Names -- I've always just liked maps with territories that...hm...actually feel like I'm conquering something, you know? Rather than A5. If I wanted to play Bingo, I'd go do that on some other site.

No Names -- It makes the areas easier to find. I know where all the 'M' names are located. I'm not sure off the top of my head where 'Aura' is though. I'd have to search a little harder.

So right now I can't quite decide which version I would want.

Also I think it may have been mentioned before that your current images of the people seem a little...hm...odd.

yes andy isee benefit of both also....now that i have done it....i prefer the named terts.

would it help if it placed "ownership" indicators for the ones that appear difficult to find?

I agree with everything Andy said, but I think I'm leaning towards the names. It makes the map a little more cluttered, but not so much as to detract from the map.

Took me 7 seconds to find Aura. Not sure if that is acceptable or not and circumstances could be different if I was actually playing the map.

Mmmhm, indeed you can find things. I also think I'm leaning toward territory names (but for reasons no one can understand!) :)

onbekende...they are meant to look like stone figures.
If you have heard of a cameo....it is a piece of stone style jewellry worn by women.
Those images are developed from images on the web and stylized like that.

I would prefer to keep them like that, as it fits well with the roman theme.

onbekende, yes this cameo was also an answer for andy's odd figures.

in relation to daring me to find a better picture of cleopatra, one probably could find better 'bust' images, as we don't have a photo of her, and paintings apart from cartouches and roman murals might be artist's wonderful imagination of what she looked like unfortunately modelled on a venecian beauty of some style from the renaissance.

as ot the tert names, i prefer the named map myself and will proceed with that map, examining names to see if I can find smaller four letter vessel names that would fit more appropriately.

I have a busy weekend coming up, and will be away in Townsville for Monday and Tuesday next week, so it may be a while before i get back to this task. Apologies, but Pearl Harbor will be the palette this weekend.

Wow, this has changed a lot since I was last able to check in. Looks a lot better now with the changes you've made.

I'm not sure I like the names at the moment since they seem to be an odd jumble of Roman, Greek, and Egyptian gods and goddesses, Roman names, random places, and Roman victories and defeats, with the odd Sicilian and Carthaginian name thrown in without any consideration for order. Makes it hard to figure out which will be where since there are so many.

If you could somehow theme the names to the people they represent that might help. Very loosely, Roman stuff on Octavian's side, and the 'foreign' stuff on the other would be in keeping with the Actium theme. You might then be able to further group the names, so that all of Cleopatra's territories were Egyptian gods for example. Roman gods could form a seperate grouping, as could Greek gods (perhaps further split into the main, instantly recognisable gods, and minor deities). Famous names, perhaps, another, and possibly great victories another still, but you would probably find it pretty difficult to find short names for that one. Would possibly make it easier to find territories on the map though.

Also thought I'd mention that you've an Eos in both Lurius and Arruntius at the moment, and also a slight spelling error: Heiro ought to be Hiero. Not sure if it's intentional but you've also slipped Juno in twice, although the second is under the alternate spelling Iuno, and the same with Jupiter and Jove.

Yes indeed they are Gwalchmai!
I was aware of this, as this "first attempt" was only to determine if the forum would find them acceptable. Of course the forum has to agree that they will be used, and in that event, I am going to try to find 3, 4, and 5 letter names for each "owner".
The difficulty is do we put everything in latin, or the english version.
I would prefer the english version, otherwise the whole mpa needs to become latinised. It's kind of like "in for a penny in for a pound". :)

The part where it says in the Key "Large ships marked X can only bombard..." seems to be worded rather awkwardly. I can't really decipher any meaning from it. Can they only attack bordering ships? Or can G. Octavius attack M. Antonius?

Thanks for the post I GOT SERVED

Part 1
"large ships marked x can only bombard similarly marked bordering ships" means that M Antonius can only bombard G Octavius, he can NOT fully attack and take over G Ovtavius.
This is essence means in the xml there is a special feature for bombardment between M Antonius and G Octavius, but those two territories do not border each other in the xml.

Part 2.
" but may board and conquer bordering small ships"

This means that G Octavius has normal borders with
Mars
Juno
Zama
Sabius
Aita
Mus
and they can attack each other as per normal play.

Similarly, M Antonius has normal borders with
Tigris
Nun
Euia
Thera
Spes
and they can attack each other as per normal play.

Cleopatra is up for grabs by any one of her neighbours.

i dunno, the hexagons just dont seem to jive with the roman theme. also the hexagons remind me of the landgrab maps.

Ah mibi...you've appeared in my thread. :) Thank you for honouring me.

If you check on page 4 of this thread, there was a pre-map poll (probably when you weren't around) in which the people who voted indicated their favour (only marginally) to hexagons, which is why this is so.

I don't particularly care what is on landgrab, but I also think that this forum should not deny "hexagons" simply because they are on landgrab, and if the cartographer has the capacity to make something decent of the hexagons. I think I have achieved a comfortable result.

The size restrictions make that one easier for you. It will pretty much have to be English. Most of the names will be the same in either language anyway, but those that aren't will get longer in the Latin.

I think hexagon s are great from a gameplay stand point, i just wish there were more of a roman feel to it. There are elements in this map that remind me of your pearl harbor map. Maybe thats just your style tho.

I think i will stay out of this thread tho ;)

Mibi, there is no need for you to stay out of the thread. If you think there are elements that could be more roman, than please explain. Remember that everyone is not a designer as I am lead to beleive you are, so we don't always have the skills that you do. You are welcome at any time to make constructive suggestions to take this map to "another level". :)

At this stage, I am still favouring real names for the ships. Cleopatra's ships names will be:
Aken - Custodian of the Ferryboat in the Underworld
Ra - the Sun God
Horus - he who is above
Geb - Earth God
Isis - mother goddess
Maat - Goddess of Truth, Justice & Harmony

keep the real names, swicthing to short form, takes away from teh authenticity apeal of this map, i took at look at the short version, adn a feeling of disgust took hold, had to look back to the longer version.

so plz, keep the long version, plz!!!!!!!

just my 2 cents.
