Re: Will CC someday just be turned off?
I think it will stabilize somewhere above 2000 players. Of which 1000+ will be premium. Should be enough to make it financially viable, no?

I guess we are lucky that wham does not rely on CC for income then.
CC is his baby, It is a long way from being euthanized while we still have a group of hardcore players and some blow ins, some who stay for a while and others who come and go.
If it is his baby, why doesnt he try to fix things?
He does. All the time there are little tweaks and fixes. Big projects he no longer has time for, but he tries to squeeze in little fixes all the time. His first year he actually did try to work on CC full time, and there were tons of changes then, but it didn't arrest the site's decline and at some point he obviously had to give it up and go get a real job.

Re: Will CC someday just be turned off?
We remember duk. We’ve all been here (on and off) awhile. We know lack got out when the gettin’ was good.
We know BW is a good dude.
We are also customers. We’ve grown with the Nets. We’ve learned to expect a certain product for our money. I know CC has always prided itself as a club house. That’s certainly part of the charm. But don’t expect me, as a customer, to ever keep my mouth shut because a service provider is “a good dude” or “is doing their best” or “is on food stamps”.
Bogus.
E.
Edit: And if things are so dire? Offer public shares or invite limited private investors to join, set up a Board of Directors, create a business plan... all of which has been spoken before (and more) and let’s make BW some bucks and create a “risk-inspired” game/community that is stellar.

Does he really care? Or is he just stubborn and doesn't want to admit he was wrong about anything?
1. New recruits are the lifeblood of CC, and yet he is too stubborn to flip a switch and start all NR with the user interface off.
2. 95% of CC wants a family friendly site but insists on allowing non friendly content, now in the street corner "his idea"
3. CC events that are actually enjoyable and draw a large amount of players instead of stupid events that draw a small amount of medal hunters.
4. Easiest thing in the world is to send out a monthly newsletter to all registered users. Doesnt even have to be ellaborate, just ....something.
So ya, I say he doesnt really give a shit, because if he did, he would actually try to do something to save it. And your "hardcore" players are still dropping out 1 by 1, It is not just newer players that are leaving, but players with years of experience and thousands of games.

There is wide support for this within the mod group. While Wham could choose to do something about it and hasn’t, he isn’t the only one that supports it.

Re: Will CC someday just be turned off?
I will be SO pissed if this stops. It is my only online problem and has been since '06.
I have no idea what it costs to host / run a site like this in dollars and person hours....any estimates from those more in the digital-know?
If he has a real job and most of the work is performed by volunteers and it cash flows positively, there is no reason to ever shut it down. Even with a nominal positive cash flow he can generate a tax basis loss which benefits him (this I DO know about), especially if its set up on a tax basis of an S corp or similar. And if all that is true, it as a going concern has a marketable sale value of 10 to 100 plus grand based on historical average (assumed) net profit on a cash flow basis....who cares if he's a troglodyte? Brian only took grief being an active owner from most of the noisy pilgrims here....lol
Interesting thread. Needed it since OT is painfully politically centric
DO NOT KILL CC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no way the site doesn't run at a profit. Servers are not expensive and it's evident we're not running on high quality ones. It could even be a shared server which costs an irrelevant amount it's so small. If the servers for CC cost more than £50/month I'd be shocked. The only thing to consider is how much KA gets paid and how many hours bW puts into the site himself.

Re: Will CC someday just be turned off?
hosting probably costs a little more, but not much more.

Yeah it could do. I'm going off what I know for costs in the UK so I expect it would be slightly different.

I don't know where you're getting your numbers. I looked into this about five years ago because I was curious and got an estimate of $700/month. I'm not going to waste that much time again, but just a very quick Google of "how much for a co-locational server" yields an answer of something between $200 and $700.

That's just for the space and the monitoring, not counting the actual cost of the hardware.

I get my numbers from the profession I work in 5 days a week selling website design and hosting. We handle much more intensive and demanding sites than CC has ever been. If you pay that much you’re getting ripped off and have no idea on how to negotiate a deal.

Theoretically anything is possible if wham was willing. A precious site I’m on that exact scenario happened. Owner abandoned site, community formed for a business partnership and pooled money (to buy shares / raise the money necessary) to purchase the site.
Pro and cons to this approach, but it’s possible.

Last time I owned a website was 1997, so I'm not paying anything.
I'm just reporting what I found when I went and looked at quotes out of curiosity.
This time I just went and posted the first article I came across on a quick google, but last time this subject was discussed in the forums (maybe five years ago) I spent a bit more time and did a bit more thorough investigation and that's what I found. Bruceswar, who does work in the industry and knows quite a bit more about it than I do, said something similar.
Maybe you're underestimating how big and complex CC really is.

Bruceswar was a sports journalist last I was aware so unless he took a different career path I'm not sure what you're talking about.
I never stated you personally, but was using the term objectively which I would expect you to understand.
You literally drive a fucking snow plough or some shit for a living. I work for a web development company. Maybe I'm fully aware of the kind of requirements CC would require from a server and maybe I've even had a conversation specifically about it with one of the directors of the company I work for. Maybe you should learn when to shut the hell up and realise you're not as well informed as someone else on a particular topic for the first time since you joined this website.
Learn to know when you're out of your depth and when to shut up.
