The poll isn't made correctly because it didn't have choices such Russia, Alliens, and I don't give a damn cuz I'll be dead at that time
Anyway I voted for China. If Russia was there I might have voted for it.

I voted the EU because it is made of smaller countries with different laws so if people don't like not being able to smoke in one country, you can just move to another one without having to live in America or such.

areon wrote:Sorry but the globalization argument doesn't always work out. Take a look at diamonds, they can be found globally and have been mined thoroughly but the price has staid high. Now why is that? It's an artificial market where the companies deliberately make the prices stay up so that they profit on the long term. Other resources aren't able to do this because of their dependence such as oil, those resource rich countries could impose restrictions but would probably be tarrifed to hell for what they did sell so it wouldn't be a bargain anymore. It's useless to argue what improves the world economy because we benefit from the poverty other countries experience, so their standard of living will never go up.
Areon - you make some good points about the diamond industry. However, that's not a reason
against free trade, it's a reason
for it. The Diamond industry is a monopoly that's being abused. Illegal monopolgies and artificial markets harm the economy whether global or local.
You're right that we benefit from smaller economies, using cheaper labour etc... However, that doesn't mean we can keep them down (despite our best efforts) The world economy is slowly raising the bar accross the world. As China and India become more wealthy they will lose industry jobs to other cheaper countries, and slowly you'll see a ripple through other poor countries. It may not be as fast and perfect as we'd like but it'll happen. It's one of the reason that Oxfam and other charities now spend a huge amount of their time lobbying to get rid of trade restrictions with developing countries.

Ill tell you right now that Canada will never be a superpower.
Our government has traditionally been too spineless to ever exert authority over anyone. Besides, we like the nice under the radar deal, it works for us. Leave us be with our beaver tails and poutine and we'll be happy.

actually canada has a good chance of being a major power, assuming it isnt invaded first.
the next 100 years will see a major change in global politics from oil based conflicts to water based conflicts. We just dont have enough of it and we can't keep what we have clean enough to drink.
Either the world finds a cheap and easy way to desalinate the worlds oceans, which has its own problems, or countries like canada begin exporting mass amounts of water to the rest of the world, until wars break out between Russia, China and India over the water of the region and the US bombs everyone just because they have water - including Canada, unless they were smart and bought a bunch of weapons for that water.
Anyhoo, water politics for ya.
Otherwise, India or China...at this rate China as it has a much better education/social welfare system than does India...which has a much Higher degree of education but only for a very very small portion of the population.
Russia - can you even call it a great power any more, let alone a super power...they can't even control the oil in Central Asia, which is their own back yard. Their "Near Abroad" policy is a joke which noboy pays attention to and their armed forces are in shambles, being used to hold onto what little prestige they have left...the Tajik Civil war was plenty a demonstration of that one.
My vote is for China.
anyhoo, just some thoughts

World power? there is no such thing "visible"

its just whats "it looks like it is" , the world power belongs to Those who RULE the nations, they rule china, they rule the states and russia etc etc.. they just change the stakes to their desire .. but of course they lose control in the end as well since if we - stop - and have a look from above somewhere from the moon lets say.we will see ourselves striving for the last resources like a banch of morons eating their own selves away and the only ruler here is one - The sky and the earth.. no matter how much we harm them we will never destroy them, and its obvious of course what will happen in the end..
I read this somewhere..
"Heaven and earth are ruthless, and treat the myriad creatures as straw dogs..
If humans disturb the balance of the earth they will (eventually) be trampled on and tossed aside."

China China China. China China China. The idea that they aren't the supreme world power has only been lightly clinging to their self-understanding like a post-it note for the past few decades, and soon the rest of the world is going to decide they haven't been deluding themselves. No matter how poor you are, there's always strength in numbers.
I thought this thread might have been a Map Foundryesque discussion of what a historical map for 2100 would look like - like with all low-lying countries and lands submerged. One continent could be the Western Cordillera, another the Himalayas, a third the Alps, a fourth the Urals...and...uh...maybe that would be it?

quantity can't beat quality. the US has the most feared army on earth (the second most feared is israel's) and i'll bet the US will be a world power in 2100 if we can get out of our massive debt. otherwise, china. china is already taking a lot of labor (and mexico too)

The problem with the US is that so much of our economy is reliant on the investements of various other countries such as China and Saudi Arabia.

