the real problem with this, and its only a practical one... is that it defeats the purpose of the trial period to gain new players...
now obviously the percentage of players that miss all their turns, and then come back is probably pretty low, but this assures they will never be back.
I am a little biased here though...i have 80 games going, if someone deadbeats I dont realize it till they turn neutral...
its not a bad idea, but it does limit the potential for new players...at least to some degree

Jennifer has a point... if you set up a newbie acct and put one in your game you know it will deadbeat and you can plan your opening moves accordingly. But it seems like a lot of work to gain a minimal advantage and you risk getting busted.
The one problem I see is WHEN they go neutral...
Is it as soon as they click the link... at the end of the round... on their next turn...

It is an interesting idea indeed....
There wouldnt be an issue with people deadbeating for points (if you set opt-outs to lose no points)
Yes, there could be an issue with the position gain, but it's such a random drop, it would be only the first few games they could do this and they'd have to make so many new accounts for there to be a viable effect that someone would tip us off pretty fast and/or we'd catch them in our magical net really easily.
Fitz, you're right it would mean people might be less likely to come back - but the email could say something along the lines of "if you didn't like those settings, why don't you try another, we have lots of maps and lots of game types - but be more careful what you choose, you can only opt out so many times. If it's a speed thing, either hop into our live chat to set up a real time game or upgrade to premium to get speed games"
Or you could even provide a link to the training thread in the general forum to get them set up with some nice people.
In other words, you could use it to grab people who missed out on some of the lovely features we have here just because they missed them.
I like this idea.
A lot

From the point of view of getting new members, I wouldn't be surprised if there would be a reverse psychology effect associated with asking newbies if they want to opt out(i.e. asking them if they want to leave might actually make them more inclined to stay). People demonstrate that sort of behavior all the time
And as for when they turn neutral I would have thought as soon as possible in order to minimise the effect the deadbeat has on other players. Can anyone see any reason from a fairness/cheating point of view why it would be beneficial to wait until the round ends etc ?

Great idea!
If the deadbeat clicks the link, there has to be time between the click and the actual opt out. People need time to react. During a normal three-round deadbeat, a decent player should be able to see that coming, so they can move to counter it. With a link, it's a gamble if the deadbeat will still be there by your opponent's next turn. I think when the deadbeat clicks the link, then a message should pop-up in the Game log or Game Chat. Then the deadbeat is dropped either 24 hours after that message pops up, or at the beginning of the deadbeater's next turn - whichever comes first. That should help to minimize confusion and frustration.
It's just an idea. At the very least I'm against having the deadbeat opt-out immeadiately upon clicking the link, simply because the risk is ran that the opt-out occurs while someone else is in the middle of taking their turn, which is not something that should happen without warning.
Would the e-mail be sent when the newb misses his first turn? After his second missed turn? If it was the second missed turn then it really would not be worth it at all. Maybe it could be either after the first missed turn or after 36 continuous hours without any account activity from the player.

Re: Forfeit Games

Dear Xeno,
Please understand when I say that I dont mean to sound rude, or angry, but what in the world? We have posted everywhere about how to post suggestions and how you should check before you post a suggestion to see whether or not its been suggested before. Lack and Andy have made it really easy for people like yourself who have ideas to just click once or twice and see whether or not it has been suggested. I understand you are new, but patience is a virtue. Before you begin to gripe about how you have joined a game for the wrong reason, try to think about how abusive that would become. Try to imagine the money that would be lost if you could forfeit games, because only if you buy premium would you be allowed to play unlimited games, but seeing how your new, you only have 4 games to spend and seeing how you want to take advantage of free games, you would like to end every game that you see not worth fighting.
Please think next time you want to suggest something, and dont forget to check whether or not it has been suggested before.
Enjoy your stay.
Give him a break. It's his first post on the forum, and likely his first forray into the forum at all. I'm equally frustrated that he's beating a dead horse, but it's not his fault. Just tell him to check the to-do-list, and check form, so next time he doesn't make the mistake. Why drive him away - he seems intelligent and he might actually have an idea or suggestion to offer in the future. We might not hear it if he feels like the only people that are listening are too negative.
On a tangent, I think some of the major recurring suggestions (like surrender buttons, undo buttons, freestyle issues, and maybe bombardment problems) should be stickied so that anybody wishing to discuss them can do it immediately and in the proper context.

I don't like the idea at all...being a player of mostly no card games i feel that this might take away from the suspense...sure sometimes they go long and can get boring...but once someone drops the ball and makes one simple tiny mistake then POW the game can explode and turn in an instant! no need for this....you should play settings and if it turns out you don't like the way the game goes...well...don't play that setting again...much like me with freestyle ...I played it a few times...didn't like it...now i stay away from it, for the most part....please don't implement this...I think it would take away from a lot and just cause more trouble than it is worth.... just my .02$

i play almost all no cards, but the longest game i had prolly didnt even reach round 40. i admit, a lot of the times the game ends cuz i do something bold lol but i dont have a problem with long games simply because its never happened. my philosophy is that you will never win if you dont take a risk (pun intended so dont boo me)
