Are chance-only maps good for CC?

Post by mibi »

So there are some new maps working their way through the system which involve only chance, like a slot machine. You can win points if you are lucky, and only if you are lucky.

Do you think these maps are a good fit for Conquer Club. I think they could be really popular! Who wouldn't want to win free points?

Here is one of them,

here is another

Making one or two of these maps as a novelty might be fun. I can't imagine most people playing too many of these.

I didn't vote because there is no option between yes and no.

Eh... I really don't like the idea. I can see where some might, but it isn't much of a ranking system if your lucky.

I would have liked to see the option, "no, gfy!", unfortunately it wasn't on the list.

Agreed. I had to settle for just a plain "no" and hope others voted "gfy" for me.

I don't see why people don't want certain maps to be made. If you don't like it, don't play it.

Eh, for maps like these I can think you can make the argument that they skew the rating system. It shows nothing beyond luck (as that is the point of the map) but still nets points and games won. Nothing major, but the argument could be made...

Both the wheel of fortune and the slot machine map are absolutely ridiculous. Neither one should even come close to being allowed for live play on this site.

That's not the point. Both of those maps are specifically designed to circumvent the points system and to reward players for absolutely nothing but luck. They are a disgrace to the map-making community in my mind and should not even have been considered in the first place.

This site is not for players to start 100 games on a poorly designed map that will be over on the first turn of the game. Rewarding points for something as blatantly idiotic as that is the worst thing you can do.

I know you can make a better map than that mibi, so don't even go there.

While I absolutely agree, I also thought that Doodle Earth was absolutely ridiculous - now it's among the most played maps on the site.

If there's enough demand and support for such a project, it'll get through the foundry. If everybody who thinks these are bad ideas goes into the appropriate map threads and tells the maker why it is a bad idea, both will die early deaths.

People forget that there's still one step after the foundry: Lack veto. (If he even lets it get that far.) I think they would completely devalue the site. This game is called "Conquer"; last time I checked, no one who conquered anything did it on 1 turn.

Battle Royale's are all luck (at least initally), but no one whines about them...it's sort of the same principle. Risk a few points for a jackpot. BR's are worse for the points system than jokey gambles, imo.

Neither of these maps are working their way through the system, because I won't be moving them out of Map Ideas. Andy won't either, and if any other moderator does we will move them back.

These maps would destroy the entire point of the site and undo the meticulous work many people undertake to preserve the integrity of the ranking system.

The only reason I am not locking them is because I feel they have a right to discuss the idea, as flawed as it is.

very good point.
