I prefer the first one more. I think it would benefit from having the borders between countries thickened or something to make them more prominent

Germany Still In The Mix

Post by AndyDufresne »

Marvaddin wrote:Really, I think your map lacks some balance...

Russia, for example, includes 4 countries, but 3 are border countries, so 2 armies is a small bonus. Same with Scandinavia, 5 countries, but 4 in the borders and at least 7 countries to attack it, and for a bonus of 3 armies. Germany is a lost continent, because is the shorter route to any attack, and its almost impossible to hold. I see, the presence of Africa and Middle East helps to increase attack routes, but not as would be good.

I'd agree with your statement of Germany is a lost continent, though I would not say that is exactly a bad thing. I think with this map how it is, (though I whole heartedly agree on some of the value adjustments) would be a wonderful map full of excitement and battles galore. Obviously Germany would be the center for many battles; an obvious stomping ground for any army looking to conquer the world. It would not be held right away, like Africa or some of the others might, but this would help increase the conflict of the map. If no one wanted Germany there would be many more frantic skirmishes between foes looking to capture a continent. I think the way this Europe map is laid out, for the most part, is not just a regular risk map. It seems more like a "Frenzy Risk" map, if there is such a thing. A map that will guarantee battles and conflicts a plenty.

iceland should be part of scandiavia, I say that only because it is culturally and geographically more similar to scandinavia

well here's my thoughts, and before i go on please no one be offended.

well there is two ways to make a map, by coping the classic and knowing that there is balance to the map, or creating something new with what you have(in the way of geographical). and the only way for a new map to succeed is for beta testing. and you can do this at home or plead with lack to let you put it up and beta test it. because once you start to beta test this, this forum will be about 10-20 pages long with suggestions.

I like the Europe idea, but I think that all these areas have to many places to defend.

Yeah, there were way too many placees to defend, so I put in 3 mountain ranges... Can't be bothered to check if they're in the version I put up right now :P but trust me:

The xml file is done tomorrow. Let lack know you want this map up. Push him. Badger him. And we will have our beta test, my friends...

Oh yes...

We WILL HAVE our beta testing.

[LACK] is there any way to make a map accessible to just one or two people? So we can test it without unleashing it on the entire community? Or is that waaay more trouble than it's worth?

I've been having problems with the interaction between the xml file and small-format image. Resizing the image resized the number circles as well, which looks really bad when the numbers stay the same size. Was hoping to get it sorted out by now, but between searching for a new apartment and work, I haven't had any time. Hopefully it will be done this weekend. I want to see its completion more than anyone else, as I will finally have time for my girlfriend again

thegrimsleeper, seriously, I think the small version of your map is much smaller than it should be. Its difficult to read the map (without some effort, at least). And my screen resolution is 800 x 600. It will really disappear in higher resolutions (I know, its the reason for the big version), but even in 800 x 600 its difficult. How about enlarge it a bit? I think 80% of the big version are good dimensions.

This is the link, people, so say what do you think.

Well, I designed the map to be played on a high-resolution monitor, mainly because that's how I roll. :P

Seriously, though, the small version of the map is the same height that lack originally specified, under the pretense of not scrolling down to attack.

Do you guys think I need to resize the map itself, or could the problem be solved simply by making the names of the countries more legible?

... It's absolutely beautiful, Grim! Maybe it's my monitor, but I have a little problem making the details out in small-map mode. But for all that, congratulations on a job VERY well done!

nice map. I have some suggestions.

The mountains in northern italy is very har to make out behind the text. Does Austria border Italy or is there mountains between them?

Can you go from Spain to Morocco? There is no line there.

Keep up the good work :)
