was it really a copyright issue? before you had taken down the map it had been changed to just have the same layout with no mention of where the layout came from. it wasn't infringing on copyright anymore than the "classic shapes" map is. it was a really good map in the way it played, that is the only reason i ask, and i don't understand the copyright logic when Classic Shapes is doing the same thing.

If you are referring to the Middle Earth map that was before it's Shapes Replacement---it was indeed pulled down because of copyright issues.
The Shapes map that replaced the original Middle Earth map was REVAMPed to Midgard to provide a more aesthetically pleasing gaming experience.

i'd like to add a statement to the people getting mad at others for posting but "not seeing the thread"
i was once like you... but i then realized that these threads get merged into a huge one, so the people who are initially posting don't even realize that they're being moved. if they are posting in here like idiots though, tear 'em a new one

I honestly find it hard to get the feeling of being in the Middle Earth when playing the Midgard map. Definitely not the same.
Too bad they have all those copyrights issues –
I really would love to fight for those regions and their bonuses: Gondor/Rohan/Mordor/Arnor/Harad... and so on....
...or for high bonus places/cities like: Minas Tirith/Isengard/Helm’s Deep/Rivendell/Moria and a lot others...

We realize it's not the same, but it's the only option available.

Threre are actually 2 different versions of the LOTR maps, theres the original and then the "trilogy edition" I have the risk godstorm and it is a GREAT MAP, they also produced a risk starwars clonewars edition which isn't too bad. even the risk 2210 is decent. although bidding for turn order is WAY OVERPOWERED!! you can pick up risk for the pc very cheap and it has about 8 or 9 different maps on it (this is the old 1997 version that im talking about) I would like to see a crossover from the old GAMEMASTERS SERIES from broadsides and boarding parties. COULD BE COOL
thegrimsleeper wrote:cenamom wrote:I agree. I love the Lord of the rings Map, I also love the addition of mission cards etc. I'm just a risk addict.
Actually, mission cards have been packed with Risk games for as long as I've ever owned a version, which would be at least the last 10 years.
LOTR incorporates Ring cards, which control how long you have to play the game for, and also gives you extra reinforcements and the like. Personally, I think that since Wizards of the Coast got involved in the production of Risk variants, the "expansions" have taken a turn towards the Magic: The Gathering side of gaming, but that's more of a personal gripe than anything else.
Besides, if you don't like it, there's always Classic Risk, not to mention Conquer Club!!
But yeah, the Middle Earth map would be great. For that matter, has anyone seen the Godstorm map? Europe and the Mediterranean area...
Wicked.

Whitestazn: agreed, if they're actually posting this as an idea, they have an excuse. they didn't notice the thread here, so they made their own. Points for the idea, though not for creativity, at least they're trying to get involved, if i was that creative, i'd try to remember to search before suggesting, but i doubt i'd remember to. Makes sense.
My comments are directed toward the three or four "ooh! that's a good idea!" posts that come right after a "we can't do it, copyright..." post. No way are those from a diff thread that just got moved here.

Hi everyone, it is my first post here. I was thinking about a Lord of the Rings map:

The colored territories are "continents" (didn't think about the bonuses yet), the gray ones are just neutral. The small towers are strongholds: having two or more of the same color gives some extra armies. The Isengard stronghold can both count as a gray or as a black one.
What do you think? (it is the first time i use Gimp, so I already know it doesn't look that great :/)

well, there's only one problem: LOTR is copyrighted. CC already had to take down one such map. If i'm correct, it's now Midgard (don't hold me to that, i'm not sure what map they made it into; the new map has all the same terit connections, just diff graphics and names). There's a nice looong thread about it in the map ideas sub forum if you need any more information.

Yes, it was revamped into Midgard. ANYTHING copyrighted you have to get express consent from the copyright holder before CC can even consider hosting it.

I don't think the Lord of the Rings series is under copyright. JRR Tolken has been dead long enought that since content is public domain. What is copyright is a risk clone of the middle earth map which Hasbro have created.
I am not sure of the details but I bet that an alternative lord of the rings map can be created as long as it doesn't breach the copyright of the nasbro middle earh map. But you would probably have to get permission from lackattack himself for such an idea to be considered.

Wrong. Current US copyright holds IP in the hands of the original author's estate for 74 years or so after death. If and ONLY if copyright is not renewed during that time (which it has been excessively by the Saul Zaentz Company), will it fall to public domain. The rights and privileges for anything LotR is held by them.

Just the names. It is a geat map, but it isn't lord of the rings. I love it, though. It is better than the old one, bit I was never a huge fan of LOTR
