To me it's a toss-up between Star Wars and The Matrix.

I agree, but I have to go with old school...The Matrix was a great movie (especially the philosophical concept), but StarWars has to be the best. It was really a movie that inspired a whole generation of kids into Sci Fi...now StarTrek the tvshow, may have helped with that as well, but the movies didn't come until later on, so I couldn't pick startrek. I don't know how many kids would sit down and watch 2001? I remember sitting down and watching 2001 when I was a kid. It just didn't spark any interest for me...very boring. But StarWars was AWESOME!

2001 is much to deep, which is why it is some peoples favorite.

The monolith was a compact vehicle of the universe, right???

Well, I don't like any of 'em, but many people are very fond of the Charlton Heston version. I have at least a half-hour rant ready at hand any time about why the plot is shit. (makeup great, some great acting, but the plot is seriously crap).

I basically love the movie for the last scene. Other than that, I largely agree with you.

2001: A Space Odyssey is the absolute most boring, slow-moving, painful movie I've ever had the misfortune of watching. It's a movie built around one (very good, but very over-hyped) line. That's it. It's a movie of one line. Should never have been produced.

Aliens (2nd one) is an all time fave of mine...one of those movies I can watch over and over....

I dinna see anyone mention Galaxy Quest....I love this movie too

Soylent Green was a classic....and Silent Running really struck home when it came out....creepy.

Matrix takes the lead over star wars old school!

I have seen both of them more than any other movie, as both of them were my choices

Jurassic Park is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Twelve Monkeys is outstandingly good too.

Good one, I considered Total Recall though. those movies just dont compare. but they were both highly entertaining, but have not managed to grow a cult following, yet predator did spin off a few sequels, the main star arnold did not star in them. predator 2 and i think there is a 3, they drag the brand name of predator down IMO. Nobody has mentioned robocop either. Those were pretty good, but it has been a long time since I have seen them, and probably didnt see 3 and 4.

Agreed. Not only did it revolutionize the film industry, but the story has to be one of the my favorites. Heck, the movie caused me to want to be a paleontologist for most of my childhood. It has to be one of my all time favorite movies.

I absolutely fucking agree. Watching that piece of crap was the biggest waste of time in my entire life.

I voted for Matrix and the old star wars.

Ps. I'm a bit surprised Avatar wasn't in the vote. I at least liked it better than the new star wars movies, which were very meh IMO.

I enjoyed 2001. For 1968, it worked. What I got most from it was the power and the struggle of humanity versus technology. And the monolith concept is very intriguing. Good classical score too

The book is million times better.

A couple of months ago I watched "The Man from Earth (2007)" and I liked the argument (an immortal cro-magnon that claims that has been on earth for 14,000+ years).

One film that really disappointed me was War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise and Spielberg)

The scene that just makes me want to punch the screen is the bit where the crowd surrounds Tom Cruise and kids in the car and (in the middle of an alien invasion in America) Tom Cruise is the only American with a gun?

I actually rather liked the film. What did make me laugh was that Cruise (in an interview) asked people not to reveal the surprise ending to their friends!

What a surprise ending, huh? EVERYBODY LIVED! A MIRACLE!

\Tom Cruise playing the role of some low-middle American (almost hick-ish) man is just a complete joke. Tom Cruise doesn't fit that character, and he can't pull it off.

As far as the movie's concerned...

Well, it was a surprise ending EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE BOOK WRITTEN IN 1896!
