Alcatraz Island1.5 miles from San Fransisco, the "rock" and the lighthouse on the hill overlook the glimmering and beautiful San Fransisco Bay. Many recognize Alcatraz as the unescapable, maximum security prison, but it has also served as a U.S. military fort. Following the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo granted the U.S. rights to much of the American west, including California. San Fransisco was a valuable opportunity for trade on the west coast, and with the advent of the Gold Rush only a few years after the war, the value of the Bay area and all of California skyrocketed. To protect American interests in the region, the U.S. constructed Alcatraz, the military fort, in 1853 and manned it with 200 troops and 11 cannons. "The Rock" then briefly became a military prison during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
In 1934, Alcatraz took on its most notorious role: maximum security prison. Over 29 years, many ill-fated attempts were made by prisoners to flee the harsh conditions. Though there were at least 14 attempts, none were as mysterious as the attempt on June 11, 1962. Frank Morris and brothers Clarence and John Anglin constructed one of the most complex escape attempts in the history of man, using fake walls and extremely realistic masks to disguise their intentions from the guards. They then used raincoats as flotation devices and were believed to have headed to Angel Island. The three brave men were never seen again, and their fate remains clouded in the fog of San Fransisco Bay.
The prison was eventually closed in 1963 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, ferrying in around 5300 visitors per day during the summer months, who are eager to experience the rich history of "The Rock".

We've been very lenient with these deadlines, but I think ten days is more than enough. No more San Francisco C&F submissions will be accepted now.

The C&F task was posted
by Dukasaur on Sun May 29, 2011 2:08 pm
According to the original rules the deadline would therefore have been Wednesday June 1st 2:08 pm. Until now we have been accepting late submissions, because I thought it would encourage more people to participate. However, this doesn't seem to be the case. Instead of more people participating in C&F we have less. I think what has happened is that by being lax with the time limits we have encouraged people to procrastinate with the end result that eventually they never do get around to doing the task at all. I think the whole policy of allowing late submissions was a big error in judgement on my part.
Sorry...

From here on in, the deadline for the C&F post will be interpreted strictly. Any submissions received more that 72 hours after the task is posted will be ignored.
Nobody who has received C&F will lose them.
If you posted late in the past and we allowed it, those points are yours to keep. However, it won't happen again.
By way of making amends, the four players who posted on time in San Francisco will get one extra point each.
Therefore, the new C&F scores for Vancouver are:
[player]Rbelgrod[/player],[player]GregDavidson[/player], and [player]MattiWacklin[/player]: 2 points each.
[player]DoomYoshi[/player]: 4 points
[player]Perchorin[/player] and [player]WorldCup4James[/player]: 5 points each
Congrats to all who participated!

Good job.
Still three active games in San Francisco. Over the next day or two I'm going to start assembling scores and see if we can go to Cairns without waiting for those.

[player]GregDavidson[/player] had an absolutely amazing round in San Francisco, winning three of his four games and coming second in the only one he didn't win. Altogether he raked in 24 of the maximum possible 28 points, and by doing so he has pulled into the lead overall! Congratulations Greg!Other really strong performances in San Fran were seen from [player]jricart[/player] and [player]WorldCup4James[/player]. Congrats all!
Now, on to the less pleasant question of who is being eliminated. 30 came to San Francisco, but only 24 will continue to Cairns. The bottom 3 scores -- koontz1973, Fewnix, and rmjw10 -- are eliminated. Everyone with 18 or more points is eligible to continue, but DJENRE has vanished and support81ghent is resigning from the tourney, so that leaves one more to eliminate. The people with 17 points will have to fight over it in a tiebreaker game. At present, I don't know if it will be a 3-player or 4-player tiebreaker. Mekii, shakeycat, and wolfpack0530 have completed all their games and can get no more that 17 points now, but Shai who also has 17 is still in an active game and could get more. For those who are wondering,
Game 9148056 is the one to watch.
To reiterate, everyone with 18 points or more is advancing to Cairns. Good job all!

Okay, we have our answer. WorldCup4James has been eliminated in
Game 9148056, which means Shai will have at least one more point this round and is guaranteed a trip to Cairns!
The tiebreaker will be between Mekii, shakeycat, and wolfpack0530.

All San Francisco games except the tiebreaker have now finished.

Mekii 17
shakeycat 17
wolfpack0530 17
koontz1973 16
Fewnix 14
rmjw10 14
Not much has changed since I released the preliminary San Fran scores. Shai has reached 19 points and continues in the tournament without needing to go to a tiebreaker. Mekii, shakeycat, and wolfpack0530 are playing their tiebreaker. I accidentally had given Muzzel one extra point, so he drops down from 30 to 29, but still is in the same position. kiwi3 gained a point and is now tied with jricart in third place.
Re: DKs Intensities in Ten Cities! [Phase 4 - Cairns C&F]

My wife and I have plans for tonight that I am powerless to change, so I will be leaving shortly. It's still about an hour before I was supposed to release the C&F task for Cairns, but I won't be here at the proper time. I think it's better to be an hour early than to be about 8 hours late, so I will do it now.
Okay, with no further ado, here is the C&F task for Cairns. It's a three-part task, in order of difficulty.
PART ONE (ultra-easy, anyone who does it within the alloted 72 hours gets 1 point)
Answer this trivia question correctly: What cultural item did I refer to in the stop description when I said, "In San Francisco, we will hop on to Dwight's submarine and sail to the coast of Australia, and the beachfront city of Cairns."???
PART TWO (slightly harder, but not brutal. This will get you between 1 and 3 points depending on the judges' opinions, bringing your total to between 2 and 4)
Express some kind of intelligent editorial opinion about the item which was the answer to PART ONE.
PART THREE (I hope this one will separate the men from the boys, the true fans from those who just go look at Wikipedia. This will get you the maximum of five points, but ONLY if you are the FIRST person to answer correctly.
Answer this question correctly: "There were two possible answers to the question in PART ONE. Both were acceptable but one of those is more appropriate to our tournament than the other. Which one, and why?"

Dwight's Submarine is in the book and movie, "On the Beach." It's a submarine that tests radiation levels in a post-apocalyptic world.

The cultural item would be either the Nevil Shute book "On the beach" published in 1957, or the 1959 movie with the same title. Since I've never seen either, giving an editorial opinion would be a little presumptious, but from what I read in the summaries, it is clear that there was still a lot more honour in the world then than now. People were willing to die with dignity, a man honoured his family by not getting involved with another woman, even though his wife has died, and a captain still went down with his ship. I think that the book is more approprate to our tourney than the movie, because they actually do make a stop in Cairns in the book.

The cultural item is either the book or the movie, On the Beach, the book released in 1957 and the film in 1959.
This story examines what happens when society ceases to exist due to nuclear war. Survivors are given then option of euthanasia, but the key character in the book strives to find life and civilization. In the end, the captain goes down with the ship. But the story explodes the myth of the winnable nuclear war. The reality is that with nuclear war, there are no winners, only a few survivors struggling to live or to find a way to die. No one wins a nuclear war.
The book is more appropriate than the movie because they actually do stop in Cairns in the book.
