If you can get your money back and rebook, do it manno. Fares super cheap and the problem, real or imagined, is escalating out of control quickly. Here near Portland Oregon, traffic, which always sucks, is down 70%. Stores are fucking gutted. Schools just closed (fucking all of them) for 2 weeks. Just bizzare.

Since I didn't follow the herding instinct and buy 3 fucking years worth of toilet paper, and now cannot get any, I may have to dip into my very large supply of ammo and go "shopping".

Buncha damn whackos!

Mrs thecurl is leaving for Africa a week earlier than planned, which is throwing all sorts of things out of whack - but she needs to be there for a couple of events and wasn't sure she'd get a flight as originally booked. Here's hpoping she can get home after the events are done. Certainly her next planned NYC conference is kaput.

It's the end of the fucking world today!
Loads of countries closing borders, imposing states emergency, no travel etc etc
Hell, trump will have it soon, given that people he met with a few days ago are testing positive. I wonder if he has any underlying medical conditions?

I know a half dozen people with trips to Euro and Aus/Kiwi planned for April/May and they have all cancelled. Careful though, you are likely better off waiting for the gov't to close borders then cancel so you can get all your money back.

My mother is booked on a South African safari starting next week. The safari operators said they are already below the break-even threshold. If one more person cancels, they're shutting down the whole safari.

The problem with quarantines is the lack of toilet paper

If you'd planned ahead a little better you'd have bought yourself 40 rolls last weekend like saxi did.

The stores near me where getting slammed today... many times out of stock.

Not a complete “run on the stores” but pretty close.

Most of the schools around here re closed for 2 weeks... i’m hearing they’re gonna extend it to 8 weeks.

That has nothing to do with coronavirus.

I'm planning on ordering double entrees tomorrow for lunch at El Gaucho Mexican Restaurant and am just preparing.

Yesterday a friend was like bragging on a whatsapp group with about 20 other friends about being in a bar.. hé took a vid and posted it.. everybody were looking at their phones. How idiotic. What a great plan, spreading the virus to be on your phone...

I assume this massive quarantine in the USA will slow the spread of this Virus.

In case you are not aware, many social events are cancelled: Sports (NCAA Basketball, NBA, NHL, MLS, MLB) and many entertainment events, too. One recommendation is to cancel any social gathering of over 15 persons.

I think Italy has shut down; other countries are likely in that situation, too. I have not kept up with ALL the closings and cancellations in the USA or the world.

Now many schools are closed for two weeks. I hope this does work. It will be quiet time in the USA and the world for a while.

The Pentagon-owned research center "Canada" has announced it has finished a C19 vaccine and is ready to go into mass production. Now that the Trump Administration has fixed C19 the crisis is over in North America. You may resume normal activities.

A Canadian company says that it has produced a COVID-19 vaccine just 20 days after receiving the coronavirus’s genetic sequence, using a unique technology that they soon hope to submit for FDA approval.

Medicago CEO Bruce Clark said his company could produce as many as 10 million doses a month. If regulatory hurdles can be cleared, he said in a Thursday interview, the vaccine could start to become available in November 2021.

In 2010, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, put together a $100 million program dubbed Blue Angel to look into new forms of vaccine discovery and production. A big chunk of that money went to Medicago to build a facility in North Carolina, where they showed that they could find a vaccine in just 20 days, then rapidly scale up production.

Clark says that once they get the green light, they will be able to produce 10 million vaccine doses a month.

Doing it without quarantines:

South Korea’s infection rate falls without citywide lockdowns
South Korea has seen a steady decrease in new coronavirus cases for four consecutive days, despite being one of the worst-affected countries outside China, although global attention has shifted towards outbreaks in Italyand Iran

As of end-Monday, it had 7,513 cases and 54 deaths. The Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said there was an increase of 131 cases from Sunday to Monday.

The country averaged more than 500 new infections a day for the past two weeks, but last Friday, this number dipped to 438, then 367 on Saturday and 248 on Sunday. The daily number of confirmed cases is reported the following day.

South Korean officials have shared their experiences in containing the outbreak, saying that citywide lockdowns, as imposed by China in Wuhan, where the outbreak originated, are difficult to enforce in an open society.

Conventional and coercive measures such as lockdowns of affected areas have drawbacks, he said, undermining the spirit of democracy and alienating the public who should participate actively in preventive efforts.

“Public participation must be secured through openness and transparency,” he said.

South Korea has been proactive in providing its citizens with information needed to stay safe, including twice daily media briefings and emergency alerts sent by mobile phone to those living or working in districts where new cases have been confirmed.

The importance of maintaining good hygiene has also been stressed. South Koreans seldom leave their homes without wearing a face mask, with many buildings putting up signs reading “No Masks, No Entry”. Restaurant workers and retail staff wear masks while serving customers.

Covid-19 tests are prohibitively expensive in many countries but in South Korea, all tests are free. The country is also capable of processing up to 15,000 diagnostic tests a day, and the aggregate number of tests has reached almost 200,000.

Those who are at risk are placed in self-isolation and thoroughly managed on an individual basis by health authorities.

Mookie's picture is funny.

Also, I heard of someone who bought 5 HUGE bundles of toilet paper, to me, an example of PANIC Buying. It was so much that it filled the trunk of his car and his entire back seat. Unless he has a huge # of folks in his house, that may last at least 1-2 years.

By order of the Governor of Virginia, public schools are closed for at least 2 weeks; some school systems decided to close before his order.

We are completely shut down here. The police will arrest you if you are in the streets. I’ve spent all afternoon yesterday on my building’s attic with my gf and our daughters drinking booze while listening to kid’s music, drawing with chalks on the floor, and playing with a teepee and fighting imaginary wolfs. The sun shines, great temperatures... it could be worse

In the USA where I live, it is not that extreme, but for us to be SHUT down to this extent is unprecedented, at least in my life and based on what I know. I do not know of this type of national shut down or quarantine for any disease. For example, all public and Catholic schools in my state are closed for (at least) two weeks. However, we are not arrested if we are out and about.

Even 9-11 did not cause this type of shut down. At that time, airlines were shut down for a few days; I did not track that activity. BUT to cancel all major sports, including high school championships and the NCAA basketball tournaments (called March Madness, by some) is very unprecedented. All major sports are shut down, for now.

One more point: some have criticized the President and other leaders for not acting sooner and more aggressively to fight the spread. I know I was skeptical of the need to do this, but I have slowly (in the past week) been more convinced that this may work. I am not sure all (or nearly all) citizens would have taken restrictions seriously. The President and many Americans have slowly (again, in the past week) been convinced of the need to do this. Of course, some are not yet convinced, and a few will never be convinced. The danger to me is small. However: 1) the danger to some (elderly, and/or those with pre-existing respiratory or immune system issues) and 2) the need to avoid our medical system to be overwhelmed by too many that are seriously ill are serious issues that can be avoided (by enlarge) with the actions taken by government leaders.
