The term you are looking for (if it was Mid West) would be Redneck or Cowboy, depending on the state of course.

No, it doesn't annoy me for the same reason as moz....but wasn't the Civil War over a few years ago ;)

Tell that to Mr. Cohan. The Civil War was well over in WWI when he wrote "Over There."

George M. Cohan wrote:Over there, over there,

allow me to take this flame-worthy: is the cowboy state you refer to Oklahoma? then you're not in the midwest as you previously stated. and if you're from colorado as i seem to remember, that's still not midwest. it's quite obvious that you're a complete fucking moron, not just from this thread, but from everything else you've ever written in CC forums, so to summarize, it doesn't matter where you're from, i hate you, and only a total fool would dare to compare the midwest to the south in terms of long-standing angst toward yankees/the rest of the world

cheers, fuckface!

Very strong words. ;)

I disagree though.
I don't hate Southerners.

I do think some have "Napoleon Disease" otherwise known as "Short Man Syndrome" for us "Yanks".

Ya'll know that there War of Northern Aggression ended awhile back.... right????

I also think it's funny how this thread... which started as a Europe-US thingy... has morphed into a North-South thingy.

I meant it as a joke from a Mid-Westerner.

Also, Nephilim, I was talking about Wyoming, thank you very much. And I have never been a greenie, and why are you flaming in General Disscussion? Take it to Flame Wars if you want to be a prick about it.

Ok, I'm gone for the best part of 24 hours, and look what happens.
A bunch of fools have a debate on whether the term "Yank" is offensive or not. Even if it is, I did not mean it like that, simply a slang term for "American". It's used over here in Blighty quite often I'll have you know!

Hoist the flag and let her fly,
Yankee Doodle do or die.
Pack your little kit,
Show your grit, do your bit.
Yankee to the ranks,
From the towns and the tanks.
Make your mother proud of you,
And the old Red, White and Blue.

Actually what Mr. Cohan did was to overlook the bitter wounds of the war of succession and focus instead on the enthusiasm of an America eager to go to fight a war in Europe.

Without any navy. You also lost.

You can bet your noodle the South had a Navy, oh sure they were outnumbered; they started the war with ten ships carrying fifteen guns while the North had roughly 90 ships. But the CSN grew and did cause a lot of hardship for the North. In particular, the South issued letters of marque (if you want to learn more about this go here--> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_of_marque ). Anyway, these Confederate privateers were successful in harassing Union merchant ships and delivered a significant blow to the Northern economy.

So take a peek here to see the Department of Navy photos of the SHIPS of the CONFEDERATE STATES... there are over 100 different ships listed here http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-u ... a-name.htm

And for fun I'll point out that many folks (mostly Northerners) aren't familiar at all with any of the Confederate National Flags... have a look see:
http://www.confederateflags.org/national/FOTCs_b.htm
http://www.confederateflags.org/national/FOTCsbr.htm
http://www.confederateflags.org/national/FOTC3dnat.htm

Now have a look at the Confederate States Navy Jack: (scroll down to see the Jack)
http://www.confederateflags.org/navy/FOTCnavy63.htm

Damn interesting stuff...

thank you for enlightening the foolish, robinette, you're a doll....

and i find it funny that several yankees have mentioned the war while no southerners have.....you know there is a lot more to our regional identity than just that conflict......

And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast

That's hilarious

I don't know if he overlooked the wounds... or instead decided to look forward instead of backward.... focus on what binds us and not what seperates us.

My understanding though... the Spanish-American War did more to unite he country and heal wounds than WWI. I coould be wrong... but the Spanish American War was our first major victory of an "Old European Power"... our initial steps in non-continental Empire Building.

Granted... by that time Spain wasn't much of a European Power anymore... but there was a lot of history to their colonialism.

Also... you Southerners will note I said "non-continental" Empire Building... specifically referring to our territorial claims in the Carribean and Pacific post-war. Killing all those "injuns" was certainly Empire Building.... and Southerners might say our "War of Aggression" was Empire Building/Maintaining too. ;)

Those though were on the North American continent. ;)

As an aside... I would guess most Yanks love out Limey brothers... and have no problems being called Yanks in a good-natured way. :D

Actually, the way that "makes sense" is year/month/day so it can sort properly without special format rules. I decided this with my "my pictures" folder in my computer, made a folder for each date, and the only way the folders will sort in the right order is year-month-day. So there it's settled. Of course though, I always write it month/day/year, so what do I know
