Neither the title of the post nor your question make any sense, mate.

Some random lady was arrested for calling a stuffed bear Mohammed, Islam's main prophet.

Ah! I see...

So why would anyone care if she did that? What makes that story interesting?

She was a teacher in a school in Sudan. She let her class name the bear. Apparently it broke their laws about blasphemy. To be fair, it is a harsh punishment for something not meant with any malicious intent, but she was perhaps a little naive in deciding to name the bear Muhammad in the first place.

Sure, Sudan's laws might be archaic and/or stupid. But if you go to a country, you abide by their laws, or face the punishment.

There may be extenuating circumstances, but seeing most of the bullshit tabloid headlines, I'll wait a few months before looking it up.

Indeed. The red tops have a field day when they can throw in the fact that 'muhammad is the most popular name for new born baby boys in Britain today.'

I believe this is right, the class voted on the bear to be called Mohammed. And that the most popular boy (maybe popular name...) was named Mohammed. :?

Yep. And in the UK the class could vote to call it 'Child Fucker Pedo King' but it would still be illegal here...

Not saying its a law that I especially agree with, but it is one that she broke. As a teacher she is responsible for what happens in her class.

I think what actually happened was that the boy won the competition to name the bear and named it after himself.

the thing that strikes me is that, for someone coming from a country which is part of a political correctness movement (a western nation essentially) to go to a nation where political correctness may not be such a contested issue, and still make such a silly cultural snafu, seems almost absurd to me.

An innocent mistake can still be considered a crime. As I've said before, it may seem barbaric (it certainly does to me) but she is living in another country and must abide by their laws. Whether or not you think it was a genuine 'insult' is by the by. She broke the law.

Well now that I know the situation, I must agree with Guis and Exile...

You are a teacher... You are there to teach the kids laws and education.

If you know that naming a bear Mohammed will get you arrested, what exactly are you teaching those kids? That you are an idiot?

So, is anyone aware of what sort of punishment she could face?

I thought it was very harsh to imprison here for such a menial "crime". On the other hand, it was silly on her part to let the bear be called Mohammed. We all know how zealous the Muslims are. Remember the time a British newspaper made cartoons about him and there was hell to pay?

Shes got 15 days in prison, I think... I think she may have had the choise of that, a fine or a flogging...

The punishment will be 40 lashings or a few months jail yet to be decided.

However the funny thing is it was the children who named the bear muhammad not the teacher. She innocently went along with the name that the children gave it not knowing that it was offensive nor direspectful.

Even worse, I believe that if it were a male in her position none of this would have happened.
