But how are you going to judge intention? For all I know that guy with the blackface-av was innocently using something he found and didn't know it was offensive. I'm from the Netherlands, we have what people call "blackface" in one of our national holidays and I'm certain people using it do so with no intent of racism yet I can see why people would think it is. (Mostly people from different countries, as I've never heard my friends say anything about it.)

And what about the BpB sig? The intent there had nothing to do with China, yet Nightstrike said it would not be allowed. Does the intent there matter? I'm sure I'm one of the few people who got the meaning behind it that was not intended, so should it be taken down?

That's why we given out warnings before any harsher actions...to warn people if they've accidentally stepped over the line. Such was done in this case, in addition, whenever there is an avatar that breaks the forum guidelines, it is removed, as was also done in this case.

i can not speak for brett, but it falls under the "art work" rule i was given by a mod. and as far as my avatar goes, ony 4 of you have complained about it, after you knew what it was. it is an award winning, government funded piece of artwork that the supreme court ruled was not offensive. art is art... and nobody would have known what it was had jbrettlip not pressed the issue trying to find out what the guidelines were. i have no intent to offend anyone, and my avatar is going to remain.-0

p.s.-hulmey, why don't you go look up "piss christ" on wikipedia or any other internet info machine, and learn a bit about the art before you deem it as religion bashing. you didn't even know what it was prior to being told, and were not offended. yet somehow, once you were TOLD and GUIDED to the fact that you should be offended... you were... way to think for yourself!!

Honestly , why should i have to report it? Where is the customer service and the mods? Are they all busy, happily locking and editing threads!!

Have a toasty one

I cant really care what some judge in america proclaimed. America is a country without morales anyway. Once someone knows what it is, then it is offensive!! Why should someone remove their blackface avatar if u aint even gonna get rid of your poor taste in art!!

You are absolutely correct. Last I checked, Morales was the President of Bolivia, not the USA. Thank you for your keen insight on this issue.

night strike had not seen the sig in question, and had only read your inflammatory, yet informative post... i am sure he is now fine with it, since we discussed it via pm... if you have an issue with it, please go to cheats & abuse and report it, so the mods can have a closer look. and while you are at it, please report the web site you culled your image from in your post... and not to mention the thousands of newspapers worldwide that ran editorial comics with cuffs as the olympics rings. i was unaware of it until you pointed it out to me, so i looked it up. perhaps, since it is being so widely distributed in the western world, you should file your complaint with the chinese gov, so they can deal with vace cooper and his creation privately.-0

By the way, this thread is an exercise in proving that people really only read what they want to read, at least the majority of people responding to this thread.

How many times now has Owen needed to explicitly restate the point and purpose of this thread?

Either people are deliberately trying derail the thread with red herring arguments or are too stupid to comprehend the words in front of their eyes.

And either conclusion sucks.

i am not asking for it to be removed, i was asking for an explaination as to how it was deemed not offensive, and where the guidelines were for avatars. first i was told it was "art work" and then i was told about a "common sense" guideline used on avatars... i just wanted to understand why one avatar is offensive, and another is not. once the mods gave me a ruling, i respected it, as i always do, i simply wanted clarification since it seemed so askew. try to read a bit closer, hulmey...-0

They dont ahve guidelines for offensive and abusive usernames or avatar's. They are judged on a case by case basis. However, brett's avatar was specifically attacking wicked!!

well, even though i didn't mention that avatar specifically, i guess i'll address it since you did... it didn't have her name on it. it didnt' have her likeness on it. it was a pic of jbrettlip with a real tick in his hand stating, "i love lymes". what if he had a pic of a deer in the photo with him, with the same line? anyway, brett removed it of his own volition, and even told the admin that asked him to, the exact day he would do so. he got his point across and moved on to a more subtle avatar of sliced limes with "i love limes" in the avatar. how is that offensive? in my opinion it was satire.-0

on a final note about the ruling i was given, judges are required to author decisions -- meaning explanation behind their rulings.

my request, under that pretense, is not only completely appropriate, but a gracious reminder to the oversight of the mods that issued the hastily prepared (and unexplained) 'decision' in the first place. i think andy for his time and will be moving over to cheats & abuse, as he suggested.-0

Given enough rope Owen shooter will hang himself, provide him with enough subliminal taunts, and he will eventually shoot his feet out, just like the people he tries to shoot himself.

Why would I do that? I don't care about this. Shit, you could say "I HATE CHINA" in your sig and it wouldn't bother me. You could say anything in your av or sig and it would't bother me in the slightest. I'm a staunch free-speech advocate and believe that anyone should be able to say whatever the hell they want.

I brought up this issue because I just like being a pedantic arse.

It seems to me Owen, that you are an attention seeker of the highest order.

Your Idea of fun, is at the cost of other peoples misery.

If you can find an Avatar that is fitting to this testimony, then our attention for you , will be exactly the same time span, as it was before..
