i think a very bad mistake is to play with the heart not the mind. too often people seek revenge and simply go suicidal or they lose their temper because you break their bonus and do something stupid.

As a noob myself or someone that flirts with that title regularly at least here are a list of my crimes since I started. In the hope of getting a more lenient sentence I am pleading guilty on all counts.
(these are in no particular order)
attacking my partner in team games, I though that i had got over this but the little voice spoke to me again the other day (sorry yorkie)
not talking to my partner in team games (sorry Amanda)
not listening to my partner in team games even though they are making sense (sorry Ali)
pressing end attacks / end fortification without fully studying the map
Assuming forts are always unlimited and not double checking
Deploying on the wrong territories
(edit: just did it again while writing this
)
Attacking neutrals for no obvious reason or gain (i do this a lot
)
being continent obsessed in esc. games (i have coped on in this one
)
not watching the clock especially in speed games
linked to the above point wasting time writing my views on life in game chat in speed games
not taking simple 1 or 2 kills and going for the big kill always shock and awe style
agreeing to alliances that are detrimental to myself
running into blind allies instead of planning my deployments in advance
pressing auto attack despite the risks involved
not making sure i get a card when 1 is there for the taking
cashing too early in esc
playing maps like aom as if the bonuses make no difference
not forting the right territories to protect a continent (this happened me as recently as yesterday
)
thinking in the now instead of multipe moves from now (ala chess)
underestimating and overestimating my opponents because of their rank
trying to compete way outside my rank
assuming as I am very good at the board game this will be the exact same
entering games against unbeatable players like Amanda1
failing to get to know the maps I'm playing and their little idiosyncrasies.
going for continents with huge bonuses like asia in classic without realising these are almost impossible to hold
missing turns because im not watching my game order (new update should see this reduced)
OK I have learned from some of my mistakes I hope others can to.
PS having read this list can anyone explain why I'm not still a cook

Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.
Sorry if it has posted before
Trying to get a card desperately (especially during first turns when you have lot of territories with 3 armies) and attacking with all your 3-army-territories other 3-army-territories in hope that you'll get lucky.
And another sorry for bad explanation, hopefully somebody will get the point

completely hand over the game without realizing what they did or are about to do.
Accept or try to make an alliance before the 3rd round. Also resorting to an alliance after or just before they suicide on somebody.
Willing to wipe out their whole force chasing a single card on their first turn
Take things personally. I see a lot of new players attack you simply because you attacked them. Instead of attacking somebody else, which would usually give them more of an advantage.
Playing the role as a non factor. I see a lot of players (even in the 2000 point range) let the strongest player grow, while they attack another weak player, which usually creates an extremely lop sided game.
not reading chat before they take their turn. I've seen a few games where people take their turn, read the chat and then realize there is an alliance.
I would say the most common mistake is not taking a solid look at the map as if every color where their own. This would explain why a lot of foolish moves are done.
not using strategical troop placement or distractions. More times than not it is easy to figure out exactly what a player has planned and what his next move is going to be.
The most annoying thing would have to be having them protect a players bonus, while you or another player is in position, willing and waiting to break up that bonus, but can't because another player is in the way and doesn't acknowledge the fact that you're massing your troops up for a reason...
oh and completely taking themselves out of the game for a round if not more. When somebody attacks a spot on the map with their largest army, which is their real threat/powerhorse and in the process eliminates any type of attack route from this same army. I have had people do this to me many of times. It gives other players a free pass to make a risky attempt at a territory grab and gives them the green light to take a bonus with no real threat to break you up. More times than not this will usually flip the game around in favor of the other player.
if I didn't explain it good enough it would be like holding south america with 40 troops on brazil 10 on Venezuala and attacking north africa, not moving your troops forward, while another player is on the verge of grabbing Europe. In this case it's not so extreme, but when you do it with a bonus that has more borders to protect you can't just fortify your troops forward on the next turn.

new recruit errors
1. assuming that a two-player game MUST be "real time" (maybe not the very new folks, but non-premiums with some to moderate experience.
2. Join a game when they don't have the time to finish, including starting a game and then not tracking whether it started.
3. failing to read legends, especially on the "different" boards -- shoot, a lot of experienced folks blow this one!
4. along lines of 3, assuming strategy is same for all games.
5.not showing "manners". Quitting when the going gets tough; trying to take all the territory instead of ending the game quickly; starting rt and then just leaving - sometimes you cannot help it, but its always nice to notify the other person if you have to take off. .. or apologize when you come back. Starting out with inappropriate cursing, etc. Just like in real life, some folks think its all part of the fun, others are offended, discretion is appropriate.
6. blaming other people for failings (such as not reading legends, etc.) -- though some exp. folks do this, too.
7. Not reading the rules, etc. Of course those folks probably won't read your guide, either, but ...
8. 8 getting upset about or not understanding truces.
Oh, and in case this long list makes it seem I am anti-newbie ... I am not but, I think it is a good idea to write up some guidelines so those who truly WANT to learn better/quickly can... The "problem children" are going to disappear anyway.

Trying to take Asia on the Classic map (or the biggest continent on any other map) is a really bad move for beginners. Well, thats actually a really bad move for most people, but I see new guys attempt it the most, and it always fails.
You can't really prevent this, other than explaining it to everyone when they start, but it would be a good thing to add to the list.

Not playing the turns in team games.
i.e. trying to break an opponents bonus when a team mate who would get to go before that bonus could be cashed is in a better position to do the bonus break on their turn.
God! That doesn't read right but I think you will get my drift.
