Blood donation

I have donated today for the first time in my life. My reason was curiosity not being humanitarian - i wanted to experience this and also want to know my blood group. I also got plenty of blackberry juice and a pizza for free afterwards. They took about 450 ml of blood from me. I did feel a bit lightheaded and heat swept over me for a momement because my blood pressure dropped to 80/60 (from 140/80). so i had to stay there for a while but i'm feeling good now and i'm pretty glad i did this.

Have you ever donated?

What do u lose and when it will be fully replenished:
1) blood volume (6-24 hours)
2) blood cells (around 2 weeks)
3) iron (about 3 months)

I've tried three times in the last year but I keep getting rejected / running out of time. Once for being in a malaria zone, once for having a runny nose, and then once because I had a calc test in 5 minutes. Trying again tomorrow, though.

ive never donated blood to be honest. im not against it in the slightest, just a weird human aspect of mine of sorts. Its mine and i want to keep it. Yes i know thats not the attitude as when i need it someone else was good enough to donate to me. I just feel bad in the sense that i could do more and im not.

i hate syringes so i wasn't too happy about it - that's probably the reason (plus unhealthy lifestyle) why my blood pressure was elevated before donation. but believe me, feeling that you did a good thing afterwards is worth it.

Tried to donate a couple of years ago, but they sent me a letter a few days after saying my donation was riddled with diseases.

Y'know, my heart was in the right place and all; but apparently I have to stop living in filth before I can follow through with my good intentions...

I'm kind of similar...I simply can't deal with the idea of my blood being sucked out, it just freaks me out.

ive done it once now, as soon as i could i did, its fine and i would have done it before if i could have but i wasnt old enough.

They suspected hemophilia but it were 2 or 3 different factors (i think XIII was among them). It all started when I went to the dentist to make me a retainer. She told me she needs to take my tooth so this retainer can fit better. She puled it off and the bleeding (from the hole where my tooth was) didn't stop for a whole day. So I did all this different blood tests (in 5 different hospitals) and the figured my blood is low on some coagulating factors. But after that incident (9 years ago) nothing happened to me but they told me that I can't donate my blood.

ive donated blood and plasma. Blood every so often, but i did it less recently because it turns out you can get paid to donate some plasma, which is rather handy to a person in my financial situation. The nicer thing about plasma from a health perspective, is that it takes care of itself in a couple of days, so poor students like me can buy booze and gas by selling off bodily fluids. Whereas doing something noble like providing fluids to save someones life takes quite a bit more time to replenish.

Things like that annoy me, they make appeals all over the country for people to donate blood, yet they're so picky, almost rude, in not accepting your blood. If you get a christams present you don't like, you keep it, and wait till after christmas the dispose of it, the same should be with blood donations.

He can't give it because there is a possibility he will bleed out, also if u have deficit in iron you can't be a donor (for your own sake) and if you're sick (carry blood transmitted disease like AIDS) you can't be a donor for recipient's sake. There's nothing wrong with the rules. If u don't have genetic disease, you aren't underweight and you're not an addict or promiscuous person (or homosexual) you are a possible donor.

You forgot that you mustn't be sick when you give the blood, people who receive it are usually in bad enough shape as it is, even a cold or something that would normally be harmless can become serious for them.

yeah at the plasma place which i frequent, they usually ask you to skip a donation if you arent feeling that well that particular day. They also monitor some other things like your protein levels before they let you donate.

that's natural. you can't give blood when sick for your own sake also. diseases i mentioned aren't apparent and you may not even be aware u have them, that's where the risk lies.

I'm confident that I could donate even with a runny nose and not experience any ill effects, I've had no problems whatsoever so far (fyi, I have never donated when I've had a cold). I'm usually done in 10 minutes (the record is about 7 minutes 50 seconds for a little over 500ml), have that lie-down of 15 or 20 minutes, have something to eat, get my bike and am out. The biggest risk is for the patients who get the blood.

Anyway, afaik here (Germany) they check your blood and values for anything that might possibly pose a risk the first time you donate. So if you have anything they'll get in touch with your family doctor and s/he'll tell you. After that it's up to you to make sure you don't donate when you've had unprotected buttsex while sharing a needle with some illegal prostitutes. Or if you have a cold or something. Or were in the UK when their cows went mad.

same here in Croatia - we got a lot of thing after you. i wondered why there was a question "have u been to UK between 1980-1995" (thought it had to do something with Norse :lol:

) but now i'm clear on that one

My hand after the donation. You can see the entry wound is hardly visible. It still hurts a bit if i lean real hard on it but that should pass in a few days.

I've tried donating before but they wont accept peoples blood who have had a tattoo in the previous 12 months, and for the past 4 years I've gotten atleast 1 tattoo a year. It kinda sucks because I would like to donate. Maybe one year ill go without getting one, then i can donate
