Foreword

Welcome to the 11th Year of thrilling Clan action! =D> We apologize for going back to the 2016 version of the newsletter, if you haven't heard the plague is slowly making its way 'round the Clan Directors office. It seems all of us have been under the weather the past few weeks, so you might see a few things running a little later then usual until we are all back above board and healthy again. Thanks for your patience!

Last years forward was deep and thoughtful and intense, this year I'll keep it light and fluffy. In 2018 - we hope you have some fun!

2017 Year in Review by IcePack

In 2017 we focused on celebrating 10 Years of Clans on Conquer Club! We tried to do this in several ways, we held some really fun mini wars using old school maps and settings, we held a live raffle for every player in clans who participated, we redid clan logos to make them look medieval - and designed a wholly new game for clans called "Clan Realms at War: the Bannermen" to keep things fresh and interesting! We held random contests like "the Most Interesting Clan in the World", we read stories from clan members from different memories over the past 10 years, and we tried (and unfortunately failed) to bring you some throwback clan wars to see some of the old gang - but it wasn't a total failure as we have had a few people come back to enjoy clans once again!

We've seen the return of the Imperial Dragoons, the departure of Lindax and Catchersmitt14 from the clan team, a resurgence of Spanked and Milked, our first promotions and demotions of the new Clan League, OSA's continued dominance in the Random League, and also winning their first Mini Cup. We added davekettering and groovysmurf as Directors this past year, we saw the Fallen win the first ever Clan Poly Challenge, and TOP dominate the F400.

74 (+10) Clan wars started, and 71 (+13) Clan Wars completed. The Clan World went from 25 Ranked Clans, to 29 (+4). We finished with 810 (-8) players spread throughout 30 (+1) Clans. We had our first Claniversity graduates, and the unfortunate closing of the program. We listened to your suggestions, and were able to add how many active games players were in on the Clan Tab (thanks to codierose for the suggestion!) instead of just completed games. We expanded trench in official competitions. We removed some of the excessive penalties in the league. We focused on fun.

And finally, we never settled. Our goal was to dedicate 2017 to those of you who participated, who get involved, who volunteered, to those who make clans special. We wanted to push ourselves, and create a more enjoyable clan atmosphere that you could enjoy with your clan mates, your friends, and comrades. We hope you enjoyed yourself.

Whats Next: 2018 by IcePack

You might have noticed that the Platoon Report tagline has changed from "Celebrating 10 Years of Clan Life" to "Exploring New Realms". What does this mean? Yes, its a reference to CR@W Homeworld, however thats not all that it is. We believe that in order to grow Clans, we can't be complacent. We can't ONLY be about the Conquerors Cup, the Clan League, Random League, set it on cruise control and things will get better. We believe if we did that even though we all love clans - things would become stale. Stagnant. Perhaps even, boring.

More than ever before, activity seems centered around Clan Events and Contests. Therefore we want to bring new, exciting things to clans. We want you to be involved, and help us! This year while the "usual" suspects (CC8, CL9, RL8, etc) are ongoing, we want to bring you fun, fresh, new things as well. If you aren't seeing the type of events that interest you, PLEASE speak up with some ideas, volunteer to run something, or just contact us to chat about what you'd like to see!

The Clan Dept will be challenging all Clans to a battle in the CD's vs the World Event! We also are running the CR@W Homeworld event, which has been expanded by BigWham to utilize the site for map functionality on our newly created hex board! Later this year we will also be bringing a very interesting, totally unique event - brought to you by groovysmurf - that I think will be a lot of fun! And lastly, we are potentially looking at tackling an idea suggested by benga for a WWI or WWII themed event!

While all of that is happening, davekettering and I will also be working towards a few more Clan Tab updates and ideas. As always, if you have any ideas for future events or Clan area updates, please feel free to contact me. It might take awhile, but we will work towards implementing what we can!

Conqueror's Cup VII by Keefie

We're just over halfway into the CC7 final between Spanked & Milked and the Fallen and it looks like being very competitive. S&M will be taking a 17-14 lead into the second set, which began earlier in the week. Four set 2 games have already completed and the honours were shared. So, the Fallen are only three games behind with 26 still to be counted, giving them every chance to overhaul S&M's lead.

