Assembly election: Sinn Féin toasts vote surge

The Democratic Unionist Party has been narrowly returned as the largest party but Sinn Féin was the biggest winner in the NI Assembly election.

The party has come within a seat of drawing level with the DUP, which came into the election with 10 more seats.

Only 1,168 first preference votes separated the two parties and, for the first time, Unionists will not have an overall majority at Stormont.

My knowledge of Irish politics is non-existent. What exactly would happen if Sinn Féin gained majority? Would they proceed as the Scots and let the people vote on leaving the UK?
And what is the Catholic to Protestant ratio in NI anyway, would such a vote be an automatic win for the withdrawal side?

Sinn Fein support Irish reunification and have been pushing for a referendum for some time now. They would probably wait until they thought they'd win a referendum before holding one, but given that support for reunification has been rising for years and is strongest among young people, expect to one day see a headline about the Northern Irish deciding the time has come to ditch the bitch and reunify the island of Ireland.

The unfortunate thing about Northern Irish Republicanism is that the majority of Northern Irish voters don't want to be part of Ireland, and a lot of Irish people don't want the Northern Irish to join.

Exactly. Northern Ireland has found peace while England has lined itself up as the big bullseye in the middle of ISIS's line of sight. The sooner the Irish can cast off their English wart, the better.

You probably mean Baileys, and that's pretty obviously Irish- given that it's called Baileys Irish Cream. Whatever made you think that Strongbow was Irish in the first place though?

The question is more complicated than that- a lot of people in Ireland want a Union, but if you ask them if they want it in the future, or if they want it now, then you get a split.

And a majority of NI people don't want to separate from the UK anyway.

Plus there's a third option in play- stay part of the UK, but with a devolved parliament.

I confess that I wish to defer to your insightful statement that NI having a devolved parliament will help prevent calls for reunification just as Scotland's devolved parliament has prevented calls for Scottish independence.
