I like them, much better than home schooling I would assume.

depends on where you live, certain places private school is a must, places like where I live the public schools are argueably better than the private schools. Homeschooling is an interesting option, but it leaves people socialy inept, they often have no idea how to interact with people(seen it several time)

The experiences you gain other than education are extremely valuable, like social skills. That's why I like public schools.

I'd probably rather be homeschooled, I already messed up my social life there.

Where I live, the public school system is very good, about the same as the best private schools. Unfortunately, if you go to downtown in my city, the public schools are (place favorite profanity here). The only problem with the public schools where I am is that they are no longer very public with all of the $$$ fees involved :?

The government tends to do that, which is why I tend to favor them doing as little as possible.

They've done quite a bit of good stuff involving workers rights, road systems, and regulating businesses.

I wouldn't have traded it for the world... That was real life... In real life, as an adult, you will meet all types of people... Same with public school.

I don't disagree, but when it comes to stuff which involves creating a bureaucracy (such as the public school system) things get screwed up. The superintendent of some SoCal school districts get paid more than the governor. And you wonder why classrooms don't get the funding?

It's for this reason that I don't support public healthcare. If the government screws up funding for publics schools, why the HELL would we want to trust them with money for lifesaving?

The government screws around with the funding of schools and hospitals because the fact is they don't want to fund them at all. If they had their way, all health and education would be privately owned, (and they would have stocks in it too), they just cant get away with completely privatising all social services (yet)

In Australia, atleast, our PM is doing his goddamn hardest to privatise all the schools. It won't happen while he is in power, but he has set it up that the course will continue that way if not intervened. Ultimately by removing all public schools and hospitals and only having private ones, the gap between rich and poor, blue collar and white collar, will be so evident that there will be 2 classes of people on the planet.

I live just outside of Detroit. I wouldn't send my theoretical kids to Detroit public schools because they aren't physically safe. But as a teacher I have to say public schools. There is no data to support that private schools produce better test scores after you compensate for income, privilege etc. http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0510/p11s01-legn.html Your just throwing your money in a toilet. Your taxes already pay for public school so you might as well take advantage. Put the money you save into a college fund.

If you feel like your kid is gifted and capable of more than what your school is teaching him great. Put together a summer reading list and have your kid right a few reports. Take them to museums, plays, vacations and so on. Meanwhile rest assured that at public school your kid will be exposed to rich, poor, handicapped, black, white and purple...you know, just like real life.

I don't fully agree, museums and all that junk are boring, I'd rather actually learn a better way. Also with homeschooling couldn't you get a teacher that fits the kid, and knows how to teach the kid.

I hate public schools, and I hate public schoolboys even more. I mean, who wouldn't? Look at the picture! Abolish them all immediately. I long for the day Eton is turned into a School for the Disadvantaged, Needy and Otherwise-Tugging-On-Left-Wing-Heartstrings.

Public schools are good. They are underfunded a don't have all the equipment private schools have but they still teach the curriculum and in my opinion are better.

Being to both.. I like public schools better. The teachers actually care (at my school at least) what you get in a test.

Um Stopper, I think there talking about American public schools, or private schools to us. The ones that the Government fund.

I think the schools are great, I would prefer them over Grammar schools anyday, because the experiences that you get are invaluable, whilst at Grammar you only meet male people who have parents earning £80k+ and know the difference between a fish knife and a butter-spreading knife.

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

And state (/public/normal) schools are cool here. The govt doesn't give as much for the money they take as in other countries (mostly north of here) but it's not a bad attempt.