If china becomes a first world country, everything goes to shit. Earth can not produce enough to support all of them if they consume like a first world country.

2100 - my predictions
China will definitely be a major world power.
The EU will expand at least as far as Turkey and border Russia, however will exist as a federal state - with devolved power to the constituting parts.
The USA will lose some states but still remain a major power. (This is a complete guess as I know very little about the character of individual U.S. states - but I don't think a nation can survive for that length of time without some form of fragmentation.)
South America will see a major rise in co-operation between it's nations. (Possibly forming a body equivalent to that of the EU.)
The Middle East will undergo years of factional fighting - it will lose importance to the 'West ' as a result of the hastened development of non-oil based renewable fuels. Following this it will be a much more peaceful region.
These aremostly guesses based on a little knowledge. But not that much

USA will not last I am sad to say. Middle eastern countries are going to last MUCH MUCH longer than USA. USA may be a dominant power by 2100, but time to 2200+ it will be in a world of hurt.
The united states uses a ridiculous amount of water everyday, while spending almost the equivalent amount of money per ____ (where ____ is the random factor). Think about how much water you waste everyday and then think of everyone else, more or less, it's almost equal. Toilets flush gallons of fresh water, which could be used for drinking while we wash dishes etc.
Western countries have much less water, but they use it wisely, anything they can do with (i.e. 3 gallons) of water will be done, with only drops wasted.
http://www.actionbioscience.org/environment/kassas.html has an article on water use and statistics about it.
more than half of all people could be living in severely water-stressed areas by 2032
How much water is available?
A new appraisal shows that of the total 1386 million km3 of water (Earth's hydrosphere)2:
* 97.5% is saltwater, e.g., oceans, seas
* 2.5% is freshwater (54.65 million km3)
Now salt water can be converted into fresh water, but at a hefty price... Desalination plants range from $700/AF to $6,000/AF ($700 is an estimated price for a proposed California plant).
Another article at
http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/wateruse2000.html shows that
about 408 billion gallons of water per day were withdrawn for use in the United States during 2000.
THAT'S RIDICULOUS! 85% of this water was fresh water. That's 346,800,000,000 gallons of fresh water. PER DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 79% of this water was surface water while the others were ground water etc. Thermoelectric-power plants took around 195,000,000,000 gallons/day. Do you realize the significance of this?.... This was 6 years ago, the numbers can only go up.
The United States is ranked 4th in the world for population. A CIA July 2006 population estimation shows that the U.S. will have approximately 298,444,215 citizens, not including illegal immigrants etc, this only includes people registered on the census. The United States uses 80-100 gallons of water per person per day. This can be dropped 10-20 gallons per person.
There are many other contributing factors at the moment, but fresh water will be a huge problem soon. Unless [we], the U.S., stop our water outsourcing, we won't last for much longer.
EDIT--
Forgot to say my vote. I voted for Canada, because I'd like to see it happen. But I really think China will be it... or India, because they are freaky with computers, they're gifted.

Acording to Biblical prophecy:
1. The EU will be a world power
2. China will be a world power
3. Russia will play a role but be wiped out by China
4. The United States is not mentioned (thus will cease to exist or will not
be a power in world affairs)

... You can have more than one child in China now, legally.
... But you have to purchase the license - forget how much it is, but it certainly isn't cheap.
... And China has a serious shortage of women coming up in the next generation.... that will prove problematic. Girl babies are aborted and couples keep trying until they can have boy. If you go anywhere away from a major city, you see hordes of boy children, with a girl only here and there.
... They're going to have to import women to reproduce!

Just back on to the water issue - how much of the current landmass will be underwater in 2100 according to current estimates on global warming? I know in Europe at least Denmark is doomed...
Would make an interesting CC map to play I think - with an added environmental message.
