Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 33
VERSION 33
Changes
- minor movement of some borders
- large and small versions
- updated XML territory co-ordinates using Map Assist
I'm looking to finalise this map, any more comments?
Map Name: HOLYWARS 1250
Mapmaker:CHAMPOS
Number of Territories:44 - two start neutral, one being Jerusalem and the other the Ayybuid Caliphate (surrounding Jerusalem), leaving 42 to be allocated, all regions start with 3 troops. (The six territories in Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox are split randomly between players and allocated first in all player options (2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc). So in 2 player options a player is not disadvantaged - they either both start with a set each or neither player does) and in 3 player games no player can start with these sets. It also reduced the probability for 4,5,6 player games for any player owning one of these sets to start.)
Special Features:An historically accurate map, no territory gaps, simple gameplay....
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: Tried to be historically accurate, on the following basis: the kingdoms/empires at 1250AD (with the areas they ruled/controlled) and then categorised by the rulers religion. There were a number of kingdoms/empires/religions coming together at the same time in 1250AD...who will prevail?

Thanks. I believe the XML is being checked this week.
Happy with the map and XML. Just need the coordinates checking, as I could not open the checking tool on a mac
Looking forward to playing soon!

Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 33
the v33 xml does not work. in a 2-player game, there are 2 coded neutrals, 3 single-region start positions and 12 randomly-chosen regions for each player and 12 randomly-chosen neutral regions.. if the players start with the EE and OO bonuses, then player 1 receives 5 troops for 15 regions plus 2 troops for EE or OO and probably breaks player 2's bonus, so that player 2 receives only 4 troops for 14 regions plus no EE or OO bonus.
the start positions in v27 are fine and we can use an xml file based on those.
are u having any trouble with the maps admin menu on the beta site?

Thank for this.
Taking these points in turn:
1. Moving back to the starting troop allocation your suggest is fine (I have removed the previous position coding from the XML). Aside from the 2 starting neutrals the territories would be allocated randomly. For 2 player games only, Player 1 allocated OO Makuria and EO Serbia and Player 2 OO Begwena and EO Empire of Nicea. I cannot see from the XML guide how to code this for 2 player games only. I looked on 'Positions only for particular numbers of players: viewtopic.php?f=649&t=183876&start=15#p4015840 ', but could not work out how to code for 2 player games only. Could you direct me to where this is explained and I can code based on the example
2. I cannot see the 'maps admin menu' on the beta site. I did upload the maps required and XML to the {Official] Map XML Checks on the Beta site. I am unsure if this is the right place, as there has been no response. Please can you let me know where the 'maps admin menu' is and let me know what I need to do
Thank you for you hope with this, it is much appreciated.
Just keen to get this map finalised
Regards

I believe this is the way to code this for 2-player games only and the XML has been updated. As I understand: "We need just to code less positions than players. For games in which players are more than positions, those positions will be ignored." - i.e. this coding will apply to 2 player games only
<positions/>
<position>
<territory>Makuria</territory>
<territory>Begwena</territory>
</position>
<position>
<territory>Serbia</territory>
<territory>Empire of Nicaea</territory>

<territory>Empire of Nicaea</territory>

Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 34
the correct place to put map files for checking is below.
viewtopic.php?f=64&t=163962&start=50
no-one looks at threads on the beta site, as they're not meant to be read in the normal course of things. they're there simply to ensure that the site functions as expected when changes are made.
however, to save time, i've picked up the files that u've posted here. the version 34 xml is looking good so far, other than my having to remove a fair number of blank lines. if nothing untoward appears, then i'll load the files to the beta site myself.
in the meantime, u might like to compose a description of the map that is similar to the ones on the map tab. i suggest about fifty words.

Ian,
Thanks for this
The narrative you asked for:
1250AD, the age of invasion, conquest and crusades.
An historically accurate map at this turning point in history, showing the kingdoms/empires at the time (with the areas they ruled/controlled) and then categorised by the rulers religion.
HOLYWARS 1250AD: which kingdoms, empires and religions will prevail…

Both HitRed and I have tried to find the [ Official] XML Test and Map Inspect, and in my case beable to use on a Mac . When we tried to click on the link to these in the map tools it did not work
I will try to run through the code again line by line manually, but could not see the error when I tried this last week
Thanks fo your help, almost there

Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 34
I have a couple of minor design suggestions.
Pure black is always too harsh to use on something like this. You should change all black text on the map to a very dark brown. Trust me, it will make the whole thing come together much better as the black won't stand out as much.
Have you thought about using an old parchment (could do it like an overlay in the corner) for the legend instead of the fancy font? Then you could use something like coloured dots instead of coloured text, so that it's easier to read.

Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 34
Just played in Beta.
This is a hot-rod of a map.
Will become super popular in speed games.
Only one issue - visually and intrinsically I thought Rum could attack Jerusalem. Most players will also be confused. Straighten that out somehow and it's gold!
HitRed
Notes on the confusion: Just below Jerusalem to the lower right is a white line that looks like an angled boarder. So from Rum it looks like your attacking Jerusalem. Also, the Ayyubid troop circle is so far south of RUM players don't consider it.
Maybe make Jerusalem separate from Ayyubid? It wouldn't hurt gameplay and would greatly help players.

Re: HOLYWARS 1250 - VERSION 34
Third game Jerusalem more feedback
In the third game I went for Afica. Took it and moved into the Middle East. Hailiebot had a stack of 9 on (Ilkhanare) so I forted troops from Africa to...Jerusalem as it looked like that's where the defence should be. So the door to Africa (Ayyubid) was wide open. Against a human player I would have been gutted.
The game is very fun.