Mini War Cup 4 by Keefie

One Step Ahead have already qualified for the final, courtesy of winning the main draw. They await the winner of the losers bracket, the final of which is currently being contested by S&M and FOED, with S&M currently leading 6-3 in this best of 11 challenge.

Conqueror's Cup VIII by Keefie

January brings with it the start of the 8th Conqueror's Cup. There are three first round matches getting underway, HH vs RET, SOH vs MM & ID vs RA. It's great to see CC's oldest clan, The Imperial Dragoons, getting back into action after a long period of inactivity.
Full details of the Cup can be seen in the main CC8 forum thread.
Image
Clan League 9 by Keefie

Premier Division

There are still a number of matches from early rounds that have not been decided, nonetheless the table makes for very interesting reading. Currently top of the pile are FOED, with TOFU and S&M one point behind with a game in hand. Just behind them comes TOP. OSA could be ones to watch as they're still unbeaten after 6 decided games. If they win their games in hand they would climb right into the mix.

Image

Second Division

Two clans, Spelunkers of Hell and Atlantis are starting to open a gap on the rest. SOH currently have the lead but ATL have a game in hand, which if won would put the top of the pile. Phoenix are currently third and shouldn't be written off just yet, if they finish strongly as they did last year they could also be pushing for the title.

Image

Random League 8 by Keefie
Random League 8 is tentatively scheduled for March, but further announcements will be made closer to that time.

Interrogation Room

Our interrogation target this month is the newbie [player]groovysmurf[/player]! While new, she has dived in head first taking on a significant workload, most notably filling in for IcePack during CR@W the Bannermen so he could develop the 2nd Edition! But she's also taken on a role issuing medals, helping out with the Platoon Report, and much more. Get to know her a little better as she answers your questions, and a few others.
Q1: What kind of work do you do in the “real world”?
I’m attempting to write my first novel, but I went to school for Accounting.

Q2: What are some of your hobbies/things you enjoy?
I love to learn new things and visit new places. Traveling is one of my favorite things in the world. I love nature and long to explore more of the great natural wonders of the world. My number one destination in the US is Yellowstone and in the world, Santorini Island in Greece.

Q3: What games do you enjoy playing outside of CC?
Scrabble is by far my favorite game in the world. I love board games; especially Payday, Risk (of course) and Scattergories. I enjoy pretty much any card game, with Pinochle and Spades being at the top of my list. I also love logic problems, kakuro and nonograms or hanjie.

Q4: Do you enjoy sports? If so, which ones and do you have any favorite teams?
For playing, I enjoy volleyball, tennis and swimming the most. Basketball is right up there, but I've never been aggressive enough and always end up getting hurt when playing one-on-one. For watching, I like ice skating, gymnastics and diving best.

Q5: What do you think your free throw shooting percentage would be if you went out and took 100 shots right now? What about from behind the arc?
85% from anywhere I wanted...10% from behind the arc.

Q6: Who’s going to win the Superbowl this year?
The advertisers.

Q7: What is your drink of choice (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)?
Diet Cherry Pepsi

Q8: What is your favorite food? What about dessert?
My fajitas and pot roast, slow cooked. I love lasagna, too, but still haven't figured out how to make it properly. Carrot cake is my favorite dessert.

Q9: What are some of your favorite movies, TV shows, books and magazines?
Movies: Moulin Rouge, 13 Going on 30, Hunger Games series, Die Hard series, 8 Crazy Nights, Zoolander, Disney
Tv shows: Jeopardy, Supernatural, The 100, Shameless, Big Bang Theory, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Lost, Heroes, My So-Called LIfe
Books: Anything by Dean Koontz and more recently the Hunger Games trilogy and the Life as we Knew It trilogy. I also really enjoy classics like “Great Expectations”.
Magazines: National Geographic

Q10: Do you enjoy cartoons? What is your favorite cartoon now? What was it growing up?
I hate most newer animation, but everything else I generally like. I loved Ducktales, Rescue Rangers, Smurfs, Scooby Doo, ShirtTales, Rugrats and Sitting Ducks

Q11: What is your favorite Disney movie?
Lilo and Stitch with Brother Bear, Ratatouille, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid coming up right behind.

