So using BOB or not is just a question of how much time you want to put in each game. You get a better overview if you play without BOB, because you spent more time looking at the board, checking the options and you understand stuff like the bonus system, you don´t simply check by BOB if you have a bonus or not.
I am sure you are right about playing more carefully and understanding the bonuses better without BOB, though I can't imagine doing it. I guess I am too lazy. It is such a useful tool and I am so used to it that if I didn't play with it, I would be insecure and always think I was missing stuff. One of the most useful things about it is seeing immediately what the tert counts are.
