Actually, as much as i try to get spelling right, mispelling is something i do way two much..
Oops, looks like I've made some erroneous errors... more than you realise i would imagine... there are actually

Pass.

Let me get this straight:
The dice system is broken because it somehow hates you and gives all the bad rolls to you, and all the good rolls to your opponents? Do you see how crazy that sounds?
Isn't it more likely that, like most gamers, you have an exaggerated view of your own skill and prowess? And that, like most gamers, on some level you expect to win every time? So that when you don't win, its a surprise, and therefore more memorable?
When I came on this site, I had been playing, and winning, the board game risk for nigh-on 30 years. I have been totally owned here. I've sunken to freakin' COOK fer chrissakes. But I'm man enough to admit that in the big pond, I'm just not that good.
You should too. Don't blame randomness, that's just silly.

Its somewhat like poker...the cards matter, but in all honesty its how you play with what you are dealt.

He uses ZERO strategy. He marches until he no longer has men to march forth. 99.9% of my attacks on him are at a 3 attackers to 1 defender odds. I lose 72% of those battles.
I have won 4 games to his 17 against me.
The die system on this site is crap and needs to be evaluated and redone.
Scientifically, the concept of luck does not exist. I think you are calling on probability (or odds) and pointing out that the probability of you winning a game is lower than his. Technically, his strategy of suiciding constantly may be a good strategy when pitched against yours. Often, Risk is strategy and involves you carefully picking which territory to attack and where to place your armies.
At others, Risk is a game of probability and risk assessment (hence, the name risk (I'm not saying it was named after that)). Here are some odds you didn't know.
1 vs 1
Attacker wins 41.67% or 3/7
Defender wins 58.33% or 4/7
2 vs 1
Attacker wins 57.87% or 4/7
Defender wins 42.13% or 3/7
3 vs 1
Attacker win 65.97% or 2/3
Defender wins 34.03% or 1/3
1 vs 2
Attacker wins 25.46% or 1/4
Defender wins 74.54% or 3/4
2 vs 2
Attacker wins 22.76% or 1/5
Defender wins 44.83% or 2/5
Both wins 32.41% or 3/5
3 vs 2
Attacker wins 37.17% or 5/12
Defender wins 29.26% or 3/12
Both wins 33.58% or 4/12
DISCLAIMER- Fractions are rounded. Not actual representations of the percentages written.
This guy (I got the stats off of) actually e-mailed the company and did his own real life probability experiments and go these stats. You can try too!
PS- I would also LOVE any GODSTORM stats if someone could post them.

Always fight 3v2, even if you're outnumbered, that is the secret to eternal happiness and breaking insanely fortified continents, you'd be surprised how many 4 vs 10s you can win.

Don't listen to chris7HE. At least... not about the 1v2. You will never win if you attack with 1 army, it only allows you to roll 0 dice.

Then why do I frequently find myself losing battles where I have overwhelming odds - 7-1 10-2, etc.? I can see losing once in a while in these situations, but the numbers tell me that defenders' dice are more heavily weighted toward higher numbers.
Having said that, my strategy of late is to play more conservatively.
Bad Dice

I would agree that the dice on this sight are not entirely random. I have lost 800 points off my rank since I last won a game. I make it a rule to attack when I have a minimum of 2 to 1 odds for bigger battles, preferably 3 to 1. Despite this I frequently have ridiculous results like just now in game 1510403 where I lost 15, to the opponent's 3. Or game 1492546 where I had the opportunity to defeat an enemy who had only 5 armies over 4 territories for his cards and a chance to win the game, but got stuck when on an 11 to 1 battle I could not defeat him. I stopped when I had 2 left and not enough armies to take his remaining 3 armies on 3 territories. Luck is a bit of a long stretch to me.

At least thats a start.
Dont trust the dice so much. know that they are going to screw you over quite a bit, and plan your strategy around that, knowing that you will be losing more than you expect to lose.
Then, if you have bad dice, you were prepared and will be able survive.
If you end up having good dice, you end up with a few extra armies saved up, and they can go towards doing something else.
well....dice

i suppose dice are part of what makes the game fun. a simpler way for the game to run not relying on the dice would be to simply subtract defendat's forces from attackers and leave the attacker with what was left, implying that the luck was even. then there would be the problem of strategic location, which would be overly infuential with no lucky (or unlucky) dice to balance that out. maybe players could choose positions, territory by territory, but that would take forever. its fine the way it is, i suppose...everyone feels the wrath of the dice gods sometimes.

My philosophical self looks at baseball as an analogy and the argument that the umpires subjective judgment can skew the results unfairly. But if you hear the managers talk on the subject, they will almost universally say that this creates an unknown factor into the game that forces teams to consider what they do and how they play more carefully and to work that much harder. Over 162 games, a few bad calls will even themselves out. The better team will win more games over time. And one or two bad calls in a single game should not be a factor most of the time in who wins.

I'm a pfc so I don't know jack, but that doesn't prevent me from offering my take.
The things a player CAN control he/she MUST control (strategy/tactics/learning from others/knowing when to march on and when to lay low). What a player CANNOT control (need I say what that might be? Didn't think so) is beyond worrying about.
I have to think that each player at cc is susceptible to the same forces that I am (the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and all players in their games, and, the role/roll of you-know-what).
Therefore, the die is cast!
March on the Rubicon or go home to your wretched existence elsewhere and play your winkled tiddies, pleb!!

The dice program is unfair. I am to the point of thinking that cheat codes are being used. I sure would like to use them if they are available. This game is not rocket science. Strategy is useless when the defender always rolls 6's and 5's.

There is a strategy for defensive 5's and 6's known as patience and restraint.

by frankyboy
Yeah, I understand that. My problem is that my opponent's dice "line" always starts with 6's and 5's. That means I always lose the early rolls. I can count on losing 3 or 4 armies before I win a roll. It's just not fair. It ruins the game for me. That is why I'm not going to renew my membership. Only three more days and I'm outta here. I've kept the stats. When 75% of the initial rolls by my opponents are 6's or 5's, there is something wrong.
