Thousands of National Guardsmen were forced to vacate congressional grounds on Thursday and are now taking their rest breaks outside and in nearby parking garages, after two weeks of sleepless nights protecting the nation’s capital in the wake of the violent Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol.

One unit, which had been resting in the Dirksen Senate Office building, was abruptly told to vacate the facility on Thursday, according to one Guardsman. The group was forced to rest in a nearby parking garage without internet reception, with just one electrical outlet, and one bathroom with two stalls for 5,000 troops, the person said.

“Yesterday dozens of senators and congressmen walked down our lines taking photos, shaking our hands and thanking us for our service. Within 24 hours, they had no further use for us and banished us to the corner of a parking garage. We feel incredibly betrayed,” the Guardsman said.

Guard leadership did not make the decision and are “doing their best to provide rest shelter for troops who are still on 12-hour shifts protecting the Capitol and congressional grounds,” the second Guardsman said.

The troops are particularly concerned about being packed in tight quarters with limited bathroom access during a pandemic. At least 100 Guardsmen have tested positive for Covid, according to two Guardsmen. Some are quarantining in hotels.

The General Counsel of the National Labor Relations Board is an independent officer who serves a fixed term and can only be dismissed by the president with cause before its expiration. Unlike cabinet secretaries, he does not serve at the pleasure of the president. No president in 70 years has requested an NLRB General Counsel resign and both Trump and Obama preserved their predecessor's appointments. The move is likely illegal and Robb will almost certainly sue the Biden regime, a lawsuit to be decided by Donald Trump's Supreme Court.

Regardless, Trump appointees will continue to hold a 3-2 voting majority on the NLRB.\

President Joe Biden fired Peter Robb, the Trump-appointed general counsel for the National Labor Relations Board, after Robb refused a request from the new administration to resign.

The White House notified Robb of his dismissal by letter—sent minutes after Biden was sworn in Wednesday—which specified he had until 5 p.m. to voluntarily resign or be fired, two people with knowledge of the correspondence said.

In a rebuke to the new chief executive, Robb said in a letter he wouldn’t voluntarily resign and that his removal would “permanently undermine” the work of the independent agency. A White House spokesperson Wednesday confirmed that Robb refused to resign and was fired. “I respectfully decline to resign from my Senate-confirmed four-year term appointment as General Counsel of the NLRB less than 10 months before the expiration of my term,” the labor board’s top lawyer wrote.

His term was slated to last until this coming November, but unions, including the Service Employees International Union and Communications Workers of America, had been urging Biden to break with precedent by forcing him out immediately.

Also on Wednesday, the Biden administration named Democratic NLRB member Lauren McFerran to head the board, taking over from member John Ring, the Republican chairman since 2018 who presided over major business-friendly decisions during the Trump administration.

McFerran, the NLRB’s sole Democrat, will still be outnumbered by Republicans, who hold a 3-1 majority on the five-member board. The fifth seat, reserved for a Democrat, is vacant.

Robb appears to be the first NLRB general counsel to be forced out in more than half a century. The move angered Republicans and business attorneys who said it threatened the agency’s independent status and betrayed Biden’s call for unity in his inaugural address.
