Sorry, I've not been to Australia, or China for that matter. But I have seen both Crocodile Dundee and Hong Kong Phooey, so I'm PRETTY SURE I know Pratchett's source material!

WHAT are you talking about, "if I'd been to Australia"? That book was one goofball stereotype after another strung together without order or reason. Oh, hey, the continent is called Fourecks! Hahahaha, it's named after a slightly popular beer! I think that's supposed to be funny or something!!!

Actually it was funny Especially if you had experienced the australian environment and knew what each of the joke was about.

For instance do you remember how the aboriginals painted hands and Rincewind rambled on? Aboriginals do that. If you had been to Australia you would've understood more jokes.

And ZawBanjito, keep in mind that satire and parody don't have to refer to the real world. This would be the case with the early books and some of the witch ones.

i would say that the vimes books are among the most consistently great books - pratchett has struck a perfect balance between the surrealism and a linear narrative with a plot that is believable(in a discworld sense!)

Personally, Thud was my favorite, but I think that Small Gods was good also.

Small gods was awesome.

Personally, I didn't like any of his books except "Good Omens", which he wrote with Neil Gaiman. I highly recommend it. It's one of those books that is actually gut-wrenchingly funny.
