Well I shagged a middle aged American woman when I was young for $500 (back when $500 was actually worth something), so I suppose if I had done it 2000 times it would make the mill.

Well we're all having great fun... what's your point?

Seriously, if you're so upset about the direction this thread has taken, then go ask a mod to split it, or start a new one with a slightly clearer mission statement.

I would assume there have to be easier ways of finding how the companies are doing before youd have to actually touch base with them though, though i wouldnt know much about the fine details, i would assume starting with things the companies publish would have to be a reasonable place to start.

you're absolutely right, GT.

annual reports are a great place to start. i've read a large number of them over the years, as i've grown more and more active in investing in the American stock market.

there's no substitute for experience, and at the risk of jinxing myself for life, i've gotten pretty good at reading between the lines, even from just the CEO's opening statement.

it's more art than science, trying to divine from publicly available information what is REALLY going on inside the company, but so long as i keep getting it right about 75% of the time, i'll keep being able to absorb the hits and keep moving in a positive direction.

as far as what Fruitcake suggests, i have no real experience in that arena, but it does seem like it'd be pretty easy to alienate people thoroughly and rapidly, making repeat M&A's difficult.

i wonder what'd be easier... publicly traded companies or family owned. and what would be more likely to generate negative repercussions.

eh if i had to guess about the last part i would assume the reward from the publicly traded probably correlates to some respect the amount of risk.

People know more about corporate raiders (which kinda sounds like what fruitcake suggests in negative terminology) of publicly traded companies far more (assuming they do know) than from family owned ventures. Still id think that would be the route youd go after a while, because it seems like theres more money in there and the oppertunity for better networking assuming you pay out decently.

If I read this right, you mean, assuming one doesn't go round screwing people out of their legitimate gains.

Quite right...and there is one of the real secrets. You can turn people over once, twice, even three times, but at some point the word will get round. I have always made sure everyone gets to stick their snouts in the trough big time..that way they always recommend me if something alike appears on the horizon.

yes, to me that seems to be probably the most important element. In theory you shouldnt have to provide very much on the end, since they were disatsified. But if you set them up for some kind of mark you were planning on hitting for them, and supplied right around that much, you probably would have other oppertunities down the line.

The whole process is a neat little thing thats hard to quite place as far as capital and labor and all of the like.

I can proudly say, I have never turned anyone over who did not deserve it....you know the types, old ladies, daft chinless wonders etc etc...however, I have stitched up some real shits in my time...and, if I am honest have been turned over myself by some of the best.

Years ago, I got involved with some serious high net worth Scandanavians, a right bunch of marauders and was I out of my depth...wow. They took me apart stitch by stitch...I never saw it coming...first thing I knew was when a near to final meeting took place in L'pool where this company was based, they came over, we all turned up, within 5 minutes I was adrift with nothing to show for a great deal of work and effort, furthermore, they had blackened my name, got my so called allies to turn, and really did the whole job on me

Took me some months to get over that mauling, not only that, all my contract work, the lot, were all taken from me...it was little consolation that the owners realised too late they should have listened to me as they, in turn, found to their horror they were down about 60 pence in the pound!

It's shark infested waters.

id believe that entirely as well.

It almost seems like a lot of times it would be entirely a battle waged on information. I suppose it could be different depending on where you staked your claims but id imagine thats a heavy amount of volatilty to get involved with.

Anything to do with the the only thing i know is that i know nothing quote?
