State of Tournaments in 2025

Post by CBlake »

What's the demand like? I've hosted 4 tournaments and would like to host a 5th (haven't hosted since 2013) to get a new badge.

What settings do people usually play/what gets the most interest?

This is coming from someone who only just started making tournaments in 2025, but it seems to me that demand is high from a small group of tournament lovers who will join just about anything, but beyond that dedicated core overall demand is low due to small player base.

I think you could make anything you want, just have to be patient. Expect it to take up to a month just to get 16 players. Alternatively, you can better results if you put the work in and directly message players to advertise. It seems that many players don't actively monitor the tournament section but when you mass message it is still possible to get a large field (kingm's feudal epic and the poly championships for example have over 100 players from this method).

As an active tournament maker from both the hayday and now. You can get a decent field of players but as Prsimsaber said you need to put in more effort to get players into your tournament than you might have in the past. The more specific your settings the more difficult it can be to get players starting a team tournament for example is much more difficult. I think I started with just 16 players back in 2023 when I started back up but my latest tournament started with 80 players, though drop outs are unfortunately quite common :(

Generally, I'm more interested in joining a tournament if it isn't just a bracketed/round robin on a featured map. Something like the sports leagues (NCAA basketball, for example), or the Jamaica Assassin league, or basically anything that has a more interesting ruleset than what you could get in a simple autotourney.