Q12: What style(s) of music do you enjoy? What are some of your favorite bands and songs?
I enjoy many different genres, but generally prefer rock. My favorite bands/artists are Metallica, Aerosmith, Save Ferris, Led Zeppelin, 30 Seconds to Mars, Ben Folds Five, John Lennon, Michael Bublé and Kelly Clarkson. Other than songs by those artists, some of my favorites are “Silent Lucidity” by Queensryche, “I Remember Everything” by Five Finger Death Punch, “Hate Me” by Blue October, “When You Come Back to Me Again” by Garth Brooks, “Goodbye to You” by Michelle Branch, “I Don’t Know You Anymore” by Savage Garden, “Long Day” by Matchbox 20, “Adam’s Song” by Blink 182, “Angels” by Robbie Williams, “Make it Stop” by Rise Against, “Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy and like a million more.
My favorite songs to sing a cappella are “On My Own” from Les Misérables, “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, “Add it Up” by the Violent Femmes and “Patience” by Guns N Roses.

Q13: What was the last concert you attended?
I got to see Metallica front row on January 1st, 2000. That was an awesome show. The last concert, though, was Ringo Starr and his All-Star Band.

Q14: How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
I always loved the Smurfs and my sister always said I was a "groovy" smurf since I was a kid. So, when I made my first e-mail address, it just seemed natural. Been going by that online ever since.

Q15: If you had to change your name on-site, what would your new one be?
Crystal Dawn

Q16: What do you feel has been your single biggest accomplishment on CC to date?
I was really proud when I won my first tournament.

Q17: Is there something you can do better than anyone else in the clan world?
Freak out about punctuation and spelling errors.

Q18: Who is your favorite person to play with on CC?
thea_cmt

Q19: If you could remove a map off CC, which would you pick and why?
Doodle Earth because it requires no logic at all.

Q20: If you could only keep 5 maps on CC, which would pick and why?
Classic cause I’ll never get sick of the original; City Mogul cause the board’s symmetry makes me happy; Labyrinth and Baseball cause I love them both with trench and Supermax cause it’s fun.

Q21: If you could reign supreme over the site, what would you change?
I would try and encourage people to be nicer to one another. You never really know someone else’s situation, especially a stranger, and you don’t know how calling them a name or belittling them may affect their mind and life.

Q22: What are some of your goals for Clans in 2018?
I’d love more people to get involved in clans. It opens up a whole new dimension to the site and I think a lot of people are really missing out on that by not joining. I would also like to see more new clans and smaller, more close knit clans. Some of the member numbers have just gotten insane.

Q23: How much time a week do you put into clan work? CC?
More than most would believe.

Q24: Does being a clan director volunteer feel overwhelming at times? What is the best part of being a CD?
Sometimes. People tend to hold you to a higher standard when you hold any sort “power” and that can be daunting. The best part for me personally is feeling useful and helping out wherever I can.

Q25: If you could challenge another member of the Clan Director team to a fist fight, who would you pick and why?
Extreme Ways...I long to slap him.

Q26: If you could choose one clan to fight, which would you pick and why?
Dragon Lazorz Pew Pew because their misspelling of lasers makes me want to destroy them, plus I’m guessing they’d be pretty fun.

Q27: What is something about yourself that most in the clan world probably don’t know?
I only first joined a clan last December.

Q28: Have you ever won a carnival game? Which one? If yes, did you get a giant teddy bear? If yes, what did you do with it?
Yes...well, my best friend and I left it on someone's car in the middle of the night...along with bologna, hot cheese from the convenience store, rotten eggs and a little American flag. Our gifts to my friend's boyfriend for getting married to someone else secretly while they were dating.

Q29: Do you have a “list” with your significant other and if so, who’s at the top?
Michael Bublé and Misha Collins

Q30: In your life do you think you’ve more often been dumped or been the one doing the dumping?
Unfortunately, doing.

