Help with Inkscape

I have Inkscape, it was recommended, free... you know the rest.

Anyway, I have two maps (Norlan , and SS Trinity) that are posted in the Foundry. Both are made with Inkscape. The Trinity map is a rough first draft.

What I need help with is graphic design. Inkscape isn't the greatest, it is very limited but through that it's still up there. This tells me someone out there has it figured out and can help me with texture on my maps.

I would also like to know if you can select images and use them instead of say a black line.

Any other help or how to's would be a big help in making these maps look and feel much better.
