Post by cairnswk »

Hi All, this is a topic that will hopefully be stickied at the top of this General Discussion group - statistics available for everyone to read if interested.

They will be updated each fortnight after today (1st update is only a week), although I will try to keep up a weekly tally.

After you've read them, don't forget to check out the links below to what is in development at:

The MAP FOUNDRY needs your opinion on the maps in development, so do drop in and check out the latest maps underway.

very good idea as long as it is updated constantly.

i'd like to suggest some improvements. so arrange it like this:

Code: Select all

map name.....games to date........last week.......difference.......games/day.....active
Classic........280400...............271900.............85..............461........4800

and sort them by number of active games. this will show the hotness of the maps.

PS: you spelled AoM wrong

perhaps if there is a loss in pages then you should put a negative number. for example: doodle earth is very high up even though It lost pages, not gained. If someone skims this they would take it to mean that doodle earth moved up. I would also suggest that you sort it by totall number of pages not the difference. Otherwise it just shows the biggest movers, not who is actually doing the best.

to realize what map is doing the best it's better to look at the active games count or the games/day count. arranging by total games played is not relevant because for example discworld has 69 pages of games while doodle earth has just 38. does this mean discworld is hotter than doodle? no it means it's just been available for a much longer period of time. if you look at the active games doodle has 4 pages while discworld has 1. that means doodle is far more hotter.

thanks dominationnation for your comment.
actually doodle earth was a positive mover. if you read the stats last week 17, this week 34, so it doubled positively in one week.

i'm not in favour of sorting by total number of pages since this is not the objective of this mot of stats.

the objective is simply to show which map moved the most since the last poll. it is easy for everyone to read that the classic is the biggest winner of total number of maps, since that's where this all began i believe. :)

DiM...i agree with your discussion...to a point.

I am taking these stats on the total number of pages generated because since we are moving them by fortnight, in that time i beleive some maps will have been played and moved from the active list to the inactive list, but for those inactive games they might not be included in the total number of games generated - meaning started. I prefer the global picture at the top. to better give an idea of what is what.

i do this already but it is only for the top 5 maps played per pages all time, and the 1st 5 made in the 1st 5's and top 5's and i updated this to the 1st 10 and top 10 played per pages on one of the last few pages in there and have been for weeks, but i do not have all the maps cause it would not fit the topic, so its neat to see all the maps, great job for doing this cairnswk.

also i was hoping someone could let me know the top 5 map makers, who created the most?

well that's a tricky question there because some maps are made by 2 people 1 for graphics 1 for xml. also other maps have been innitially made by somebody then somebody else came after a long time and redid the graphics (see the revamped maps)

so do you consider making a map a fully functional map done solely by a person? do you consider a revamp to be like a standalone map despite the fact only graphics were redone and the concept belongs to someone else?
do you put the xml guy as a map maker despite the fact he only did the xml? will you consider a revamp that it belongs to 2 people (the original artist and the revamper) or will you just take into consideration the revamper? there are many considerations here. that might lead to quite a headache.

for example rock solid did circus maximus and montreal. but then widowmakers came and redid the graphics for both. do you count rock solid for making to maps or do you count widowmakers? or perhaps you count both?

think about it and then go click on each map and you'll see the sigs of the map makers on each map. count them and make the top as you wish.

yes i guess this would be the most fair procedure.

also for the revamped maps i would include both the revamper and the original artist in the top.
and for the maps where the xml was done by another person i would include that person also.

for example in AoM i came up with the concept and did the graphics but i had no idea what a xml is and how it works so yeti_c kindly helped. you'll see this sort of collaboration in other maps too. it usually says something like:
graphics/artwork/concept: XXX
xml/logic: YYY

i would like to note that doodle earth seems to be the most successful map ever if it manages to continue it's current streak. it gains games faster than world 2.1 which is a first i believe.

of course in some way that's normal because it is a small map and games finish in 2-6 rounds most of the time plus it is very played on 1v1. but nevertheless i think this should be a firm slap on the cheek of those that kept saying doodle earth is a piece of crap.

on another note i can't help noticing how some maps are totally under appreciated (votk mongol and CCC) while other maps which are definitely inferior (imho) are played a lot (middle earth, europe, indochina)

I can't imagine it will continue its current streak, but it is doing extremely well so far! Of course classic will always be in first, but its funny that World 2.1 and Doodle Earth are the next two most played right now. They are completely opposite maps, but very unique so they probably each created a niche of dedicated players. Both were also vehemently rejected my many foundry members, saying the maps were useless or unnecessary, but I guess that's not the case!

World 2.1 has been out very a very long time and is still the second most played map. Usually when new maps are released they get a flurry of activity which quickly dies if people don't like them. I think this proves that the players of CC want more high-territory maps!