Q31: If you could choose one superpower, which would you want?
Invisibility

Q32: Who is your favorite person from the history of SNL? Your favorite bit?
Adam Sandler. My favorite bit, though, was Michael Myers sharing drawings from the bathtub as Simon.

Q33: If you were to go for a doctorate or professional degree, what would you study and why?
Many subjects interest me quite a bit, but I think psychology and/or literature would be at the top of my list.

Q34: If you were in jail, what crime do you suppose it would be for?
Harboring a fugitive.

Q35: If you could live one day over again, which would it be? Did you choose that day because it was awesome or because you want to redo/undo something?
There are two that immediately come to mind, but I will go with the awesome one. In high school I “discovered” the Beatles and really liked them. My boyfriend recorded a tape of my favorite songs and taped it underneath a table at our local library. He handed me a short poem/clue one day that led me to book that had another clue inside. This continued through about 6 books and then the last clue was “Under your favorite table; Near your favorite seat; There is something hidden; That is very discreet.” I quickly ran back upstairs to my favorite table and there was totally someone sitting there, but I didn’t care. I got down on the floor and saw the tape stuck under there and grabbed it. When I stood up, Adam was standing behind me. He had been following me around and I didn’t even realize it! To this day, it’s the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.

Q36: What is something about yourself that most people would be surprised by?
I am incredibly hard on myself.

CR@W: the Bannermen The Overlords by IcePack & groovysmurf
IcePack
Some of you might not know that my gaming addiction goes well beyond CC. For years now, I had been trying to envision a game where one could play on a meta map, but perhaps utilize CC maps and games as how to determine the battle outcomes. Honestly I went through several legal pads over the years trying to craft something that I thought would work. The rough idea of CR@W came about mid 2015, when I started to put pen to paper on what would end up being the guide to the final product. Being an avid Civilization player, I used it as a general guide for the map and movements. When I thought of using CR@W as the main event for the 10 year celebrations, it really gave me a reason to buckle down and get the details and play testing going. At the time, I was watching Game of Thrones (again) and so I loosely based some of the concepts (including the map, reversed) on the show.

We had 14 sign up, honestly it was probably a little more than I anticipated for something so complicated and such a different concept then what Conquer Club Clan Area had been used to (simple brackets and leagues mostly). I had hoped one or two more might sign up, as I thought 16 total would be the perfect balance to the map placements (something I wish I could have redone a little as time went on) but overall, I was extremely pleased with the set up, layout, and participation.

Overseeing CR@W was something I found incredibly interesting, when we started even though I wasn't playing, I found myself checking to see if anyone had asked new questions, sent in their turns, or diplomacy probably far to often. When people weren't submitting, I was looking at different clans positions and thinking what would I do. I would find that this near obsession would continue throughout the entire game, which was probably a good thing as it honestly took exorbitantly more time to run then I or anyone else predicted it would. It peaked right around 6-8 hours a turn, and boy was I glad when groovysmurf volunteered to help! We ended up making a good team, she was very quick to pick it up and we both I think really enjoyed being the evil overlords (maybe even a little to much). It was clear that there was a segment of Clans that really, really enjoyed this and were privately messaging me about the possibilities for a 2nd version. However the game had been so time consuming, while I saved the suggestions, there just wasn't much of a chance I would be able to design anything substantially different at that pace.

In the game itself, I thought most clans did reasonably well in the beginning. There were a few surprises, GON and FSC had initially found each other pretty early and set up a friendly alliance. GON, feeling FSC was to close for comfort then surprised attacked FSC right as they were becoming bannermen to OSA! That one decision really dominated the rest of the game for both of those clans, who were pretty equal in strength and fought for the majority of the game. GON had started early on the mass production of cities strategy, and I think had they kept the peace and moved north to explore instead of west to fight, may have ended very differently for them as they were using the strategy (or at least appeared to be using it) that ended up pushing TOFU and OSA to the top of the ranks.

Right around the same time, FOED and FALL found themselves in very close quarters and spent considerable resources fighting early on until they formed a secret alliance and started working together. In the end, this decision would favor FOED a little more and was a pretty shrewd move on their part. I was pretty impressed, but thought this relationship was probably one of the closest over the duration of the game.

