Re: Russian peacekeeping forces enter Ukraine
The great soprano Anna Netrebko has just been fired by the Met Opera for refusing to make a public declaration of her support for the foreign policy of the United States government. This was not a requirement of all Met employees, only those of Russian ethnic origin.

At this rate, we should have internment camps opening by early April.
The rapidity with which the public can be switched on to wild eyed, frothing at the mouth revenge-bots is astonishing. This has got to be some huge undergrad psych experiment.

Meanwhile, the Russian government makes it punishable by up to 15 years in prison to publish any information about the Ukraine war (including calling it a war or an invasion) that deviates from the official position of the Russian government:

So in the west, you lose your job. In Russia, you get sent to rot in a Siberian gulag for 15 years. If the US had passed these kinds of laws in the last two years, several of us would be sitting in jail cells due to having different opinions from those espoused by Dr. Fauci on the proper way to deal with Covid.

Of course this misrepresents the law. It should also be noted that the BBC was pulled from the air in Russia only after the UK government first pulled Russian broadcasters from the UK.Doc_Brown wrote:Meanwhile, the Russian government makes it punishable by up to 15 years in prison to publish any information about the Ukraine war (including calling it a war or an invasion) that deviates from the official position of the Russian government:

I don't think it needs a defense. Well if that's your attitude then no doubt you're also pleased to see US sanctions on countries like North Korea and Iran cause crippling food and medicine shortages for tens of millions of regular people who bear no responsibility for their government's actions. And presumably you would also like to see the US and UK banned from all international sports competitions, banking systems and from exporting any consumer goods in response to their ongoing sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel.Dukasaur wrote:If you're going to punish an aggressor nation by boycotting its exports, that includes athletic and artistic exports.bigtoughralf wrote:The general point still stands that Russian athletes, sports teams, performers, cats etc. are all still being banned from doing their jobs on the basis of their nationality.

Re: Russian peacekeeping forces enter Ukraine
Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.
First) Ukraine gave up nukes in a deal with Russia that it's borders would remain inviolable. This is two incursions within 5 years which makes it unlikely that any other nation will ever give up on a nuclear arsenal. Pretty soon we are going to see many more countries seeking to stockpile their own nuclear arsenal.
Second) The Russian economy only survived the breakup of the Soviet Union because of support by Western nations and their capital. After that, the Russian economy tanked twice more and each time was rescued by Canadian taxpayers. I perceive that Western nations will be less forgiving this time around. China alone might be able to help support the Russians after this failed experiment, but that is still a significant departure from the previous world order.

Well, to be fair, we already crossed that bridge with Libya. In 2003 the U.S. gave security assurances to Libya it would not be attacked if it terminated its nuclear research program. Good points, DY. I think the two points are linked in an important way.DoomYoshi wrote:Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.

The nuclear "security blanket" is why North Korea will not give them up. Iran wants them for the survival, too, as I think that they see the situation.
If memory is correct, Gaddafi (Khaddafi) in Libya was considering the nuclear option and was talked out of such weapons. He was deposed not long after.
Honestly, I was not aware of the monetary assistance to Russia by Canada. Despite the problems caused by Pukin' Putin, I would not want the alternative of their nuclear arsenal falling into the hands of rogue leaders. I recall discussions about that very point when USSR and then the Russian Empire was breaking up and undergoing lots of change, in the 1990s, as I recall.
Further, the USA (with cooperation of other Western Powers, I am sure) took many of the nuclear weapons from the new nations not part of Russia now (such as Ukraine) and de-armed the nuclear weapons, in the 1990s, again based on my memory. Despite that, it is said that Russian still has some 6,000 nuclear warheads. MAD is still an important deterrent.

SO, NO surprise that Serbs would support the actions of the Russians. That "news" is NOT news.
It appears that saxi's memory of key events is similar to mine, at least as it concerns Libya.

Agreed. There are third and deeper lesson which probably will pass by unnoticed.DoomYoshi wrote:Despite the temporary unification caused by a common enemy, I foresee the world order being shaken up drastically by this invasion for a couple reasons.

The proper way to transition from communism to capitalism would have been to distribute shares in the state-owned enterprises to their employees and make every employed person a capitalist. Instead, the western nations participated in the pillaging of Russia, where people with close ties to the old regimes were 'sold' the enterprises at low prices using western loans. This led to the rise of a billionaire kleptocrat class in Russia while the lives of ordinary working people didn't change much. Instead of transitioning from communism to capitalism, Russia transitioned to something a lot more like a feudal system. It resulted in little real allegiance to the new system, and no real organic support for a free market or the rule of law.
Like it or not, the western nations paved the way for the rise of Putin or someone like him.

Unfortunatly Western And US propaganda will not do nothing good to Ukrainians because with all these not objective news give false hope to Ukrainians where they write news how rusians losing in all fronts . And Zelensky also arming civilians with some weapons and give hem instructions to make molotov coctails to attack armored vehicles . Right now all news from Russian side are blocked and you can only see Western propaganda. Western news glorify Ukrainian army action and civilians will be in trouble if stay in zone of conflict .
On first week Russian had restrain to not bombard civilians , but how war progress more and more its difficulty to not hit civilians. But these its same in all wars if you look Yugoslavia, Iraq,Libya, Afghanistan coalition forces kill so many civilians and yet these its not war crimes, so suddenly now when russian kill civilians its war crime .
( vietnam its special story ,estimated that US intentionally killed betwenne 4000 and 10000,,, from bombarding Nort Vietnam from 30000 to 65000,, from bombarding Cambodia between 30000 and 150000 for US military operation reports there was no established distinction between Soldier or civilian KIA, All individual killed in declared FREE FIRED ZONES were consider enemy killed in action by US forces. Many atrocities are covered up one of biggest massacre My lai where 347 civilian are murdered only 1 person are convicted get sentence 3,5 year in house arrest! what a justice for war crime)
( i know that US use a lot of Napalm and cluster bombs in vietnam,, but i just read that they also use 18.2 milion of galons of Agent orange WTF! )

Russia and many of the other countries in the former USSR were recipients of foreign aid from Canada. Honestly, that was a bit of hyperbole on my part since it was not the main reason the Russian economy survived. Rather, it was because of Western banks lending to the Russian government to get it through the tough times.jusplay4fun wrote:Honestly, I was not aware of the monetary assistance to Russia by Canada. This isn't actually true. There are many reports that Qaddafi and other officials wanted such a security blanket, but it was never promised by the US or UK. Instead, the agreement was for an end to sanctions. While not many documents are available, the only documents that are available indicated ending of sanctions, with no mention of security guarantee.saxitoxin wrote:Well, to be fair, we already crossed that bridge with Libya. In addition, there isn't carte blanche with a security agreement. The NATO war in Libya was requested by the UN after Libya was found guilty of breaking international law, as you can see in Resolution 1973 (2011).

It's also somewhat interesting that Putin has never publicly acknowledged having any children, yet it's 100% confirmed he has two daughters neither of who lives in Russia (one was born in russia, the other i think was Germany), both now live in the Netherlands. There are also unconfirmed reports he has a third daughter, and other unconfirmed reports he has a son (though this seems unlikely as he would probably acknowledge existence of a male child.)ConfederateSS wrote:------------------O.K...there is some mysterious stuff going down...You can't believe anything that officially goes with who is Putin....
