I live in a German town where everybody eats the stuff, and I don't know how they do it...

Not very widespread at all!

Its a German tradition, and my mothers side of the family is German. Since she cooks the meals, I've never had a different meal on New Year's day. It's supposed to bring you luck in the new year.

my moms side is german as well, and we do some wacky traditions to (although no pork and saurkraut)

we say "guten apetit" before each dinner (really embarrasing sometiems when friends or relatives are over)

we used to do this REALLY weird thing where we did nice things for each other and then on a day a few days before christmas we would leave a shoe outside our door and it would be filled with candy in the morning.

on the 4 sundays before christmas we have really nice dinners (advent sundays, they are called)

and a couple more, those are the ones i remember off the top of my head.

Well, on New Years evening I got really stoned, so my dinner was two bowls of left-over alfredo pasta, a half-bag of dry Frosted MiniWheats, two vegan corndogs, and several handfuls of stocking-stuffer chocolates. In that order.

Traditionally, in my culture, New Year's dinner is ham and black-eyed peas.