Another surprise was ID, as TOP approached their Castle, ID decided to jump in the game. They declared a friendship, and ID went on to be super aggressive, vanquishing at least two of their neighbors (FAD and VDLL) while building an alliance eventually with FOED and FALL. Their capturing of the "Blessed" title so quickly was a surprise, in test games that hadn't happened for some time after it was possible and they got it only a turn or two after it became available.

To the north, both RET and LHDD seemed more interested in exploration then combat (although LHDD did send a few Lords after ID). This didn't score them very high in the first phase, but allowed them to slowly build without much loss and put them in a very strong position to finish Phase 2 ahead of the others. If I had to bet on which clan was going to win when Phase 2 "Last House Standing" I would have picked LHDD.

To the south, OSA took on MD while assisting FSC vs GON. They also managed to help their inactive bannermen House vs TOFU. TOFU in the meantime had encountered HH early on, and while HH skipped over them in the beginning and I thought things might be friendly, they pulled one of the more impressive maneuvers in the game and hit TOFU's main castle! I don't remember whether or not they knew it was TOFU at the time, but I remember thinking it was one of the more aggressive moves with a lot of potential upside if they could get a foothold. Unfortunately for HH, TOFU managed to secure a 2nd Castle which prevented HH from really keeping the lid on TOFU's Lord production.

The real game changer for Phase 1 happened right around the same time, for both TOFU and OSA. OSA had been leading the standings for the majority of Phase 1, and most had them pegged as the eventual winners. However, TOFU and OSA to their credit realized about the same time (OSA just slightly afterwards, which might have been the difference in winning Phase 1 vs losing) that mass producing cities or watch towers in a protected area could vastly increase their score in a short period of time. In all honesty, this strategy didn't come up in the limited play testing version 1 received. Our play tests had been very "battle centric" trying to gain a tactical and strategic advantage over the rest, and really emphasized diplomacy. TOFU really utilized all their lords except a few to the west to build this massive metropolis, which put their eastern region and castles at risk. They didn't have the Lords necessary to defend, so they put themselves in a must win situation in order to try overtaking OSA for the lead (and win). OSA on the other hand, had some lords still tied up exploring / battling, while using part of their army to build watch towers. They more so then TOFU, weren't quite at risk in their strategy and had the luxury of being ahead in the standings already.

By now, we all know the outcome - TOFU surged in the standings and managed to overtake OSA with their vast metropolis. This strategy however, put them at considerable risk and weren't nearly as prepared for Phase 2 at the start as some of their counter parts. As groovysmurf took over after Phase 2, and it got closer to the end I was surprised at how well they managed to finish in the end. I wish LHDD would have had a stronger Phase 1, as I think they likely would have won Phase 2 if they managed just a little more offensive power through the game.

In the end - the first edition went over pretty well. I know "the long winter" made it hard for some to get back into it afterwards, not like that first exciting era. I wish we had been slightly more prepared at the start, or knew a little better what we were getting into. However, I do view the event as a success as in the end we had a TON of positive feedback from everyone who participated and the majority were all looking forward to v2. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next edition, CR@W: Homeworld.
It seemed odd that our mini war wins were calculated as clan war wins, but those are removed and that's fine.

The other thing that's also wrong are our CL9 results.

We currently have 2 wins vs GON with 3 confirmed ties, others are still open.

The plan was always to handle mini wars that way, not all are completed yet so it’ll get adjusted one last time.

Regarding CL9 I’ll notify Keefie, I see 1 win and 3 ties officially. Idk what he’s basing it on but I’ll have him check on it thanks.

There are bugs regarding finished games (not just for osa and not cause of players not being listed as clan members) so our both gon wars are completed.

Tnx!

You are right and wrong.

The win against GON was still showing up as 4-3 so I didn't include it. However on closer inspection the games were all complete and a player was missing from the database. Check later, the table will be amended.

As for the ties, you have 5 decided ties so far.

Both matches against PACK, both matches against FALL and you home match against FOED.

I don't see PACK games on my clan tab, so yeah forgot about that

Game 17776294 no nikola.milicki in our roster but game still counted as win

there are just some bugs, but it doesn't matter in the end, just wanted to clear those things now
