no.
jackale, the answer to you is no to.

I think it would be tough to get all the counties on the map....its possible, but it would probably look too cluttered.
Also, the misspelling is Alcone...should be Alcona
40Kguy....are you looking to put any state landmarks on the map? Such as the Tahquamenon Falls, Sleeping Bear Dunes, or Hartwick Pines Protected Forest? There are quite a few more too, but that would add a cool touch too.
edit: Also, I noticed you're using anchors to designate ports for coastal connections....Michigan is known for its many lighthouses and that too would be a great addition.
Just my thoughts (and yes, I am from the great state of Michigan and know a good amount of its history)

Oh, good. The above was just a draft I made in GIMP. You can pretty much scratch that as I'm redesigning it. I'm not even sure I want to use counties anymore, ha. I like the Lighthouses idea, and that would make a lot more sense. If you have any comments about the history, or anything you think I might need to know, I'd really appreciate all input. It's crazy how many people here are actually from Michigan.

Not at all! This is why we have threads for maps, too. If you ever have an idea, post away.

okay....lemme get back with you....what did you want to do as the basis if youre not happy with counties? Did you want to make the bonuses areas of site seeing places?
ie. Sleeping Bear Dunes stretches along the Lake Michigan coastline in the upper part of lower Michigan. Torch lake, an inland lake located near Traverse City, is another good size body of water. It is as blue as the ocean when flying over it. Unbelievable site if you've never seen it. I will also try to get a map of lighthouses on the coastline around the entire state. Hartwick Pines State park (apart of Huron National Forest) is nearly in the center of lower Michigan. It is known for its logging and has been protected for (if I remember right) over 100 years. I just found our about Mosquito Beach, in the UP. There are some Indian reservations in the state. Fishing in the Great Lakes is one of the states commodities. The Sault St. Marie shipping locks connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron. You could even mark Hell Michigan as a location on the map. It is one of the most popular cities looked up (to my knowledge).
Those are just a few thoughts to start.
Edit: in addition to Henry Ford Museum (Detroit Area), Frankenmuth and Bronners (Bronners is the year round christmas store) or Tony's Restaurant and Truck Stop (known for the mound of food you get when you order), Ambassador Bridge, Mackinac Bridge

I've been to Tony's; the amount of food you get there is ridiculous.
If you were going to keep counties, I think you kind of have to work Wayne in there. Detroit is in Wayne County, which pretty much makes it the most important of the tri-county area (with Oakland and Macomb included).
Lighthouses would definitely make sense. Isle Royale is above the UP. If you need more territories, you could add a freighter as a one too (additional sea routes, - in fact, could make two anchors, identifying ports, connecting say "Detroit" with "Sault Sainte Marie" or "Mackinaw City", and then have a few Lighthouses that specifically connect to freighters). Just a couple ideas.

I'm going to scrap this for now. I've been really bust as of late, but maybe if I get time over the summer I'll continue with it, who knows! Thanks for everyone's insight, but it's time for this one to move back!

rds, take a quick look at the recent debate in the Quad Cities map, and think how you would answer those critics if/when this map were to make it to the forge. What is special about Michigan, and how do you plan to make the map take the massive leap forward that it is going to need to get anywhere near the foundry standard?

That will teach me not to read the whole thread before commenting!

It would appear that development of this map has stalled. If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Foundry Moderators will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system,
after an update has been made.

on my recent hunting trip, I thought of this great idea for making this work.
Michigan needs to be unique from all the other maps already on the board. Also, even though Michigan is a state surrounded by water, Minnesota is the land of 1000 lakes, so an idea based around that should go elsewhere. But the one thing that I learned a lot about over the recent years, is how big Michigan was a logging state.
With that said, I think using geographical maps to show logging rivers, divide the state into regions and work with something like that. Also, there are logging monuments, historical forests, and I'm sure (I havent researched it yet) particular families involved. This may help us to build this map according to what Michigan's roots offer. In addition, light houses were big because of the trade and shipping routes. This could be implemented as well.
If this was to open back up, I would be willing to assist in the development of the map theory and history. Not sure if anyone is willing to work with me on this, but it would take a little time.

Land of 10,000 lakes... not 1,000.. big difference... in reality MN has 13,000+ lakes tho.
Yes I am from Minnesota

I think it's missing things. Having lived and loved Michigan for many years, I'm not really enticed as it is.
Boats are helpful, but more helpful would be autodeploys for things like Joe Louis Arena, UofM, Grand Haven, or other areas of vital Michigander interest.

The Grand River was huge staple for transporting lumber in Michigan.
