OnlyAmbrose, very seriously wrote:And if you pretend to be an idiot online, how do you expect us to have respect for your "intellect", given that the only interaction that we will ever have with you is online?
Well this all depends on whether you think my list of people all act like 'idiots'. Perhaps you are somehow unable to appreciate the intellect it takes to be humorous? Maybe you can't fathom the skill it takes to succesfully create memes, or to rail succesfully against conventional accepted norms? Who knows, maybe you believe that the only human endeavour that requires skill and which can be perpetrated in text-form, is lengthy debate about topical issues? Are you really so blind as that Ambrose? I thought you were being nominated as a clever guy here, not champion of the 'Blinkered Arrogant Prigs Association'.
Put it this way, either you accept that doing things which aren't debating takes brainpower, and therefore the individual's relative skill at these activities can be used as evidence as to their intellect; or you're forced into insisting that debate is the only possible intellectual activity that it is possible to carry out on the internet, and as such the only thing that could possibly provide any clue as to the brainpower of forum-users.
To leave you with an example, is it impossible to garner any information about the intelligence of a stand-up comic from watching his act? If not, then why is the position different with regard to a university lecturer or presenting politician? Is the comedian acting like an 'idiot' when he performs, indeed is anybody who is not indulging in serious debate automatically being an 'idiot'?
Frankly Ambrose, you sound like you're mildly upset that I've dared to suggest that you might not be the smartest man in the whole wide CC Universe, and that there might be things on the internet that you're not so amazing at. Y'know, things like having a sense of humour, or being able to stop taking yourself extremely seriously for just one second. I'm terribly sorry that I think other people on here are more intelligent than you, it's just that I've never seen you do anything other than pontifiacte about Christianit and the Middle East, and quite frankly I get enough of that from people I know in the real world.
Obviously, please feel free to correct me if I'm not taking the internet seriously enough...

There's some good news and some bad news.....
The bad news is that I didn't read through the entire thread so I can't help you. The good news is that a monkey eats a banana opposite to the way we do.

Anywho, I'll bite.

No, I don't think it takes an amazing amount of intelligence to be funny. Wit, certainly, and I'm not saying that one is more important than the other, but wit is not what we're talking about in this thread. If we were to start a "funniest member in the clubhouse" thread, the results might be similar, but definitely not identical.

This is what I said and this is what I stand by:
You can't expect people to get nominated for an intelligence poll if they act stupid for the sole purpose of being funny.
Dancing Mustard wrote:To leave you with an example, is it impossible to garner any information about the intelligence of a stand-up comic from watching his act?
No, it's not possible to gauge how smart a stand-up comic is based on his act. That's why stand-up comics wouldn't win a poll on "smartest person in the world."
Dancing Mustard wrote:Frankly Ambrose, you sound like you're mildly upset that I've dared to suggest that you might not be the smartest man in the whole wide CC Universe
To be honest, I'd see it as an insult to this forum if a teenager won this poll.

I'm not offended at all, because I know for a fact that there are many people on these forums smarter than me, not the least of which are luns, vt, Mr. Nate, Stopper, etc etc.
As to the latter part of that quote, I apologize for getting into debates on said topics here, but really, the internet is the only place I can have such debates. Where else would anyone give a damn what a 17 year old thinks on such matters?

Just to put an end to all this... who really cares who is the smartest person in the clubhouse?
I know I don't. Posts on an online forum means absolutely nothing, so why judge someone on them? It's ridiculous, not to mention pointless.
...And now I forgot what my main point was going to be

Yahoo!Answers? Joking, but there are some pretty interesting groups in Myspace that you can join and discuss certain topics.
