sorry for the break... here's one

A poor farmer went to the market to sell some peas and lentils. However, as he had only one sack and didn't want to mix peas and lentils, he poured in the peas first, tied the sack in the middle, and then filled the top portion of the sack with the lentils. At the market a rich innkeeper happened by with his own sack. He wanted to buy the peas, but he did not want the lentils.
Pouring the seed anywhere else but the sacks is considered soiling. Trading sacks is not allowed. The farmer can't cut a hole in his sack.
How would you transfer the peas to the innkeeper's sack, which he wants to keep, without soiling the produce?

Do the peas and lentils together completely fill the sacks or is there space left over?

Its never specified but by the answer I would assume that there was a little space left over

OK, clamp the second sack down the middle, put the lentils in one side, the peas in the other, tie off the peas and pour the lentils back into the original sack?

Hold the sac by the knot, and by the opening, thus creating a figure 8 only sideways.
Then shimmy down the lentils so that extra room is evident ie
0-8 where the peas are in the 0 and the lentils are in the bottom part of the 8, then clamp the middle of the 8, and open up the knot between the 0 and the 8 and proceed to pour out the peas into the rich innkeepers sac.

make a donut shape in the lentil sack so that the opening is pointed towards the knot. untie the knot while keeping the donut shape.

Pour the whole lot into the innkeepers sack with plenty of space to spare, then stand shaking the sack for a while. When items of variable size are shaken the bigger items will always migrate to the top and the smaller items underneath. Then just pour the lentils back into the farmer's sack...

(Probably not the correct answer but it would work just fine...)

I want to say I think I understand what you are saying but there is another way.... the bag doesn't necessarily already have a knot in it

Sorry I've been away all day, haven't been able to give a proper hint... doing that would mix the lentils and peas...

hint by the time the transfer one of the bags will be inside out.

I might have read it wrong, but could you not just untie the knot separating the lentils and peas, tip the bag upside down, pour the whole group into the other bag, then pour the peas back into the other bag, then trade bags with each other?

Hold the bag by the middle where the rope is. Take off the rope, but keeping your hand there separating the two. Tie a rope from the middle of the opening part of the bag (above the lentils so they are kept in a smaller section) to where your hand is, creating a compartment that is approximately 3/8ths of the bag. Release your hand so the peas are in the other 5/8ths of the bag, with a compartment that reaches the opening. Hold the bag upside down so the peas fall to one half, then tie a knot down the middle separating the two sections. Untie the knot that restrained the lentils to 3/8th of the bag. Open the half of the bag that contains the peas.

Or just give him both because you are generous.

This one I can't claim credit for - it's come from a friend on facebook. No idea if it's right but looks plausible.

Turn the innkeepers sack inside out and pour the lentils in. Tie it off then turn it right way out again and pour the peas in. Untie the inside out bit and let the lentils fall back into the farmers sack.
