However, pundits point out that Marquette's RPI ranking is #157.

Why doesn't New Mexico get a look in the RPI rankings when we are 4-2 ?? .... pardon my ignorance for being an apparent misinformed Australian

RPI, the Ratings Percentage Index, is calculated as follows:
"The RPI is calculated by adding three parts.
Part I (25% of the formula): Team winning percentage. For the 2005 season, the NCAA added a bonus/penalty system, where each home win or road loss get multiplied by 0.6 in the winning percentage calculation. A home loss or road win is multiplied by 1.4. Neutral games count as 1.0. More on the effect of these changes can be found here.
Part II (50%): Average opponents’ winning percentage. To calculate this, you must calculate each opponent’s winning percentage individually and average those figures. This is NOT calculated from the opponents’ combined record. Games involving the team for whom we are calculating the RPI are ignored.
Part III (25%): Average opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage: Basically taking all of the opponents’ Part II values and averaging them."
Thus, your record only contributes to 1/4 of your RPI, so weird things can happen. For example, Rice is 0-3, and has an RPI of 76... while Illinois is 3-0 with an RPI of 92. Your record matters, but not as much as you'd intuitively think!
I hereby feel like I've overanswered your question. By a lot.

ivy9, You'll be added to the reserves list. However, since magicc signed up before you, he will be taking over the Air Force squad.
With the length of this tourney, we're very likely to need you at some point though! We'll send you a PM

First tourney ever and I'm flying with my Yale Bulldogs now at 5-0! and leading late in the 4th quarter on the road vs. a tough UMBC team. Y'all better give some props to the Ivy League.

I'll bode for UMBC being a squad that should not be overlooked...that group cleaned me out quickly earlier this season.
Here's hoping NC State keeps winning...that should boost my #157 RPI...in the meantime I'll just keep posting the index on the locker room bulletin board. My guys are fired up to prove people (computers) wrong

UNLV carries on their winning ways with 6-round victory over San Francisco in
Game 6103451. This brings UNLV's record up to a top 20 worthy (?) 4-1. How can 0-1 Missouri be on there and not UNLV?

Missouri isn't in the top 20... they're up there in the RPI due to strength of schedule, but you can't confuse the RPI (my computer) with the voters (yellow)

Well, if it makes you guys feel better. The new top 20 rankings will be released later today. I will consider the RPI rankings but, trust me I won't let them overule your actual records. It will really help me more at the end of the season and in terms of tiebreaking certain things with top 20 poll.
