You don't even have any idea of what I listen to; how could you possibly judge me on that basis?
I can guarantee you that I listen to a FAR greater variety of music than you or the other kids in this thread...as far as genres are concerned.
Iz Man wrote:stinkycheese wrote:Ahhh but Floyd was led by Barrett at that time, totally different music. I always like arguing about this.
Ah, throwing down the gauntlet on a Pink Floyd debate?
I love it
Ah, Syd Barrett, R.I.P., Wish You Were Here......
I would concede to you that they produced a different sound with Syd, but I wouldn't stretch so far as to say it was
totally different. Waters, Wright, & Mason were there at the time, and they all contributed to what would be called the "psychedelic" sound. Which I would submit occurred prior to King Crimson's inception. Yeah, I'm getting technical, so what.
I do admit, if I had to pick an era of Floyd, it would be the post-Syd/pre-Roger leaving era. Incredible music.
I saw them on Oct 3rd 1987 in Syracuse on the Learning to Fly tour. UN-FREAKIN BELIEVABLE. Even without Roger Waters, they put on a show I'll remember until the day I die. The best show I've ever seen (I've seen a lot).
I also saw them in '96 in Syracuse (3rd row center BTW, thank you) on the Division Bell tour. Once again, awesome show.
One thing that sucks about getting older, all the good bands have gone away......

Ya, but you can't compare Barrett-Floyd to King Crimson. That is way different. So really they had no influence on Crimson, leading to the birth of progressive rock with In the Court of the Crimson King in '69...Floyd followed that with Atom Heart, Meddle, and DSOTM in '70, '71 and '73 or whatever. I guess you could support the notion that Saucerful was progressive...I don't agree.

Unfortunately I'm too young to have seen them. I see as many shows as possible though...problem is that I live in Northern Florida where there is absolutely 0 traffic when it comes to big names. So I don't get to see much really good stuff that often. I'll be at Bonnaroo in a week though, should be great.

Sex Pistols, Muse, Kaiser Chiefs, Queen, Scissor Sisters, Black Sabbath, Iggy & the Stooges, Joy Division, Alice Cooper, Buzzcocks, The Clash, Cream, The Cure, Dire Straits, Duran Duran, Eric Clapton, Flaming Lips, Franz Ferdinand, Graham Coxon, Green Day, The Jam, Jimi Hendrix, Kasabian, Morrissey, New Order, Nirvana, Paul Weller, Rainbow, Rolling Stones, Slade, Status Quo, The Stranglers, Suede, Talking Heads, Thin Lizzy, U2, Weird Al, The Who, and more that I either really like 1 or 2 songs of theirs or I like a bit but not enough for a list.
Sweet...Flaming Lips and Talking Heads.
I saw the Lips live like 2 months ago. And again in a week.

I listen to a mixture between johnnyrotten and stinkycheese with a bit of ska and other stuff mixed in. I'm pretty versatile, but I hate most popular music of the modern day.

The song A Tout Le Monde from the Youthanasia album is perhaps the most well-written, heart-felt ballad ever written, rivaling Dream On by Aerosmith. If I am in the mood for 'rage' music, then either Sweating Bullets or Reckoning Day.
On a side note, I heard that one can be psychologically profiled by the kinds of music one listens to. Anyone else hear about that?
In My Darkest Hour is an epic. Used to love em.
Corrected a few errors. And Yes, In My Darkest Hour is great. I got a playlist where it is followed by Going Under by Evanescence (a 'newer' fav). BTW, what made you give up on Megadeth?
Just kinda grew outa that phase of music. I started out listening to Megadeth and Iron Maiden, found my way into death metal, then I got turned on to some, relatively, mellower stuff (Korn, Tool, etc) and eventually ended up with my current musical tastes. Dont get me wrong, I could still jam out on whatever but the stuff thats in my queue now is just a bit mellower.
I see. I don't see myself mellowing out, unless P.O.D. and other 'christian' bands (like Third Day) is considered mellowing out. Haven't heard a lot of those bands, but, well, better than no music.
If I was going to meloow out it wouldnt be to christian "rock". Totally th eopposite. You ever listen to Deicide? Slayer? I used satan as a ahield vs the "colored" hole. Iactually took the tme to dissect the music I was listening to and use it as a weapon (+my tonyhawk twinkick smack u in the face).

I saw Roger Waters in Toronto this past September, and I can attest to the fact that that guy knows how to put on a show. Pink Floyd is probably my favourite band. Either them or Led Zep. Either one.

1. It doesn't matter. The fact that you made the statements you made, proves my point/message. And, well, the judging part, is mainly my sarcasm used to prove a point while showing disgust of you and your opinions simultaneously.

Why the argument on whose tastes are more eclectic? No one to my knowledge has posted anything that is more than 50 years old or that does not fall into some category of popular music.
Personally, I like *most* classic rock (no 80's hair bands) and classical, as well as some other random artists and songs spread throughout the century:
Beatles
Pink Floyd
Temptations
Eagles
Bob Dylan
CSN(&Y)
Gershwin
Chopin
Beethoven
Alice in Chains
Debussy
Elton John
Fleetwood Mac
Queen
Etc.

Aw c'mon. Saucerful of Secrets not progressive? We
definitely disagree there. Did you forget about another album that came out in '68? Post-Syd. Ummagumma ring a bell?

That album was my first taste of Floyd actually.
Progressive and psychedelic as the come,
and released
prior to King Crimson's Court.......
*throws gauntlet down on ground*
Oh, just a reminder. I love King Crimson (have several
albums).
If you're interested in the '70's prog rock era, I would check out Gentle Giant, Genesis ('69-'76 era), and of course Jethro Tull.
I have a brother who just received his PhD in Music Education/Performance. We've had lengthy discussions on the prog rock era. He was even able to actually take a full semester, doctorate level course devoted to the subject. Pretty cool. I'll have to give him a call and pick his brain some more....

That's awesome...the only reason I excluded Ummagumma is because I was tired of listing albums and half of it is just the live stuff they had been playing. Plus it was released the same year a few months after Crimson...according to wikipedia, I wasn't alive at the time to verify that lol. And I don't doubt that you love Crimson, I just think that they developed the sound more and I idolize Fripp more than Waters or Barrett.
I definitely have every Tull album ever released and everything by Ian Anderson; haven't checked out those others but I will. Genesis sounds really familiar.
I'm currently an undergrad music major...I'm not sure where or if I want to go to grad school. What school did your brother go to?

He got his Bachelors from Ithaca, Masters from New Mexico, and his doctorate from Colorado. He took a few years between New Mexico & Colorado teaching up in Steamboat Springs, CO. Now he currently teaches back at his Alma Mater Ithaca as a music Prof.
I cannot recommend the early Genesis years enough. I guarantee if you listen to Supper's Ready (22 min long) off of Foxtrot ('73) you'll be hooked for good.
After that, listen to the whole Lamb Lies Down On Broadway ('74, 2-Disc). The epitome of a concept album, many would say more so than The Wall.
