I'm going to make my comeback
but I don't have much time now so it's going to have to wait until later! I love to talk about this subject

Re: Vegans and Vegetarians, why oh why?
Since going to college I cut way back on my meat consumption. I really do enjoy eating meat, but no more than fruits or veggies. Honestly, I'll eat whatever is given to me. Coming back from college I've eaten a lot more meat since that's what my parents make. At school, I have a plate of food which usually contains pasta, a veggie, and whatever else looks good, maybe more pasta, veggie, sandwich, a meat side etc. and then a bowl of fruit and a glass of chocolate milk. On most days at school I have the equivalent of less than 4 ounces of meat daily, often none at all.

That is your opinion, and you certainly have the right to it. I think living on veggies alone is rather asnine, but that is just my opinion!

Look at our teeth. Obviously we are omnivores.
And if you don't eat animals because you think it's cruel, you better not ever drive anymore...cause I drove this weekend and killed more than 1000 animals. They are splattered all over the front of my car.

This reminds me of an excellent article I came across years ago in the New York Times, essentially discussing how plants and animals share a lot more similarities than one may initially think, they move, they have forms of sense, and all-in-all don't want to be killed either. Article.
Plants, however, just don't scream. Or scream loudly.

Neither do animals when they are slaughtered humanely.

where did exactly was that, in the chickencoop?
Please do your research.
Humans have 4 types of teeth.
Incisors, Canine, Premolars, Molars. Go read about them and you will understand how wrong you are.
And not through a chicken coop..it was on the freeway...and they are bugs and insects of all sorts.

Oh, but with a big ol' baked potato and a salad, of course!!

If I was able to raise my own animals and slaughter them I would eat a lot more meat -
My biggest problem with meat is the industry and the convienient packaged with plastic end results you find at supermarkets - You have no idea how this cow lived, died or slaughtered - I know its the same with the vegetables I buy, but they for whatever reason seem a little more benign.

We have hunted (responsibly) upland game for over 40 years (that pic in my avvy is our last chukar trip); Chukar, Quail, Hungarian Partridge are all awesome in a crockpot with a simple white sauce.....add shrooms / whatever and have over rice / noodles. We also bread them and bake in some simple cream of mushroom sauce. They are also awesome smoked.......the meat is very low in water content / extremely lean, so typically a sauce is preferred to keep the moisture level acceptable.
My sister and bro in law raise chickens for eggs primarily and secondarily for eating when they overpopulate; they added 60 quail eggs this season and 50 hatched and are ready ;o)
If you want more exact recipes, I can dig them up - I typically dont cook upland fowl till mid october so they are put away....lol.

I imagine this would work well for grouse.. just grouse is a tad bigger?KoolBak wrote:We have hunted (responsibly) upland game for over 40 years (that pic in my avvy is our last chukar trip); Chukar, Quail, Hungarian Partridge are all awesome in a crockpot with a simple white sauce.....add shrooms / whatever and have over rice / noodles. Sadly, I live in town and cannot have chickens. I am looking for a place out of town, though.KoolBak wrote:My sister and bro in law raise chickens for eggs primarily and secondarily for eating when they overpopulate; they added 60 quail eggs this season and 50 hatched and are ready ;o)

Sometimes, but no rush. Around here its grouse (native) and stocked pheasant. Neither are in season here now, either. Most chicken recipes work well for pheasant, though pheasant has far less fat and cooks much more quickly.
EDIT.. we don't even seem to have much squirrel or rabbit any longer. Partially its habitat change, but partially.. it is strange.

Re: Vegans and Vegetarians, why oh why?
We also harvest grouse when we come across them, although we arent in wooded areas much during chukar season; we have the Ruff but I hear they are all similar. As far as meat, the grouse is very similar to the Hun (hungarian partridge)...a redder, stronger flavored meat. Chukar and quail are white.....we used to hunt lots of pheasant (also that good red color) but the farmers that used to let us now charge cityfolk big bucks for the priviledge ;o(
All upland fowl (all birds discussed) are very similar in thier leanness....all upland recipes work well for all these birds ;o)

Max, humans are carnivorous (omnivorous) by nature, being able to stomach it and even desiring it is part of our id.

I have read it. (copied here again for the la-- er busy
Ironically, some biologists now credit meat eating with our advances. Why? Because digesting plant material takes a lot more energy in comparison to meat. I will try to find the story I heard not so long ago on this.
At any rate, I think the whole vegan/carnivore bit is just another example of why we should not be extremists on much of anything. Those who are tend to well.. be less than logical.

I think I left my id on the school bus one day a few years ago. Probably explains all this.

Are you trying to be rude with that? What do you mean talk in 3 or 5 years?
A carnivore is a sole meat eater.
An herbivore is a sole plant eater.
An omnivore eats both.
Vegetarians are herbivores. The rest of the human population are omnivores.
And your vegetarian propaganda website isn't unbiased facts.

In addition, our bodies are structured so that our needs can be met by the foods we, as omnivorous mammals, eat (meat, fruit, vegetables, etc.). Granted, there is some adaptation to speak of, if your diet is consistent, but your body's make-up can't be that dramatically altered. There are nutrients in meat and poultry that our bodies still need, regardless of whether you eat it or not.

Those same nutrients can be found in other food sources, to varying degrees of concentration.
