How much advance notice for holiday?

Post by saxitoxin »

Everyone knows you should provide two weeks notice before quitting a job.

However, what is polite and customary advance notice before taking vacation?

Four months if you want a vacation during the busy season.

During the off season a few weeks is okay.

There is no strict answer to this question… it depends on..
- your field
- your company
- your position in said company
- time of year (depending on company/job)
- written company policy
- how much you value your job
- your own ability to get notice for said vacation/time off
(What is the reason for time off.)
- your relationship with your boss
- other variables I’m not thinking about

… also it’s not always a 1-1 relationship…
Sometimes a one day notice is fine for just one or two days off… but several weeks is appropriate for a couple weeks or more.

If you don't live in a corporatist hellhole like the Occupied States then two months is more usual.

You think it’s based on being American and not on the type of job?

Two months is reasonable for a high level professional who is very well payed.

It’s excessive for most mid-level jobs given that any new employer would want you to start working ASAP.

It’s ridiculous and dumb for low-level retail jobs.

… but no… just say we are backward and it’s all wrong in the USA.

TIL saxitoxin is a low-level retail worker whereas I am a high-level professional
