Brexit is the question, Irish reunification is the answer.

As Italy plunges deeper into recession and EU economy teeters on brink of collapse, UK eagerly awaits cutting the ropes tying it to the sinking ship:

Italy's economy tipped into recession at the end of last year, according to latest figures.

In the final three months of 2018, the economy shrank by 0.2%, following a 0.1% decline in the third quarter, the Istat statistics office said.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the contraction was likely to continue into 2019.

Meanwhile, figures from the EU showed economic growth in the 19-country eurozone still languishing.

Growth in the euro area remained at 0.2% in the final quarter of 2018, the same as the previous quarter and in line with analysts' expectations.

In contrast to Italy, some other eurozone economies expanded more than expected, with France posting a growth rate of 0.3%.

Increasingly desperate to try and force the UK into staying, the EU is ramping up its bullying and blackmail by throwing support behind Spain's illegitimate claims to British territory:

The UK has objected to Gibraltar being described as a "colony" in European Union legislation allowing UK nationals to travel to the EU after Brexit.

In November, the European Commission offered visa-free travel for UK nationals coming to the EU for a short stay in the event of a no-deal Brexit on 29 March, as long as the UK offers the same in return.

At a meeting of EU ambassadors earlier, member states agreed their position on the proposed new law.

The European Council document says in a footnote: "Gibraltar is a colony of the British Crown.

Gibraltar was ceded to Great Britain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, but Spain has continued to press its claim for sovereignty - which is rejected by both the UK and the residents of Gibraltar itself.

Gibraltarians rejected by 99% to 1% the idea of the UK sharing sovereignty with Spain in a vote in 2002 and in a previous referendum in 1967.

We have seen Spanish-speaking governments attempt to prey on the UK in this manner before, and we all remember how that turned out the first time round.

The UN considers Gibraltar a colony as well.

Gibraltar does not meet any definition of the term 'colony'.

Since you apparently take the UN's word as final, I am glad to find out that we at least agree that Taiwan is part of China.

Leaving aside the fact the UN doesn't actually say that, am I to take it that you treat the UN's verdicts as final?

In which case I am glad to hear that you and I are in agreement: Taiwan is part of the nation state of China.

It is what the UN does. Gibraltar is classified as a Non-self governing territory, aka a colony. And yes, I agree Taiwan is part of China.

According to Google:'

'colony: a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country'

Gibraltar is a self-governing part of the UK.

I agree Taiwan is part of China.

Yay. Number of people in OT who I know have the correct view on this issue is now 2.

If I were to use wikipedia as a source:

The United Nations understanding of the positions of each party is set out in their 2016 report. The UN considers Gibraltar a Non-Self-Governing Territory.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disputed_status_of_Gibraltar

The United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories is a list of places that the United Nations General Assembly deems to be "non-self-governing" and subject to the decolonization process. Chapter XI of the United Nations Charter embodies a "Declaration on Non-Self-Governing Territories"...

...The United Nations Charter contains a Declaration Concerning Non-Self-Governing Territories.[1] In Chapter XI, of said charter, the ¨Declaration Regarding Non-Self-Governing Territories¨, specifically the Article 73 point ¨e¨ in the Charter, it states that all member States agree to report to the United Nations, annually, on the development of non-self-governing territories under their control. The initial List of Non-Self-Governing Territories was created by compiling lists of dependent territories submitted by the administering States themselves.

...The list draws its origins from the period of colonialism and the Charter's concept of non-self-governing territories. As an increasing number of formerly colonized countries became UN members, the General Assembly increasingly asserted its authority to place additional territories on the List and repeatedly declared that only the General Assembly had the authority to authorize a territory's being removed from the list upon attainment of any status other than full independence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_list_of_Non-Self-Governing_Territories#History

Even if it is self-governing in practice. The UN doesn't acknowledge it as such.

Gibraltar is a legitimate spoil of war, taken by the British in a fair fight and accepted by all powers signatory to the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713.

Pretending anything else is a ridiculous form of revisionism. Undermine the Treaty of Utrecht, and you undermine all European treaties for the last 300 years, including Lisbon. One of the key cornerstones of European civilization is respect for the rule of law.

The Eiffel Tower is tall, but the UN doesn't acknowledge it as such therefore it's not. I mean it is in practice, but it's not really.

It's not just that, it's about the people who actually live there too. They don't want to live under another country, and they have a right to say so. Spain has consistently ignored the views of Gibraltans on this, while the UK has respected the people of Gibraltar.

If the people who actually live in Gibraltar wanted to become part of Spain, I'd support it. They don't.

Welcome to europe, dukkie. Here everybody has claims on their neighbours. Every treaty is despised by one nation or another. Every country has historical reasons to undermine another. That's what you get when you're a continent ravaged by more than a thousand years of war.

Also, lets not forget that Gibraltar is a fiscal safe haven. The EU doesn't tolerate fiscal safe havens, unless they're member states. Spain especially is hit the most because of Gibraltar's policies.

Unsurprising given the Spanish government's reaction to the people of Catalonia electing a pro-independence government was to send in the storm troopers and beat women and children to a pulp in their stairwells of their council buildings.

Set that against France's permanent state of emergency/paramilitary crackdown and you have a pattern starting to form.

Just like 1941, the UK is the only free part of the continent. The EU is an oppressive monolith and the UK needs to vacate it immediately.

You phrased that backwards. It should read China is part of Taiwan. There is only one China and it's legitimate center of power is in Taiwan.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid - responsible for the UK's police and security services - has rubbished shrill claims by Remainer fearmongers that Brexit will cause the UK to descend into anarchy, lawlessness and riots:

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has said the UK would remain "one of the safest countries in the world" in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The EU has industrialised, demilitarized and in many cases dehumanized the nation's it controls. One nuke on a full European parliament would do the trick, yeah there'd be a lot of civilians killed but they'd mainly be Belgian, so nothing lost, in most cases their already dead.

Really The ram, that's massive overkill. Let's not and say we did and as a result put a permanent concrete cap over the building to prevent the radiation leakage that would have occurred from ground zero. We may need forces to keep the people who would have otherwise been contaminated from escaping before the concrete cap sealed the location forever.
