: Territory Lanarkshire has border Dumfries, but not vice versa
Error: Territory Lanarkshire has border Stirling which does not exist as a territory

below you'll find the the corrected XML... other than leaving out Midlothian and leaving a space at the end of Stirling it was perfect.
And if you want to do something cool with your map, check out:
http://www.multiblah.com/cc_tester/
For the XML file use:
http://h1.ripway.com/rparodi/scotland.xml
And for the map use:

Here's a small map link if you want to see how far off I am with coordinates.

I GOT SERVED wrote:Is there anyway that you could move the XML numbers for territories like the Shetland and Orkney islands onto the islands and not on beneath the names? That way they'd all look like Arran.
I'm just used to seeing them there, and it's confusing to see them beneath the names.
Other than that, I really like the look and feel of this map. Maybe you could even tone the colors down a bit so it'd look kinda like the Ireland map.
To aid you - lots of scrolling required to find this!!!!
