True, George Lucas is sue happy these days. Wll, we don't have to call it star wars. Just say something like Star Destroyer map or "Thats no Moon" map instead of calling it the Death Star. You following me or am i confusing you?

Well at some point it ceases to be a Star Wars map. The best I think we could do is a star wars knock off map.

What do people even mean by a Star Wars map? Flesh out the idea, and it can be adapted

Is it an assault on the Death Star? A bunch of Ewoks? Luke trying to get into his sisters pants? These are all conceptual things that a map can be built around. As far as I know George Lucas doesn't have a patent out on space itself

That is also possibly copyrighted

heres an idea for once though, why doesnt somebody just make a map, doesnt have to be star wars, just a galaxy with planets and such that are fighting. Its actually really easy to make planets (what else do you think ive been learning to do in the last month and a half, among other things?). There was a space map somewhere, think its in the Scrap Heap now, but it was really good. Why doesnt someone do something like that?

edit: found that old map, Spaceness. I really liked it

I agree that there would be copyright problems, but it was a good idea.

OMG... i really just want to kill you for proposing this ludicrous idea.

no offense. like i'm really trying to curb my habit of scaring people out of the map foundry in general, but really?

like a bunch of people have said, a)copyright b)theres no idea
please, just because you have an idea, doesn't mean you automatically post it. like i sometimes wanna say, "hey oak, wanna meet up and smoke a fat blunt?", but i don't because i know it's inappropriate and illegal in the USA. Please, just think things through a little more?

Now, before you tell me it's a closely guarded copyright, I'm pretty certain we can get around it by misspelling the names of the planets.

Call it "Star Wores Universe"

Tattooene
Hothe
Bezpen
Casheeck
Corribbahn
Korusant
Alderon
Ort Mantel
Yeavin
Degobuh

... yeah. that would be way awesome.

It is the same with the Classic Map, once they took it down people were wondering if we could just change a few names and it would be fine, but it's not, it is still not going to happen. Trust me i tried but if we can't get around Hasbro's copyright of the Classic Map then how do you think we would get around the tight copyright on the Star Wars Series.

I doubt very highly he would say yes, but you could send an e-mail to George Lucas and ask him?

i bet you could get around it very easily. You think some map on some online risk is going to bother george lucas or any one at star wars? Barely had anything to do with them and they probably couldn't make that much money from it anyway. They'd be glad to have the promotion on the franchise. On the other hand, Risk and conquer club are in the same exact market and are competition and their ideas are important to win he money of the consumers who enjoy this sort of game.

Unfortunately, the issue of copyright isn't always down to whether the company can make money doing the same thing with 'their' brand name it's more often than not a case of the company not wanting to dilute their brand name. If (god-forbid) Lack decided to use the site and the map to promote evil doings around the world then the Star Wars name will be tarnished in the view of the copyright owners.

I'm not a copyright lawyer, but I like the idea and it may be worth looking into.

Prem.

Copywrite with such big names is never easy to get ahold of.

Something like star wars would be damn near impossible and any intellectual proterty rights would most likely extend to even the names of planets. If you are going to have to change the names of planets for a map to get around the copyright, your basically not making a star war map.

unfortunately, there is a star wars version of risk (or two, or three) being sold in stores right now. The copyright would definitely be an issue since CC would be offering something online for free that is also being sold in stores. makes it harder to sell the official product if CC becomes well known. But it would be an interesting idea, does anyone know how you go about getting copyright permission?\

After the copyright issue, the next problem is continents. Where are the divisions for those in the star wars universe? The boundaries between the new republic / rebellion and empire shift all the time, so you'd have to pick a specific time period. Secondly there are too many planets that simply are not really a part of any larger set. Also, how would you limit the avenues of attack from planet to planet?

sounds like fun, lots of questions before you can really get going though.

can't you just call it something else, like starry wars, and just add a silent "e" at the end of all the names of territories?
:P

if you call it something different enough to avoid the copyright it isn't a star wars map anymore, it's just a space map - which would still be fun, but isn't generally what ppl posting on this thread are looking for. On the other hand, just adding a silent e doesn't change it enough that you can really claim you didn't copy...

thanks for trying though... the slight change idea has been suggested before. I don't know if anyone's trying to get copyright permission...

just being the bearer of bad news, its better to make your own map then to try and steal another concept. a starwars map is longdead, leave it that way

Star Wars Clone Wars Board

Posted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 3:41 am
by KyrieEleison
I played this as a Risk board game, and searched for an online version, and that's how i got referred to here, but after looking around for a couple days, I couldn't find anything close to the board I played on. It was a good team game too, with the conflicts we had being me vs. my friend, and my teammate vs. my friend's teammate, and if it hadn't been getting late it would have ended up being entirely between me and my friend's teammate, which was surprising given the earlier positions. Anyway, the board had a good set up, with several large regions, or continents, around the edges of the boards, and one strip of four planets, or territories, in the middle as an entire region. It also had cards with special powers, and an Order 66 option, but those wouldn't be easy to incorporate.

Anything that should be added/taken away from the idea?

Do you have an image of the map? Also we can't use the Star wars theme, for copyright reasons.
