I'm not seeing any really viable alternatives for the ? here.

The ? is very clear and descriptive. It's a new player, nobody knows anything about him/her yet, we don't know about skill etc. so a question mark is appropriate. It stands out clearly from the other ranks, which is good because lots of new recruits deadbeat - thus it is good for players to spot them easily.

I wonder how many new recruits played a fooggy game and thought they owned the ? territories? Perhaps if they saw an option to play a random game, they felt those territories were random? By changing the new recruit symbol to something other than the ? symbol, we provide an opportunity to break any unforeseen confusion that the new recruit may have.

I truly doubt that any person would actually think that QH.

I've seen worse, comparable to people who don't know where to go to pick up their food when they order it at the drive up.

How much do we need to dumb down the site? We already have extensive manuals and documentations for navigating the site and playing the game. We have a training program for new players, the SoC. We have all kinds of features to help new players into the game.

Seriously, the players that are most likely to stay are the ones who have the patience to learn things on their own, the players who like to be challenged and don't want everything spoon-fed to them. CC should primarily cater for that group. We already do plenty to help the new players, if we start thinking "maybe they are not intelligent enough to understand what this means" when people aren't even complaining about the thing then CC is going to get watered down into the same bland mush 99% of the internet already is...

Queen, you should make a new poll. It's obvious that dog tags are the most popular of the new options, so it should be ? vs. dog tags. I'm so tired of seeing that piece of shit "?". It HURTS MY EYES.

I'm telling you..."dog tags" is FAR less of a "definitive" newbie rank than almost any of the others. Dog tags are worn by those on a battlefield...everyone...meaning they're likely somewhat experience and potentially HIGHLY experienced. It just doesn't seem logical at all to me that dog tags would be a symbol for a newbie on a war-strategy rank structure.

This is not a competition, it's a suggestion. If the suggestion gets approved and a competition is held to design a new NR icon it will be announced via official channels (announcements forum, front page, twitter etc.)

its not officially a competition until enough support has been gathered to change it. right now the icons above are really more ideas of what could be put instead.

Stop misleading people!

There is no official competition of any kind.

So far, this is a SUGGESTION on the SUGGESTIONS forum, and the suggestion hasn't been submitted let alone approved yet. When you present it as a "competition" you are misleading people into thinking that whoever wins this "competition" will no doubt get his design on the site. Which is not necessarily true since this SUGGESTION has not been approved yet.

I repeat: IF the suggestion gets approved, and IF the site admin decides to hold an open contest for the designing of the icon (and they may just as well contract whoever did the previous ones, instead) THEN the contest will be announced via the official channels, like announcements forum, front page, newsletter, twitter etc.

So please stop misleading people just to make your suggestion look more popular... it's not good conduct in a suggestions thread.
