They don't know what is going to happen, exactly, which is why they're doing experiments in the first place. One minor hypothesis is that something could happen (I'm not going to go into the details) that might cause nuclear density, causing a black hole. This isn't something that the people involved actually think has any chance of happening, but it's one thing that was proposed. Of course the press picks up on the most "interesting" possibilities (read "sensational"). Some scientist tried to ease fears by naming a probability that something like that actually would happen -- his figure happened to be comparable to the probability of winning the lottery -- forgetting that non-scientists have a completely different idea of probability, as evidenced by lotteries. So now people are purposefully ignoring the fact that there are a lot more idiots than hadron large hadron colliders, and panicking for no reason.

Why does humanity have to explore to the very fringes of the unknown? is not a simple life enough? yes, because if 10 billion people play the lottery, a 1 in 10 billion thing will happen. The likelihood of YOU winning the lottery is very small. There aren't millions of hadron colliders.

A) Actually the scientists there are thinking that black holes will be created during the experiment, but they will be so small and unstable that they will disappear instantly.

B) You can neither see a black hole, nor will it be painful to fall into one. All your atoms will be ripped apart at the speed of light. Whether they rearrange on the other side is another matter....

C) This experiment isn't just to find the Higgs Particle. Some "spin-off" results could mean cures for cancer, plus a way to dispose of nuclear waste cleanly.

A. they still have no real idea what will happen. no one has ever created a black hole, so how can there be any predictions as to the outcome of having created one.

B. relevance? what does it matter if it hurts or not? you still no longer exist.

C. what if the cure is worse than the disease.

there have been some "good" inventions. I don't consider the automobile, cloning or the Nuclear bomb to be considered among the greatest of man's achievements. once something is learned, it cannot be unlearned, nor can it be kept from the general populous. there are some things that should not be tampered with.

Actually, something can be unlearned.

Consider the use of papyrus as an example. Romans killed everyone [which were the Egyptian priests] who knew how to make papyrus. We still don't know how it is made today. So it is unlearned, in a sense

i think that you actually make my point. to concede, i can suggest that the only way to unlearn something it to kill all that have learned it.

Does that mean we get to kill about 1/2 of the worlds pop? If not more?

My son is good at unlearning - he learnt the difference beween mean, mode and median last year at school, but after two and a half months oof summer break he had no idea, as I discovered the other night.

That's happened to me a few times. Finally, I actually know it all, so I'm fine, if that makes you feel any better.

Children are like that though.. You have to admit that mean, medium, mode and range are fucking boring.

I tried to unlearn that shit. Im never goin to need to know that.

To be honest, I had to go and look it up myself, once I reallised he'd forgotten. I think this must be one of the easiest things in the world to unlearn.
