yeah the legend was just thrown together at the moment and not realy up to par. I wanted to get feedback on the bonuses and balance of the board before I finalize the legend and make it look good.
For the board being to long this is the large vertion of the map. I havn't attempted making the smaller vertion yet.

That has been something I have been struggling with for a while now. I thought I had the text good before but that was before I shrank down the map for yah. There are certain nations that are just so small on the map with its new size that I am going to have a difficult time getting any font to come out clearly. One of the reasons I picked this font (Worstveld Sling) is because of it’s readability in small point. It was horribly difficult to see anything back when I was using Arial and times new roman
The grass country has been giving me trouble from the very beginning because it is a small nation completely surrounded by other small nations. (and unfortunately those borders I did not make up, they are real)
I have increased the font to a minimum of 14 pt for ever territory name. Is this big enough for you? I still have to rasterize the layers and rotate them to make them fit on the map better but this is the size I was going to go with.

Cleaned up the key
Moved the sea country up and to the right to shorten the map a little more.
Removed a few of the unnessisary islands that were not part of the game

I suggest stopping work on this until you've got clear answers in regards to copyrights and all the other fancy legal stuff.

if were serious about this copywrite stuff we could set up a team (or perhaps a mod) to be in charge of asking for permition then it becomes more official and may encourage more people to give us permission

Nah, it shouldn't be our duty, it should be the cartographers duty. Comes with the territory of making a map.

Well right now the problem doesn't seem to be getting permission it is with getting a response at all. I have been trying for just about a month now and I still have yet to get any type of response.

Sadly in copyrights getting no response means no most of the time. In this case it might be more complicated as they could be genuinely considering it, but it is hard to place who has rights over the content of the map. I could see very good arguments for both the Anime and the Manga (and they aren't the same people).

Yeah I know. The manga(Masashi Kishimoto, Jump Comics, and Viz Media) did put map a map at one point in the books but it was incomplete, somewhere around ¼ of the countries. Later through out the course of the anime (Yuuto Date, Studio Pierrot, TV Tokyo and Viz Media), they have been showing arrows on a map to show where the characters are for scale but even then most of the time the map doesn’t really match up.
So in the end neither source has ever published a full map for the universe, it has been fans putting it together using whatever little information we get. Because of that I have been much less worried about the map (especially since much of it I have made up myself to make it playable) and been much more worried about just using the name Naruto in general. If I pull Naruto off the map, change the names around, change a few borders to make it even a little more unique, and call it just “shinobi nations” I don’t think there would be much to get permission for at all.

but if someone had the right skills and connections to work out copyright and legal details, and were willing to take up the post, they could be a real asset to the site

Now that I think about it.... Does the United States recognize foreign copyrights? This site is based in the U.S. isn't it? I would assume in this case it doesn't matter because the company in question is active in the U.S. market, but if it wasn't?

After trying for around a month now my patients with trying to get copyright permission with this map are starting to wane. I have yet to receive any contact whatsoever from any of the people that I have attempted to contact regarding this. I’m thinking that they might be allowing unofficial fan creation but don’t want to say anything because once they giver permission officially they loose the ability to defend it later. But I know that excuses like that will not fly on here because the moderators what something official before anything gets posted.
So now I am looking at pulling the Naruto name from the map and making it “shinobi nations” alone. Since Naruto will be dropped from the map I can make changes to some of the more inconvenient borders. At the moment here is my plan
- I am currently working on getting new names for all of the countries/territories using shinobi/Japanese mythology as a theme.
- Drop a country from the Assorted Shinobi nations
- Expand the borders of the assorted shinobi nations into the land of wind to make more room for text
- Extend the river between the land of fire and the assorted shinobi nation to make both a little easier to hold
- Change the shape of the shore line for the Aburame territory
- Move nagi island and O’usu island south and rotated a little bit (to keep the volcanic ring shape)
- Remove the unused islands near the land of water to make more space
Anything else you guys think I should change about the geography while I am at it? Or something I listed that you think I shouldn’t change?

Hi Mr Genie,
The map looks terrific to me. One very minor point I have is that "Forest" is spelt with one "r" not two (as you have in Nara Forrest and Forrest of Death). Obviously, if that's how it's spelt in the manga this map is developed from, please feel free to ignore me!
Best regards,
Mike

Update
After playing with the borders for a while and changing things subtly I was still just seeing the original map so I flipped it. This doesn’t change anything game play wise but for me at least makes it look much less like the original.
Other then that I made some more subtle changes as well. I changed the mountain and river borders slightly and changed some of the waves and ships around.
I'm still working on getting new names for the map. I'm about half way there. Hopefully I will be able post a new list of territory names and why I picked them soon, and then be able to add them to the map.

I really like where this is going
When you have the names and such, I will certainly have a good look at this map.

I think you may have to combine some of the smaller islands in the light blue continent; otherwise, you will have no space for army circles/terreitory names.
