I learned the hard way that holding is only dangerous when it's a double turns allowed game. Just don't play with double turns allowed and no one will want to hold.

Even with no double turns allowed holding is a viable tactic. By holding you can retain all your origanal troops which you would have gotten at the beginning of your turn. Also it allows you to effectively counter-attack against your enemies moves. If you cant stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. In other words go play sequentials.

Holding is for bitches who need to cheat. just because lack hasnt figured and implemented a choosen way to shut this down doesnt mean it is a valid tactic.
They make this site less fun.

I didn't say holding wasn't a viable tactic. It's just annoying, and if you want to play a normal, fun game, don't hold.
P.S. This is Zell - some ass changed my password and I can only log in as Froot Loops now.

And a rule against holding is babying players through the game. Really name one thing about holding that is cheating? You have 24 hours to do your turn in. As long as you do your turn with in that limit there should not be a problem. I dont usually use holding as a tactic often but if a game depends on holding I will use it. If you take out holding then you take out the entire component of timing which is an importent strategic variable. If you really cant stand holding then only play in games where people are against it.

Not really, this no holding BS which you are spouting would be completely countermanded because there is no chance to counter attack or save your production. I frankly look on holding as a challenge which one must get around. And just because I know what it takes for me to win does not make me a cheater.

It's not cheating. It's just lame and makes people want to quit CC.

If I find people holding in any games I am playing I will attempt to take them out before dealing with the other players that are here to play a GAME.
Holders waste my time.
My score may not be too high, but my ratio for taking out holders is higher than most, I assume.

Famous Agent,
the reason hernando cortez is saying that holding is cheating is because he refers to the game we all love : the real board game of RISK.
The freestyle option has been implemented by Lackattack to make the games faster, not to ruin the idea of playing the boardgame. Incidentaly, some people saw the advantage of holding and took this as a new strategy. It IS NOT AGAINST THE RULES, but this is more a moral discussion than a disscussion about rules. RISK is a game. It is made in such way that people playing it have fun. The problem with people who are holding is that they get the average fun of the players down.
Most of the time, there is only one "holder" in a game making this game no fun for the other 5 players. It goes against one of the most important moral unwritten law : "Your freedom ends when it takes out the freedom of others." It is the same thing with fun.
I know holding can be a HUGE advantage in a game, but it ruins the hole point of a game: having fun and enjoying just to play. That is the reason why people get pissed off, because holding is taking away the part where people enjoy playiing this game.
...Long post...

I hope some people can take what I said with some maturity and change their habits to get this game a little more "fair" to everyone.

everyone realizes the advantage that holding is. Most people just have the dignity not to exploit it. Its a cheesedick way to get around double turns. Agent i feel sorry for those who have the misfortune of playing against you and the other holders.

elebdae: Very well written observation.
SicklyLookingAgent: NEVER enter one of my games. And don't do it out of spite. Those tactics are best for persons with little else to do. I came on here to have fun playing Risk. I do not mind losing. I love winning. But, I hate playing cheats and others that would use new founded rules to make an aberration of a wonderful game.
No double turns

People that the play the holding type of game are shit at risk and need every little bit of help that can be afforded to them.
If it really annoys you, read the small print in the premium membsership, where Lackattack points out he will pass on all CC members addresses to premium members.
After that, you contact the CC bouncer enforcing that area by email, send a tenner, and request some good 'ole fashioned East End Violence round their house, at three in the morning.
I have been given the area of the south East of England and I have 214 members in my area, so send me fifteen quid for the deluxe going over, 12.50 for the front door being smashed down and all the kids' pets being fed to the rotwiller, or a straight tenner for the regular snooker ball in a sock wrapped round the head.
Contact me directly on 07950 852 101 for the twenty pound stunner, where its all taped on a video phone and emailed back, so you can watch it over, and over again

People generally play freestyle if they want a quicker game. Holding slows down the game in the same way deadbeats do. If you're on a four game limit it's quite annoying.
So don't just say play sequential. I think there should be a limit imposed on holding, say two hours, but not divided up into each phase.
As it stands people (generally assholes) will use holding. They may say it's a valid tactic, but unless you want your life totally dominated by CC, and having to check back every half an hour it's really annoying.
As long as it remains viable people will use holding. I have a solution, make it unviable. Threaten that you will throw the game just to screw them up if they continue holding, in this way it becomes a greater disadvantage than an advantage. Hell say it in your profile so the holders know not to join your games. This is bad for you too, but personally I care more about playing fun games than having high points.
Also I think we should make a list of "holders" it shouldn't be too hard to get reasonable evidence. There may already be a list, I dunno, don't check the forums as much as I used to.
Unfortunately all these measures will never be completely successful, so I plead with you Lack... code us up a solution. Make it optional if you want... let the holders have their fun... just not in my game.

Okay, I finally read this topic from beginning to end. If holding makes the game less fun, then it should be stopped. I think a one hour limit to finish your turn will do the trick (not divided up in phases - that's too much work

)
If anyone has an objection please speak up now, because I'm going to work on this over the weekend.
