but h is still a good map, it will have 3 days to be improved upon if it advances too....
just remember that the map makers will be looking at what we're saying

Sounds like somebody is being outed!

Anyway, just because a map wins doesn't mean it's ready to be quenched. I think once we have a winner it will still be subject to constructive Foundry criticism - you know, like finding a way to make "Pernambuco" fit on the map (which none of the top three vote getters could do!) It could be a few weeks before we all deem the winner perfect and quenchable.
edbeard wrote:It seems like G and H are the top runners at this point. But, only a few hours have passed so that might not mean squat.
Yep... and every time I look at them I'm tempted to change my vote! They really are quite nice.
I have to say that G best captures the flavor of Brazil. The best thing about both H and F are the book concept and the background image, and the backgrounds could be employed just as well (or perhaps even better) on maps of different regions.

good timing by me our you
I just wish we had a chance to see everyone get a few days to respond to feedback. It could mean worlds of difference to some of these maps. At the very least it might separate the top 3 into a top 2.
Maybe next time.

My comments (& Guesses (Probably wrong))
Entry A:
Clean - simplistic nice - Like the lighting
Author - WCA
Entry B:
Good map - bit boring
Author - Gimil
Entry C:
Bit jarring on the eyes - looks like it might have been done in paint (impressive if it has)
Author - unsure.
Entry D:
Geographical map overlay - crisp text.
Author - RubenCassar
Entry F:
I love the originality of this - great "book" graphics. (perhaps a touch cramped - but can easily be addressed)
Author - DiM
Entry G:
Gorgeous looking map
Author - RJBeals
Entry H:
Again - the idea is great - I really like the descriptions - not as "book" like as F
Author - Oaktown
Entry I:
A good start - but a bit rushed and a bit cramped...
Author - Cairnswrk (Cos it's typical of an early draft from Cairns that *could* turn into a masterpiece)
Where did I vote - at the moment H -> But I'm wavering to F.

My vote goes to H, with a bullet. The sheer creativity and elegance of the layout and labeling puts it head and shoulders above the others. Replacing continent labels with little factoids that STILL label the continents is a master stroke. Sure, it needs some graphic work, but it's already well along, and it has the strongest overall concept of the lot.
Given that it's a textbook concept, I'd have to concur with yeti in seeing the hand of our esteemed oaktown behind this one.

Yeah - it's the "learning" thing - that made me think that!!!

I like D and G, but I voted for H, contingent on removing all the little facts, which for me just clutter the map. But all in all, there are several good choices!

Personally - I think those little facts make it.

Very good entries...
Some little comments:
A: Very dark, and all areas being the same colour is not helping it. Loved the legend.
B: Good one, no major problems beyond the flag colours contrasting too much to the dark general aspect.
C: This is really colourful, lol. A bit less colour and maybe other texture would be great
D: This is the one I liked the most. Simple, but beautiful. Loved it.
E: This is the best. Absolutely perfect! (Just kidding)
F: Really remembers Doodle Earth. Its a bit dark, too, but a very good entry.
G: I had not talked about this, because I didnt remember, but if this one win I think we will need to correct the angle, lol. Brazil shouldnt be inclined like that, unless its clear its on a book or something, like in revamp F. Other than that, and the fact its a floater map (like mine too, lol), its ok.
H: Good aproach to the book aspect. Looks good, although we will need to correct some of those side notes, lol.
I: The sat photo aproach could be better used. It looks confusing without a legend and with those red dots as routes.
So, there are at least 5 that would deserve my vote, but I voted D.

the facts actually make the map better, in my opinion

Is this getting much press outside of the Foundry? 52 votes is nice and all, but we need some serious voting power so we can avoid the "you never told us there was a revamp" flap.

I'm guessing that's widowaker's... he says he made one, and that map somehow looks the most finished; it's not wid's style to give us something half-ass.

I put the link on live chat last night but no one seemed to care. I have no idea if it was 'busy' or not but I'll post it there again in a minute. Maybe make a thread in general discussion since there's a lot of people posting over there. Worst that'll happen is it'll get locked!

I'm in a game of Brazil now, so I linked to this there. Not sure if anyone followed it.

Great entries. It's kind of a shame that only 1 will end up making it. Congrats to all of those who entered. Amazing talent we have in here. A couple of stand-outs, but overall - I think each of these maps could progress and be popular. I'll hold my tongue on who I think did what. I do not think DiM or Mibi entered though - kind of a shame. I'm almost sure I know oaktown, WM, Ruben and Kaplowitz maps. almost.. .but not certain. I hope we get more votes - but it looks like we have a clear winner so far.

And your own, I hope!
I mentioned this thread in a few more games of mine - maybe we'll get some more votes that way.

Well guys and girls, thanks for putting so much effort to offer us such good graphics!
It seems it will be between F G and H but there are 2 major concerns about these 3 maps.
The Brazil as an "island", where is the rest of south america ?
The old map effect for a map about actual Brazil, if it is about 19th century then vote for oaktown
[triple alliance map]!

what, no votes for B? Not even the mapmaker? It's a clean look - it deserves some love.

i mean, if the mapmaker thinks another map deserves the revamp quench more than his, he doesn't have to vote for his own right?
its like going into the school science fair on a project about how different liquids affect plant growth and voting for it over like.... computer simulated life generators or something ridiculous

no, you weren't the only one, nor were you the first!

edbeard wrote:Both F and H are doing the 'comes from a book' idea. I think F accomplishes this better. H just doesn't look like someone hand drew that. That's a pretty jarring contrast to the actual book it is placed. We printed this book on 1700s style paper but used photoshop to make it.
whitestazn88 wrote:dude... but h is the same exact stuff as oaks war of the triple alliance....
As it has been noted, there will be changes made to whatever map gets the final nod. Personally I'm surprised by the voting - H is far from that mapmaker's best work, in my humble opinion. Looks to me like he threw it together in about three hours using a flatbed scanner, a library book, and elements from his other maps.
