Each game affects your ranking just as it would. Tournaments do a few minor things differently:
1: there's a REASON you're playing that game now. to try and win the tournament, which can be just bragging rights, could be a prize (some tourneys offer a price of a premium membership-rarely, usually just the BIG ones)
2: It can focus your style of play. If you enter a league-type tournament (with a medium-to-large number of guaranteed games, rather than a bracket/elimination type tourney, in which you might only play a game or two), you'll generally have a number of games on the same maps, same fort rules, win conditions, etc. There are alos tournaments where much of that changes or is set at random.
3: Good way to meet people. Again, if you play 10 or 20 games against people, you start to get a feel for how they play, and you'll surely remember their name when you run across 'em again.
4: it may just be my perception, but there seems to be a *much* lower incidence of deadbeating in tourney. Part of that is the higher proportion of premiums, part is just that people who JUST found the site, sign up for 4 games, and never come back.... well, they haven't found the tournament forum yet. usually.
I play PRIMARILY tournament games... which is killing me right now, as I'm in a low spot of tournaments running. but I don't want to join a bunch of public games, since a few of the tournaments I've joined will have a LOT of games running once they get going. Ah well.

Thanks for replying to CrazyMike. Your answer was spot on. BTW, I noticed you live in the DFW Metroplex just like I do. I live in Watagua, how close is that to you?
