All I'm going to say is, if you are going to do it, do twilight princess hyrule map!

OOT hyrule is too small imo for a CC map

About the copyright thing, I meant that codes and laws are vague on the matter of works that describe fictional worlds. If a map like this is infringement, then so is the entirety of every game walkthrough, and every drawing based on a description in a book (like any painting of something from LotR, for example.) This is just a visual summary of the game, which is no more infringing than a simple textual description of the game world.

Maybe those WOULD be considered infringing. I don't know. It's not really decided unless a court says so, and on that kind of thing, as far as I know, they never have.

I'm not saying don't do it, I would just suggest you get the go-ahead from CC and/or Nintendo before you spend a lot of time on it.

The following is lifted from http://www.copyright.gov:

"Derivative works, also known as “new versions,” include such works as translations, musical arrangements, dramatizations, fictionalizations, art reproductions, and condensations. Any work in which the editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship is a derivative work or new version.

Only the owner of copyright in a work has the right to prepare, or to authorize someone else to create, a new version of that work. The owner is generally the author or someone who has obtained rights from the author."

For some case history on derivative works, check out http://www.artslaw.org/DERIV.HTM

Indo-china is one of the worst playable maps and the worst maps graphically. Twilight princess map would be bigger, better, nicer, more playable and a better use of space (also you could use the twilight world as an excuse for wormholes accross the kingdom.)

I'm guessing the names are trademarked... hyrule... etc...

although no money would be made from it, none by the creator, plus no one would ever find out...

I'm also guessing there are a lot of other non-commercial games made with legend of zelda theme, I think nintendo would rather catch ilegal rom site owners rather than things like this....

Unfortunately, I can't make a Twilight Princess map right now, because I haven't been able to get a Wii yet, and I'm not going to waste my money buying both versions. ;)

CC charges users, so there is some money exchanging hands. As for whether or not Nintendo would do anythiing about it, that depends on how vigilant their legal team is. They may not care, but finding the map and this forum would be as simple as a google search.

Tolkein Enterprises, which owns and licenses all things middle earth, apparently hasn't sent this site a cease and desist letter yet, so that map could remain playable indefinitely. The same could happen for this map.

Code: Select all

Hyrule Castle  2
Death Mountain 4
Zora River     3
Kokiri Forest  4
Hyrule Field   6
Gerudo Desert  3
Lake Hylia     2

Debate... :P

I freakin love the idea and what you've done so far, but I'd like to see a slightly different graphical style implemented. Make gerudo desert more sandy textured, kokiri more grass/treeish etc. ... if possible.

Also copyright etc. ...

i love this map idea. not only because zelda kicks major arse (still play N64 just for ocarina of time heehee) but the map in itself looks very fun and playable.

ummm, u can get Twilight Princess on GCube, if there still available, that is, seen as tho it so popular.

also, i think we should sort out the copyright stuff first before we finish the map, so if we cant make it coz of the copyright, there will be no time wasted on the map

you have allready heard about the copyright thing so im not going to say anything more on the matter. i think all temples shouldbe linked to the temple of time instead of to eachother so its a little less confusing. Also if you can try ad divide hyrule castle up into parts like drawbridge ect. other than that i think its great :D

Draw bridge :!: :?: :!: :?:

Copyrights shouldn't be a problem. There are so many parodies, fan fictions, and other assorted crap out there on the vast electronic sea known as the Internet, that Nintendo isn't going to care about another one.

As for my 2 cents about the map, you should make it death mt. instead of just death. Death just makes it sound dumb.

My vision for this map is to be low territory and very open, but I'm not the author so that isn't my choice.

If I was the author I would be going with the temple connections, the obvious lake connection (especially for those that have played) and for anywhere you can warp to with the flute to all be connected.

There are also a lot of good suggestions here for making this more of a massive map, and a lot of these territories could be broken down into smaller ones if you wanted to.

Again with Nintendo and copyright, they really are unlikely to take any interest. Now if it was Sony you wouldn't stand a chance, but it isn't Sony.

Okay, so, based on the comments so far, here's what I'm going to change:

Textures. The ones I used are just placeholders anyway. I know they aren't great. Might not fix it right away, but I will eventually see what I can do.

I'll add the three main great fairy fountains. I'll call them Din's Fountain (borders Hyrule Castle), Farore's Fountain (borders Zora Fountain) and Naryu's Fountain (borders Desert Colossus). I think that should give a good number of territories.

I'll change the name of the Observatory to Lab, as it really should be.

I'll make the Gerudo/Lake connection one-way.

I'll change Death Summit and Death Ascent to Mountain Summit and Mountain Ascent. Probably better to just take the word 'death' out completely, it DOES sound stupid.

I'll change Lost Woods to Sacred Meadow, and Kokiri Woods to Lost Woods. I may try shuffling the borders around a little bit too, to make them more true to the game, because there's already enough fudging around that area for gameplay reasons. (Connection to the river? What?)

I want to wait on deciding what to do about movement and the temples. Ideas include just plain linking them all together and linking them all to the Temple of Time.

I love the idea. I would be the first to try it out

The shape of this map is pretty ridiculous. It doesnt seem anything real, just looks like a 5 years old child draw. Is there a way to add some reality feeling to this?

that's as close to the game map as you can get. just about anyway. I just played the game today and that is (shapwise anyway) close to what the map looks like.

Yeh 'tis exactly what the world looks like in game. Doesn't get more 'real' for fantasy world so i don't see why it should be changed.

You can't have ever played Ocarina of Time as a wee lad...

Actually, I'd argue that the actual game map is LESS 'real' looking. There were changes made for playability reasons.
