I know it doesn't directly help, but if you have Firefox, there is an extension called linkify that turns any highlighted text into a hyperlink. If you have Firefox, give it a look. I haven't had the chance to use it myself (I just downloaded it over the weekend) but it might be what you're looking for.
It'd still be a worthwhile addition to the site, I think. A low priority addition, but still worth adding.
